5 star shine fails to impress...

Here's my review, it's a bit different from all the others. Maybe its because I live in a sunny area and have my car outside all day while everyone else lives in a wet area with a garage...

I've had this product for 2 months and so far, I'm not really impressed :(. Right after I applied it, I tested out their "throw a towel on it and watch it slip off" and it did not slip off, but oh well, people make crazy claims like that for marketing just like their product lasting "5 years." My car is a black 02 accord that's never been garaged on a hot Los Angeles weather. For the first month and half I was really impressed with the product. Just rinse it with water and dry it and my car still looked waxed. I wash it at least once every other week with just water and sponge as they instructed and let me tell you, the tree sap, bird doo, or bugs does not come out as easily as some stated at the nico forums and their customer reviews on their website. I needed to hose the contaminant for a whole minute so the water can break it down before it can be wiped off, just like how u let dishes with food stuck on it sit in the water for a while so its easier to wash off. THE CONTAMINANTS DOES NOT "FALL" or "SLIP" OFF AS EASILY AS SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN OTHER FORUMS and THEIR WEBSITE STATED. Other people stated that they hose the DIRT right off, but dirt and contaminants are totally different. I am typing this right after I washed my car because I've noticed that the color of my car has become a lot duller (waxed my car with Zymol carnuba every month before I used this so I can tell whether my car is dulling or not), the paint felt like the car hasn't been waxed for a while (I waxed the car again with some leftover 5 star and the feel after the wax is like night and day). What also worried me was that I started to see oxidation (tiny round dull spots) on my paint (shouldn't happen with a waxed car). The water still beads a little, but only when I spray it VERY lightly (in other words, everything beads when you spray it lightly)

Its too bad their 5 year product only has a 30 DAY WARRANTY because I would have returned it and gotten my money back in a heartbeat.

My proof of purchase in case there's doubters.

Invoice No.: 5190 Order No.: 9708320 Date: 05/08/2004

I know its past the 30 day satisfaction guarantee but I would be much delighted if I can get some reimbusments for spending $50 on a wax that lasted me only 2 months.

Of course, this isn't a enthusiast detailer but what it sounds like is that 5 star shine is a mediocre sealant, packaged in a little bottle, marketted like it's the best thing since artifically made syrup, and has a jacked up price.

:( It makes me want to send the poor guy some Vanilla Moose and #16 just because I know it would be a good combo, and more durable then that. :)

Its all in the prep, not the product. i bet 5star would actually last if washed weekly and occasionally clayed before applying layers.

Hang on a minute, Water is the best!!

That's all I have used on my car for four years. I don't even need to hand wash it. The pressure washer rinse is enough. the paint is so slick that you don't need too.

All shampoo's will weaken the sealant or polish and wax on a car. It's just that some are more course than others.

The most sealant/wax safe car wash.

Purified water or Rainwater is what I use though. Not tap rubbish

LOL, good one, SVR! And you know, you don't have to wash you car, either! I've found that the best protection is a nice, thick coating of road grime. The dirt act as a sacraficial barrier, preventing contaminants from attacking the surface. Water will wash off the loose dirt, allowing the thick, oily grime to adhere directly to the paint and protect.

Maybe they ment on a vertial surface ? :D

Apparently the car was clayed prior to application.

And I use tonic water on my car. I find the carbon dioxide bubbles lift and seperate dirt off of the surface!

My car doesn't get dirty enough to warrant shampoo. An unprotected car needs shampoo I agree but once sealed, only needs water due to the slickness of the paint. road grime cannot stick to it.

I wonder why so many of us are worried about micromarring the paint while washing even if the car is hardly dirty and insist on using the slickest car wash they can find? Isn't the purpose of a wash also to provide lubrication during washing and can't a finish still get marred even if it's only very lightly dirty?

Do you use shampoo when you shower?

That's what I thought.... :nixweiss

What about oily road grime such as exhaust and stuff like that?

Here's are a couple of current ongoing 5 Star Shine reviews.

Corey Bit Spank What if somebody gets a scratch and they want to buff it out? Then wouldn't that area be left unprotected?

Sure you can buff it out like you would with any wax or polymer protection. You'll have plenty of product left over to cover up a small area such as where a scratch would be. 5 Star isn't like Zaino in that you would need to be concerned if you had a bunch of layers of Zaino.

bwahaha. "No, hunny, you cannot take the car, I'm applying the 76th layer of zaino to that area and I have 7 more to go!"

I resent that.
Sorry. :o

I know the name is unfortunate, but I don't know of any other name for this proceedure.... I think the first reference I saw to this was when someone did a sketch making fun of Michael Moore in an interview.

BTW, my father still does this sometimes.... :nixweiss

And; say what you will about 5-Star Shine, the guy paid up and supports the forum. That's in no way meant to imply that the product should get anything more than an honest review, but in my book it earns my respect. He's willing to 1) put his money where his mouth is, and 2) play with the big boys and take whatever comes his way.

So, if you don't like 5-Star, that's cool. But the man's going about it the right way, rather than spamming and planting he's paid up and ready to answer questions.
