Bret and I detailed this car last friday. Its always a pleasure to detail with Bret. This is a exterior only detail.

Thanks to Jim (stickman81) for meeting up with the owner on a recent trip to Dothan, AL.

The owner purchased this car a few years ago. The car has had paint work on a few panels. He will be getting a repaint in a few years. The factory paint is single stage, but we found the right rear quarter panel to be a clear coated repaint. Who ever did that work should be shot. You will see in the pics below.

The car is equiped with some "speedline by porsche" wheels. They are in very nice condition. Not many sets of those in the US from what the owner said.

Jim took the following pics of the car about 3 weeks prior to the detail:

Does not look too bad:

Some nice work by a hack:

The dreaded RR quarter panel:

:nervous2: :nervous2: :nervous2:

The owner arrived on friday and here are a few more before pics after the wheels, wells and tires where cleaned:

Here are what the defects looked like on the rest of the car:

You can tell from the slight pink color that a fair amount of oxidation was present:

Process:

Z7 wash

clay and wash

Wheels cleaned with PS21 wheel cleaner and a MF.

Tires and wells cleaned with AM777 and a brush.

Tried a few different combos on the paint, for most of the car we settled on:

Presta 1500/green edge wool pad/ Metabo 1500

Bret polished the hard to reach areas with:

4" orange spot polishing pad, ZPC and Hitachi rotary.

Thank god that Bret brought his pad washer, the green wool pad was covered in red from a half to a whole panel. I think I cleaned the green wool pad a dozen times with the system 2000 pad cleaner. What a lifesaver...

Bret followed me with ZPC/white LC pad/PC.

Sorry this is the only after polishing pic that came out:

Then we came to the RR quarter panel.

Tried:

Presta 1500/green edge wool pad/ Metabo 1500- no effect

Presta UCC/black wool/metabo 1600-no effect. :hairpull

We where wondering if the CC was starting to fail and how deep these "swirls" are. We talked it over with the owner and decided to give some wet sanding a go. Bret wetsanded the entire panel with some 2500 paper. I then polished with:

Presta UCC/black wool/metabo 1600

Presta 1500/green edge wool pad/ Metabo 1500

This easily cleaned up all of the wetsanding, but the sad news was that the "swirls" where still present. :wall

Bret and I have detailing approx 10 cars together and for the first time we where unable to remove defects. Maybe we could of used some 2000 paper and wetsanded again, but we thought that the quality of the repaint was so bad, who knew how thick the clear was.

So Bret finished the area with the:

ZPC/yellow megs pad/PC

We then did a Z6 wipedown.

Applied 3x of ZFX'd Z5pro.

An application of Z8.

I applied ZAIO to the wheels.

Bret applied Z-16 to the tires.

That looks great! Too bad about the rear quarter panel, you gave it your best though!

I think it looks pretty sick! Nice turnaround, Im now excited about using my wool pads this weekend!

Hey where did you order your presta polishes from?

Thanks

Jim

Great work!

Did you get to drive it?

993's are the best looking Porsche's IMHO.

They also are the last true Porsche in terms of handling and powerplant. To explain: the new Porsche's are water cooled and handle great for the inexperienced driver. The old Porsche's <= 993 were true enthusiasts cars; subtle for the common man, a beast for those looking to push the limits. Lift throttle over steer. Now that's something you don't see every day. Maybe I'm biased; however, I like the notion of pushing the limits knowing that I'm the only one that's going to keep the car on the road. It sure beats a computer telling me how to keep from busting through the guardrail.

Or maybe I'm on crack,

Barrett

That's fantastic work *especially* on a re-paint.

Great Job guys!

I'm sure the owner was FLOORED by the results.

Nah, Barrett, you are not on crack. The Porsches you have described require that a very good driver be at the wheel to get the most out of the car. IMHO, it would be wise for a prospective owner to go to a reputable high-performance driving school first.

I digress. I loved the detail, and the fact that you "did what you could do" on the dreaded rear quarter panel. Sometimes, you gotta know when enough is enough.

Again, great work, and I salute a fellow Steeler fan!

Very wet looking finish! :)

I bet those swirls are under the clear if wetsanding had no impact. The reason the shop reshot that panel with clear is because they probably gave a warranty with the repaint and didn't want the owner to bring it back because what they repainted faded. Still, I agree it is wrong to do that to a car that is otherwise single stage.

Looks great Bryan! Red is a great color when it's cleaned up right. Have you started your new work schedule yet?

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

No we did not get to drive it. That would of been cool as it had a nice throaty sound even when just cruising down the street. So at WOT it must sound real nice. I am sure it would be alot of fun to drive on the track.

Yes it appears that the defects are under the clear.

Todd, when are you sending out samples?

The Presta 1500 worked great with the green wool on the SS paint. The pad does seem to be done after each panel and requires cleaning. Not sure I cared for the UCC with the black wool on the cleared over panel. It seemed to be very thick/gritty. I'll have to try that again when needed. I prefered the strada 1000 more as its a thinner polish.

Wade, Yes I have, so far so good. Most folks seem receptive to having details done during the week. I'll be keeping a black C5 at the house for a few weeks while a client is out of town, so I should have plenty of time to get it right. :) Have 4-6 pending details right now. But like Mr Luca always says, its not a detail till you have your hands on the car.

How did the RRQ turn out?

It looked like the makings of future clear coat failure.

SS paint is messy but the out come always looks great.

Great job Bryan and Brett! Those cars can be very finicky and sometimes tough to deal with.

Like Scott said, they shot the spot with clear cause of the fading and the swirls are under the clear. Very common thing bodyshops do with these older Porsches and I have seen it done to atleast 10 of them that I have done in the past. There is nothing you can do, but you guys made it look new again. I personally hate doing older Porsches cause I always see issues with the older ones. Atleast you had Bret there to help you and make it fun. You guys do great work together.

ps. Wait to see the 85 Vette that I got stuck doing. Oh ya it is black, bad repaint, peeling gelcoat, severe scuffs, OP bad, overspray, half clear coat/ss, sand in paint, bird poop in the clear (first time I have seen this), primer on trim, and whatever might appear while I am doing it. I am going in fully loaded to the max for this one. I will try to get some pics of the job.

:thx for all your kind words everyone.

Ryan, That sounds like one heck of a project. I have a potential client who wants me to come look at her 93 blue vette for a est. She thinks it needs a repaint, so I can wait to see how "nice" it is.
