Another C4 Corvette Brought Back From Near Death

This is my girlfriends 89 Corvette that she daily drives. She loves this car. We have been talking about getting it repained for a while but neither of us can afford to do so. So I decided to do the next best thing and spend a week detailing it.

The paint on this car is absolutely aweful! Its on its third or fourth black paint job. Was probably painted by Maaco, or Earl S. I can tell because there is orange peel, fish eyes, and sanding scratches in the paint itself everywhere. Not to mention the paint is peeling is some places that are thankfully hidden, and it is bubbling in others. You will notice the clear coat failure on the bumper, and also the overspray all over the doors. No close ups were done because as good of a job as I did removing swirls... there are just too many imperfections in the paint. But most of you will admit this is 100% turn around. This was also my first time using my NEW MAKITA ROTARY!!!! And yes if your not careful it does burn through clear coat quick.

The process was:

Wash with Dawn

Clay Bar Entire Car

Wet Sand Areas that required wet sanding (2000Grit)

Danase Swirl Abolisher III W/ Wool Pad at 1500RPM/ Rotary

4 Star Swirl Mark Remover W/Foam Polishing Pad 1500

Red Moose Machine Glaze W/Foam Finishing Pad 1000RPM

Hand Wax W/ Collinite 845

Meguiars Final Inspection Quick Detailer/Sealer

Fender Wells were Dressed in CD2

Armorall Extreme Tire Shine on tires and moldings

Stoner Invisible Glass on Windows

Magnaflow Exhaust - Rust Removed with P21s Wheel Cleaner and Scotch Brite... sealed with Zaino ZCS

Special Thanks to JOSHVETTE for answering 101 of my questions!!

Nice job Dan! Your description of failing paint reminds me of my dear ole SS. Great turnaround on the Vette. I bet your G/F is a happy gal now.

Great work! As you know jobs like these can seem to be never ending. Car looks much better and with proper washing the look should last for a long time.

That C3 looks evil! What is under the hood?

Thanks alot guys. This sure did seem like the never ending detail. And I am sure I could spend more time on it if I desired. But overall considering the condition of the paint, I am really pleased with the outcome. My Girlfriend was thrilled. I was properly compensated. Everyone is happy!

As for the C3... Thats my fathers 72 Vette. Its got so much done to it I don't know where to start. Ill give you the short list. 377ci stroker, 471HP@Engine, Carolina Performance Transmission 700R4 with Fully Manual Valvebody, 3.73 Posi, BFG Radial T/A's, Edge 3000 Stall Converter. The interior is all done up in autometer. 74 Front Bumper, 76 Rear Bumper if I remember correctly. Its a cool car.

Thanks for the Positive feedback guys!

Anyway, good to hear you're pleased with the outcome.

You did a great job.

Incredible turnaround; I would have thought that paint was beyond detailing. You just saved her $5 grand on a paint job! :bow

I wonder why I'd never thought of that! It has to be a lot more durable than the products people usually use in there. I will try it on my wife's ML.
