After the final PREP?

This is something I started thinking about today and really couldn't come up with an answer.

After you polish the paint to the best of your capabilities, you then do the the final prep of your choice relative to cleaners/sealants, waxes, whatever.

In my case sealants will be Klasse AIO/SG.

Carnuba topper of something.

With these sealants, why would you ever have to go back to a polishing compound/swirl remover/whatever (barring accidents). Wouldn't the synthetic sealants protect the finish from swirls/webs/whatever or do the sealants themselves actually start to decay or start showing signs of weather/road contamination?

How much protection can realistically be expected from a Carnuba wax topper? Wouldn't it pick up a great deal of the abuse before the elements/weather could attack the sealants?

I hope you get my drift, if not, don't hesitate to ask for a clarification. I'm just trying to figure the whole thing out.

Waxes and sealant dont stop swirl marks, they dont protect in that way.

The only way to stop swirls and scratches is YOU washing yoru car correctly and be catious as to what touches your paint.

Yeah, the protection agains mechanical abrasion is truly minimal. One careless pass with your wash media and you'll mar the paint right through the LSP.

Carnauba toppers might protect better than sealants agains certain things (opinions vary) but any LSP is strictly a sacrificial layer between the environment and the paint and that layer isn't all that much.

But yeah, wash properly and you can go a *long* time between polishings. I haven't repolished the whole S8 (I've fixed a few Random Isolated Deep Scratches- "RIDS") for nearly 3 years and it's been ages since I polished the A8 or the MPV too. Just wash carefully, clean the paint with something like Sonus Ultra-fine clay, and reapply the LSP, that's basically all I do once a vehicle is properly prepped.
