$15.00 minimum wage - thoughts?

Why not have congress and all the other politicians, both state and fed lower their wages to bare minimum in order to pay for the increase in minimum wage

I agree education is the key. The question is how do we help those that are not quite young anymore that had jobs that went offshore as companies chase profits. An educated workforce will help America the country - something corporate America is not focused on that wants low cost labor no matter where it is.

I do not agree that all minimum/lower wage workers and those on welfare are losers and no loads. I know well to do no loads and losers. They just have more money to waste. Some did actually earn it but many had a lot of help.

A couple of points here Al.

Let me change your word meaning here a little. "chase profits" = reduce costs. Fact of the matter is people may shout "buy American" from the roof tops, but are they really going to 30-40% more? Would you pay 30-40% more for your car if it were sourced from all American stuff if another company had a similar item for that much less? DOUBTFUL. SO it's really not just corporate America as you say. It's AMERICA. Why are coupons so popular? Because they save people money. Simple concept, xxxxxxxized under the guise of corporate greed.

As far as you 2nd paragraph, I never said that.
What I am saying is that an increase in minimum wage is both counter productive and a disincentive to people trying to better themselves and make a better life. It allows people to become complacent, and makes government responsible for their lives and lively hood.

IMHO this is dangerous type thinking. Just like we shouldn't artificially inflate the wage of unskilled workers jobs - we shouldn't artificially deflate the wages of state and federal jobs.

I think the BEST thing we could do is actually DROP the minimum wage, back to say... $2.35 an hour. But, then again, I'm also for making welfare recipients work menial jobs for the state to receive their benefits and punishing those that have children without the resources to care of them. Unemployment....I'd prolly cut it back to 6 weeks.

I definitely agree with that. It kills me every time I hear social security is running out of money. Why is it never welfare or unemployment running out of money

Here is one observation - not scientific - why we may be running out of SSN - something all of us old guys have faithfully paid into for 50-60 years..

A few years ago, after my wife left our marriage, I went to the local SSN office in Bellevue, WA., to figure out some things..

Go there early, had never been there, was not sure where it was...

Only 3 cars in the parking lot - I had the cleanest, shiniest one.. :)

Had to wait awhile; the place started filling up quickly..

I like to people watch for many reasons, and I noticed this -

The majority of the people coming in after me - none spoke English, many wore clothes that covered their heads, many wore really nice clothes, some wore worn out clothes..

As the place started filling up and I heard nothing but foreign languages and no English, I started thinking to myself - " Dan, why are all these people obviously from other countries in here seeking or getting SSN ?????

How could they have worked here long enough to be getting it ??? They are all way younger than I am...

I started looking at each one of them more deeply - trying to make eye contact with them..

None - yes, none of them would make it with me...

Why you ask? I asked myself that same question, over and over...

I will admit, I got a little ticked off that I saw so many people here that are not from this country ( in my opinion only), here getting or wanting to get something that I believe they could not have been putting money into...

When I finally had my appointment and left, the visual outside was even more stunning that what I had just experienced inside...

In every parking place almost - Cadilliac, Escalade, Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and about an equal amount of SUV's of the same marques...

Now I was really ticked... :)

Went home and finished Detailing the heck out of that car in my shop...

Because older retired people vote in high numbers and percentages in comparison to other age groups. Also some off them are a bit naive as we see from the scams that are aimed at the elderly crowd they can be scammed and scared into doing something the may not have done when they still had their fastball.

Drop the min wage and let the market take over ??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

The government knows better

Here's a new one to me. If you are in the prison system long enough when you are released you are considered a minority and are eligible for SSI, a bridge card and other welfare benefits.

SS running out of $? Start cutting back on benefits paid from the system which were never intended when established.

Your first paragraph is incorrect as it pertains to Social Security. You "may" be eligible for SSI benefits if you meet the current criteria that everybody else has to meet. For example, if you are unable to continue in your line of work prior to incarceration you "may" be eligible. You are not considered a minority. Here's the website for review: Benefits after Incarceration - Social Security.

I agree completely with your second paragraph.

I also agree with those who state the $15.00 minimum wage is ludicrous.

BLS: Unemployed More Likely to Go Shopping on Average Day Than Look for Job | CNS News

On the average day, an unemployed American is more likely to be shopping—for things other than groceries and gas---than to be looking for a new job, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Only 18.9 percent of Americans who were unemployed (in surveys conducted from 2009 through 2013) spent time in job search and interviewing activities on an average day, according to BLS. Yet 40.8 percent of the unemployed did some kind of shopping on the average day--either in a store, by telephone, or on the Internet. 22.5 percent of the unemployed, according to BLS, were shopping for items other than groceries, food and gas

Surprised no comments on this............

I remember waiting in line for hours with my dad for our families ration of gas for the car. The line stretched for miles because we only had one gas station in the center of town.
I bet if gas needed to be rationed today you would not see too many higher end cars sitting in driveways or on the side of the road because they ran out of gas.
This is not the country I grew up in and I'm worried to see the one that is left for my daughter.
Our government is broken it's putting aside the needs of the many for the needs of the few. They think some of us are too stupid to see when we are be placated by lower gas prices in the spring and the holiday season, healthcare for everyone, food stamps, war on drugs, "illegal" immigrants. There is a reason our government has not put a wall up yet. Seriously the Chinese did it really quite well without modern equipment.
Don't worry the min wage is never going to see $15 in my life time. The working class are the bricks and mortar that the wealthy build upon. The issue is what and for whom they are building.

You need to remember that minimum wages are set by the individual states, municipalities, as well as the federal government. Here's what's happening in Seattle:

"The Seattle city council voted to push up the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. If the wage hike is fully implemented, it will guarantee Seattle’s workers the nation’s highest minimum wage. The increase in the minimum wage will be phased in over a number of years. Big employers that do not provide their employees a health plan are the first that will face the $15 per hour minimum, a requirement that will be fully phased in around 2017. Large employers who offer health benefits will have to pay the $15 minimum starting in 2018. Small businesses with employees who receive tip income will have to pay the $15 per hour minimum a couple of years later, but the countable wage will include employees’ tips. By 2021 all employers in the city must offer a minimum wage of $15 an hour, regardless of the employer’s size."

Wait until you see what big government has coming next: The Maximum Wage....

All workers will only be entitled to a maximum wage based on their usefulness and productivity to the state. Job classifications, political affiliations, and how much soda you drink will determine what maximum wage you are eligible for comrade. Excess wages paid over the maximum will be funneled into expanding state sponsored "monitoring" programs.

People who smoke will be given a chance to quit via a federally sponsored smoking cessation plan. One attempt will be granted, after that you will have your wages cut and be required to sign up for Obama's Smokers' Insurance. Premiums are mandatory and will be deducted directly from your paycheck. If you smoke and your child is found to have asthma or allergies - you will be sent "away" for re-education.

Multiple failed attempts to quite smoking, drinking soda, & associating with the "wrong" types of people will result in a permanent relocation and mandatory branding of your arm with symbol that you are not "state friendly" - and a further deduction in wages. Food rations of relocated individuals will be limited to a bowl of rice daily for one month for cigarette found in your possession or 8oz soda infraction.

This is from the desk of the Leader.

This is an Order.

Like I said this is not the country I grew up in. Maybe another revolution is in order. It is our right under the constitution.

IMHO - A bit drastic.

What results do you want? Again, IMHO it sounds a little as you are annoyed at the capitalistic society

Some people think that is coming and that is why the government wants to take our guns and make ammunition so difficult to get. I don't believe in conspiracies or that "the government" has some secret plan to do this....

But, the increase of government regulations and the loss of freedoms can not be denied. Income redistribution keeps the poor fat & placid, while the middle class are working harder and harder just to keep afloat and live nicely.

People aren't really starving here - too bad... Starvation is a good motivator for the public to get off their butts and do something to force change.

If the revolution comes, my friend has like a zillion guns buried in his yard...He says he will protect & feed me as long as I detail the cars in the motor pool of the New Régime.

Viva La Revolución !

I can't imagine this country in 100 years.
