93 Corrado test subject (7pix)

I decided I'd take this lovely car that's been sitting out front for a while (needs some transmission and wheel bearing work) and use it as a test car.

Befores:

It's been repainted. I clayed this fender and it smoothed out the feeling of the paint considerably (you could hear the wash mitt go over the paint), but the clay didn't show anything at all.

During:

First hit with 1500 paper. Obviously some areas need a little more attention...

After hitting it with 2000 paper. Some areas were too deep. I also need some 3000 to take out the 2000 marks, but as a test, this will have to do.

I then proceeded to hit the panel with the PC@6 with 2x Sonus SFX1 on a Wolfgang yellow cutting pad (the orange wasn't "cutting it" hah!). This actually didn't leave much in the way of marring... Then 2x with SFX2 on a Sonus green. I was sort of rushed by this point, so slapped some RMG on by hand (worked in well) and topped with Souveran.

Definitely need to work more after the 2000 to completely smooth it out, but you almost can't see it in person. Overall, I was a little worried I was being too aggressive and I have no way to test the before/after thickness on this repainted panel, but heck, I couldn't have made it worse :D

The Afters:

I don't plan on doing this to my cars or clients cars without a lot more experience and training and the proper measurement tools, but I'd LOVE to smooth out the crappy OP on my new WRX :(

So that's that. Enjoy.

Total time: about 4 hours.

Whoa, did that ever make a huge difference. That must have taken a couple years off the paint though. Good job none the less.

Wow that took off a lot of OP. I don't understand one thing though. Is the higher wetsand number for aggressive or less agressive? For example is 2000 grit more or less agressive than 1500 grit?

yeah, i'm sure it did... i got it a little too thin on the edge of the wheel well, but this car is basically a junker and more rewarding of a test subject than a light gold 91 accord (my other test subject) :)

Orange peel is bad, mmkay?

Now if I had the tools to figure out how much I took off and the knowledge and experience to know what is too much. Eh, it's just a test. Skilled pros with the right equipment do this all the time. Maybe I could be one of them some day :D

Thanks for looking :)

And I'm not advocating that anyone do this themselves on anything aside from a junker or scrap panel from the body shop. That'd be bad :D

the higher the number, the finer the grit.

most woodworking sandpaper, for example, is around 60-400 (some finer, yes). We're STARTING at 1500 here. 2000 takes out the 1500 marks, 3000 takes out the 2000 marks, the 3000 should polish out via PC.

Nice! Consider trying a rotary with a wool pad, you can go straight from 1500 grit to PC work in about 5 minutes. Amazing how much OP the 1500 knocks down, huh? A friend of mine sands all his cars with 1200, no CC failure yet but he keeps em in a garage and away from the elements. They sure do look nice though.

Outstanding job !!! That is some of the worst orange peel I ever saw !!! I hate correcting the work of amateur or just plain lazy bodyshop personnel.

awesome job,

but no one asked why the paint has sooo much OP, who the hell painted it ?? :soscared:

how long did you spend "wetsanding" with each grit ??

thanks guys.

gav: i think an untrained monkey was let loose with a spray gun. the repaint is at least 4-5 years old. if it were my car I wouldn't have accepted that, but it's not and it wasn't. This quality paint job extends around the whole car, though the OP is a little less intense on the other side.

I don't know how much time I spent with each grit... maybe 40min? I was trying to take it easy, be smooth and even and not induce extra-deep scratches. I wasn't smooth, even and induced some extra-deep scratches, but I'm just learning :)

thanks again.

Holy Sunkist Peel(Orange) :scared: Nice work there! :xyxthumbs

Man get a rotary and you work will cut down in 1/2.

Anyways nice transformation.

Ditto.

Great work!

Nice!! I really love Corrado's.. I'm buying a VR6 model soon. Just looking around for the best price.

I was either going to get a 90's BMW 535i, a 90's Audi A4, or a VW Corrado... and I finally decided the Corrado was the car for me after test driving all of them :D

It has almost been a year since I have last visited this site.. good to be back.

wow, that look sooo much better. i really like deep green metallics, very nice. Did you do the sanding by hand or by machine? and are you going to finish off the rest of the car now?

It's actually a heavy flaked metallic black. I'll have to get some direct sun pics to show the flake off. Want to buy this one? It's got the VR6, but definitely needs some love. I think my brother would be willing to part with it for a couple grand :)

I did the sanding by hand. I couldn't imagine using a machine to do this, you really do have to finesse it and be very careful around edges where the paint is thinner and more prone to catching more of the paper - just as you have to be careful with a rotary around edges.

thanks to everyone for the encouraging words. Perhaps I'll tackle the rest of it if I get a rotary. It's too much effort via PC. Would anyone have a suggestion for going from the 1500 to the PC? In other words, what would be a good combo for pad/polish via rotary to get it into PC-able shape?

I was thinking a wool pad and IP or Optimum. I've got a full bottle of IP I have yet to try out...

If anyone has suggestions for rotary pads, that's the only piece I think I'm missing to make the jump to rotary (i.e. can use my PC foam pads for the lighter polishing and swirl removal of everyday detailing, right?).

Thanks again!

Nah, I am looking for a mint Corrado as my first car. I want no rust and the original paint in good condition.

There are lots of Corrado's in my area (dozens listed every week)..

I am thinking of getting a nice Red,black or Blue Corrado w/ leather interior.

There are quite a few w/ less than 100,000km's here for around $12-15,000 CDN.
