wow good turn around I can't believe some of those "professional" detail places that just swirl the paint even worse then it was to begin with. That black looked very deep in the final pictures. Also how did you like the 3M product, has it easy to buff off?

-Brandon

I love Unltrafina. It's one of the easiest polishes I've ever worked with. If you haven't tried it yet, it's a must have.

I dont comment here often, but great job. You did an awesome job. I have yet to use the 1Z glanz wax, any other sealant its comparable to?

Thanks for coming out for this one! I can honestly say 1Z is a unique product all together. Easy to apply and remove and is very compatible with other LSPs.

Great job. It's a shame what those "professionals" can do, but it keeps you in business. :goodjob

You're right about that.

Good job David. Seeing you buff in person, I have no doubt the finish was spectacular.

Thanks alot for all your help Saturday. It was nice to have you there.

great correction! sounded like the car wash "technician" really knew what he was talking about ...not.

not for sure. :funnypost

Terrific turn around, excellent write up and photos.

By the way, why do you use laquer thinner for wetsanding? I've used carwash soap before just never heard of using laquer thinner.

I felt that the extra friction the sandpaper created allowed the solvent to penetrate the surface better to remove even more possible silicone from the prior repair.

Wow great work, looks better than new. But I also have a question you used M105 twice, and then SIP... weren't you afraid of removing to much clearcoat? I'm no pro, so I'm asking. But from what I hear, I'd be afraid to use 105 more than once, let alone follow up with SIP.

Thanks. I never second guessed the depth of the correction one bit. I did more leveling of the surface than anything. 105 was a big tie saver on this project.

wow. beautiful work. :bow

Let me get this straight......you used 4000 grit paper and lacquer thinner to "insure that there would not be anything on the surface that would interfere with the buffing process to follow"? After you said that the surface was contaminant free?

If it was contaminant free already, why do it? And even if it wasn't, why use 4000 grit paper and lacquer thinner?

Contaminants and silicone are 2 different factors that I was trying to eliminate for this project. Each one required different steps for removal. Having a perfectly clean working surface is key for proper paint correction IMHO.

pampos said:
Great correction on that great car..just a question.that cover will not scratch the paint??

Thanks. Nope, not 1 bit as long as the surface & the cover is totally clean. It's been on many, many vehicles ovber the years without 1 problem.

LangMan37 said:
Very Nice!!

Question-Just wondering why you chose to use cotton towels to dry? Just curious.

Thanks LangMan. I use cotton towels on all my details because they are super absorbant. I've never experienced a problem yet.

fishbonezken said:
absolutely perfect work, pictures and documentation.

The reflections are stunning!!! perfect job David.

Can I ask if you tape the edges/gaps between panels when compounding with M105 and PFW?

Thanks fishbonezken. On this project I only taped the necessary edges on certain areas. Because every inch of each panel was marred, I needed to fully make contact with the entire surface (with etreme caution). If I were to tape the edges on this car, correcting the surface under the tape by hand would be impossible and would stick out drastically.

rlguy28 said:
is there a reason why you used terry cotton towels to dry? Do you like those better compared to a microfiber waffle weave?

I use them because they work and no matter how much people believe they damage the finish, it's not a factor in this application. I only used them after the initial wash. MF were used after that.

Now that is paint correction !!!! Excellent turn around.I hope the owner to it to the so called detail shop to see what it looks like when done correctly. Great job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. The owner is staying as far away as he can from that place after seeing what they did to his car. :har:

David,

I am in complete awe of the condition the previous "detail shop" delivered the vehicle to the customer . In the befores, it almost looks like the car had been wetsanded! Did they burn the paint in any areas? It looks like there is a burn mark on the drivers door about halfway down in one of the before pictures.

I am amazed how well you were able to bring the paint back to life!! It looks better than new now that you've worked you magic on it. You really earned your money on that one for sure!

The combination of products you used are spot-on. M105 does a great job on removing the deeper defects on the hard Corvette clear and leaves a pretty decent finish. SIP works great to really refine the paint and Ultrafina is the icing on the cake! I did a similar process to a black C6 I did a little while ago and worked great.

Very nice pictures and great job on the write-up!! Keep up the great work! :xyxthumbs

Thanks Rick! I used your detail on that Vette you did as my baseline for this one! Believe it or not, there wasn't a single burn on this finish. Thank God. :woot:

I'll jump on this one being that I had the chance to actually see this 4000grit in eprson and use it. Its not like wetsanding paper in the traditional sense. Its like a mesh fabric sheet. The marring by it is soo minimal than a PC and 106ff can correct it. Sometimes when you clay, even with an aggressive claybar, you're left with contamination that will not budge. This mesh fabric gets the best of it, without installing excessive marring you would get from an aggressive claybar.

Also, if you notice in the before pictures, there are no back and forth wetsanding marks. I've seen the marring left from this mesh sheet under both halogens and sunlight and am quite excited to implement this into more details, even if its not directly on paint.

Thanks again Luis. I couldn't have said it better myself. :2thumbs:

Great job David. I know all too well how much work that must have been to remove all that stubborn wool marring. You certainly earned your money on that one. Z06 wheels on a C6.

Thanks Patrick. I sure did.

WOW! Incredible work David. I'm glad he found you so his car can look like that for the rest of it's life.

Thank you. I'm glad too.

Spectacular work! I hope that the owner of that car got compensated by the hacks that messed up his car.

After I brought all the defects to his attention, he decided it would be in everyone's best interest to not return to that car wash. :bat

Great work David, that Vette was in pretty bad shape, looks like you really restored it.

Thanks alot Josh. I appreciate it.

Another car brought back from the brink of being "average" and transformed into "exceptional". Outstanding prep work and final results. The owner had to be thrilled.

Thanks so much. The owner couldn't believe how good it looked.

Excellent work! Insane! Its mind boggling that another place would trash that car in the way that they did.

I liked how you stacked up the towels and rested the hood. Neat idea, I've never seen it.

It was nice to see Meguiar's #00 get in on an action shot. Its a fabulous soap that doesn't get mentioned here. I use it diluted for clay lube. You should also check out Meguiar's #62 for maintenance washes. It is another great performer from the body shop line.

Great job.

Thanks Spilchy! You gotta think outside of the box with detailing I guess. :secret

Thanks for the tip on #62. I'll definately plan on trying it out.

great job, was wondering where do you get 4000 grit paper? i can only find 2000 max anywhere local, besides online.

I buy it by the role from Micro-Surface Finishing Products:

Awesome write-up and correction David!

Thanks for all your support.

Excellent recovery David! After doing more then a few black hammered vettes at the start of the year, I have not polished one is a few months. Your thread makes me miss them. ;)

Excellent work David! That Vette sure was hammered. I sure bet he appreciates the work you put in. I hope this new client is a keeper for you!

Fantastic detail David!

Thanks for the advice on 1Z GlansWax, I don't have Zymol Carbon but I do have Souveran. The next time I do a detail on my car, which doesn't need any correction - I'm thinking about trying your IZ with wax topper.

it looks like 105 left some holograms (sp). I have some but yet to use it. Looks like a good choice for that vette and WOW what a great finish you put on it!

Thanks. This car wouldn't have look 1/2 as good without 105. It really leveled and sharpened up the look of it.

David your work always speaks for itself. You are definitely in the top group of detailers. I ahve yet to have had the joy of working on a Vette but if I do I am sure that I will be coming back to ref. this post. So thanks in advance.

I Have found that my three step polish almost always starts out with 105 followed up with IP then UF. I don't have to tackle too many super hard clears so I stick with IP. But I believe this to be the best 1,2,3 combo. I do believe you just solidified this with the looks of that Vette. It just seems like the Menz IP or SIP is perfect to follow 105 with. And I can not get enough of UF.

Anyways, fantastic job and thanks for taking the time to share.
