08' Jet Black 335i BMW - The Anti-Christ of paint

I always love reading your posts, and this was one of the best!

Thank you! Got a 750 LI (jet black) we are set to do in a week...good God those things are big. Working on their 2013 black ZL1 and just be warned, that paint is SOFT...having a hell of a time trying to prep it to coat...hopefully we can get it finished up tomorrow though without marring it all to hell :-\

I never really understood the legendary horror stories that go along with how soft this paint is/hard to finish down.

Having worked on them all, IMO black Porsche clear, or even Nissan GTR is much much softer.

At any rate, great job done, the car looks excellent!

THIS particular one wasn't a huge nightmare...had to be careful not to mar but it wasn't insane.....insane like this black 2013 ZL1 we just did. H-O-L-Y S***...THAT car was a huge nightmare...just..yeah...took forever...had to do areas over cause if just the edge of your towel were to "drag" behind while removing polish, it would mar. On top of that 3 panels were repainted and they were kind enough to leave nice clusters of sanding marks in the paint. It was just a huge huge headache...then to top it off we had to COAT it...but couldn't wash it cause it was too damn soft to dry! What a long 2 days that was...on a car with under 3k miles :-\

Awesome job! I can't imagine how hot that paint must get in the Arizona heat.

On the topic of difficult black paint, have you ever buffed a 2008 jet black Volvo (maybe just S80s specifically?)? When I used to work at a dealership that specialized in Volvos I remember those cars being tough to finish out properly. The paint was relatively hard to cut, but the compound and polishing pad on a rotory would leave an average finish, it was only when I went to finish with a DA that I had issues. The only thing that seemed to work decently well was a soft edge 2k pad on the PC with OP or FPII, breaking down the polish first and then finishing it out by keeping the pad rotating constantly with just the right amount of pressure. Just wondering how the paint on jet black '08 BMWs compares to the Volvo, I did a 20+ hour correction on an 06 330 sport in jet black a few years ago and it didn't stick in my mind as being overly difficult. Is it certain years of the jet black that are excessively difficult?

We were doing this red Civic last week and while the car was under our tent while washing it...after washing even the panels in the shade were literally HOT to the touch, not warm...hot lol.

Never have done an S80 so i honestly can't compare :-\. If memory service correctly i believe 07' and older are suppose to be the worst for Jet Black's but don't hold me to that.

Softest paint we've dealt with to date is one repainted Lingenfelter Camaro..which was almost IMPOSSIBLE to finish down...and then most recently a 2013 ZL1 Camaro...same thing...it took 2-3x's as long just removing the polish as it normally would cause we had to be SO careful...and one slip up...and you mar the paint and have to re-polish.

That added with the fact that we had to coat it made it extra impossible lol. A usual 1 day job turned into 2 very long and stressful days...and we have another one coming in on Friday...thats a full repaint on all sides and the nose piece....covered with buffer trails and sanding marks and orange peel :-\...man...its gonna be a loooong weekend.

I guess I'll stick to living in the Northeast then, lol. Who knows about that Camaro, maybe the repaint will be more manageable than the factory clear.

Well tomorrow we will find out :). We have a black 2012 (not 2013) to do next week as well, OEM paint...i'll be interested to see how that paint reacts as well....i pray its much more manageable because its a LONG drive to get there and i dont wanna have to make 2 trips!

Great Job! Day and Night difference; especially when you added the strip and the W. You could really see a huge difference.
