Hello all,
Just need some guidance. I have a detail coming up. I just need some information if anyone can help. The color is Tropic Green. It is a mystic paint job. I'm pretty certain it is through BASF. Has anyone done a car like this. If so is there any special considerations. He bought the car use and someone did a really bad touch up jub in the places. You can see the scatches right through the touch up. They may seem better or even worse looking after the detail. Otherwise the paint is in good shape. Also the hood and trunk lid are a composite material do I need to consider heat while polishing or different polishes? I will be using Menzerna's standard clear coat polishes with a PC or Flex random orbital. I'm not 100% sure if rims are billet. They are shot. Very chalky and dull. That leads me to believe they are just polished billet. I do not know if they have a clearcoat on them. I could not find the specs for the rims. He has another set and is leaving the bad one's on until the tires wear out. I may suggest he not bother having me fix them because of the expense. They will need to come off of the car and will probaby take some serious time to correct. Thank uou in advance for any assistance.

Hi Jastg, I will try to help. I have detailed a 2004 Terminator (sp?) Mustang that had the Mystic Green paint job.

Do you have any pictures of the touch up? The best thing you can do is be honest with your client and explain your concerns. Never promise more then you know you can deliver, or better yet, never promise anything.

Carbon and composite body panels do not dissipate heat as quickly as metal panels as you noted, but there is not real special considerations. Normal polishing should not induce enough heat into the panel to cause any damage, but for saftey sake I would not polish in the sun and inspect the paint tempature by touch after each pass.

The Menzerna polishes should work great on the paint, IIRC this is what I used as well (IP/FPII).

Test a little polish or metal polish on a stop of the rim. If it turns black (make sure the rims are clean first) then there is no clear coat. Even a quick polish with a metal polish can make enough of a difference that it might be best to meet in the middle regarding the wheels, so atleast they look better until he changes them.

Thanks again guys. I pointed out the bad paint touch ups. Either they would look less noticable with the paint cleaned up real good or worse. I told him the best thing would bring it too a body shop have them fix it. I know the paint is expensive. As far as the rims go. I told him it would be best to leave them alone being that he has a brand new set sitting at home. I talked to him for a 1/2 hour about what could be done and could not be done. In the end it's his decision based on what work he is willing to pay for.

Post pics when you can I would love to see the before / after shots. I have a 03 torch red Terminator....BUT too bad I'm having the worst luck trying to post pics on here.

file size is too large on my computer and even when I upload it onto photobucket.

should have it up soon though

I only took a few pictures with my phone for reference so they are only of the whole car. I did not take close ups of the bad touch up paint because I know I won't be able to fix it with just polish. It will need to get wet sanded and touched up again. I know the paint is expensive and I'm not sure he will be willing to spring for it.
