Any road bikers here?

Man... has this thread brought back some memories...

I grew up in the 70s, & my dad opened a bike shop after the big gas crunch. 10 speed bikes (with Simplex derailleurs) were just hitting the mass market. Cannondale sold only accessories at the time (handlebar bags, panniers, shorts, etc.). My dad decided to compete against Schwinn... as I recall, we started out with CCM as our "main" line. Viscount was our "premium" line, and Zeus was our custom line.

From the time I was in 4th grade til high school, my life revolved around cycling. both parents were president of the local bike club (Hancock Handlebars) at one time or another. We rode almost EVERY weekend... rain or shine, day or night, winter or summer... the midnight wine & cheese rides, the frigid New Years Day rides (that finished with hot apple cider), the summertime ribs & beer rides, the ice cream social rides, the time trials, yada yada yada. I'd ride a century or double century every weekend & not think a thing about it. I have a box FULL of patches & certificates from all the tours I rode as a kid. I guess that all changed when I got my driver's license... and then moved to Florida.

I got back into cycling in the early 90s. While working in Charlotte, several co-workers were avid "roadies", so I bought a new road bike & got back in the saddle. Would do about 30 miles after work a few times a week, with longer rides on the weekend. Then got into mountain biking... so... was a roadie during the week to keep in shape for mountain biking on the weekend. Lots of great single track around Charlotte. I used to LOVE riding the trails at Tsali in the summertime. I also rode Slickrock in Moab... scared the crap out of me, but wow, whatta ride.

Now I have a hard time finding time to get back on the bike. Father Time has done his little Mexican Hat Dance all over my body, leaving all the aches & pains that come with aging. Am blessed with plenty of great riding close-by (either road or mountain), here in SoCal, but currently lack the motivation. I took up running because it was easier on my back (and safer at night). My neighbor's been trying to get me out riding on his spare hybrid... may give it a shot & start a new chapter...

thanks for the memories...

Slick61, you need to get yourself one of these shirts ;) :

PC.

I'm a little late to the party but I have a new addition to the stable which inspired me. Here they are:

First up is my Trek Y22. I'm ashamed to say that she has seen very little use this season. I may even have to sell this bike off at the start of next season. We'll see how attached I become again once I give the bike its through winter cleaning.

Next in line is my started bike. It is an awfully rough ride but many good times.

And finally, the newest addition. One of my LBS is about to close and they were selling everything of at cost. Now I just need some decent weather...

Next is my first bike a C'dale 3.0. One of the harshest rides I ever care to experience.

And here is the new addition. One of my LBS is closing so they were letting everything go at cost. I can wait to get some decent weather for some saddle time.

EDIT: Image size fixed. Thanks Scott.

Looks similar to my Cannondale R400. The aluminum frames definitely have some harshness to them but I love how responsive they are.

BTW, you have to click on properties with the full sized picture, not the thumbnail.

Yes, the C'dale bike geometries tend to be well conserved from year to year and between the various models. Your R400 looks to be of similar vintage to my 3.0. The real innovation seems to me to be manifest by the tubing materials and profiles. Things like tapered walls, round vs oval vs hourglass tube profiles, etc.

Just saw this thread, great stuff!

I was riding at 10 years old and my father for the past 30. We rode the Dakar in 04 on 2 KTM 660's. Fantastic bike and unbelievable rally.

Okay guess it's my turn. I worked in a bike shop for oh about 5 years. I'm looking at picking up a Speicalized Roubaix. Not sure which one just yet. There are a couple of my babies:

I built the Soma from the ground up. Yeap even the wheelsets are a product some some hard work.
