I do not think a salute is going to fix the country's problem. It is actually a symptom of the broader problem of non-stop partisanship in almost everything. Every side is looking for anything (photo ops, videos, secret recordings) to throw mud to just stir the pot to build discontent. Votes in Congress are usually done for political points and not to actual solve an issue.

Even though I think that Obama is totally incompetent President (that would be like hiring the book keeper at the local car wash to detail your car). That wasn't the purpose of this thread.

I have tremendous respect for our military. These are men and women that protect the freedoms we enjoy (such as being able to complain about the government). These people have chosen to give a certain amount of their lives or give their lives for our security.

So to see the "Commander in Chief" treat a sign of respect so lax annoyed the heck out of me. No, I don't remember seeing W salute with Barney in his hand and yes I agree with what Foghorn said.

SO no, will a salute fix our countries' problem. NO

Will respect and courtesy help fix SOME of our struggles and problems YES

Exactly. I don't see what the non-stop blasting of our Presidents accomplishes. Criticize Bush on the Iraq war, criticize Obama on Obamacare, fine. But W gets hammered for screwing up "fool me once," Obama gets hammered for wearing a tan suit, this is helpful?

Read it again. The entire sentence, by the use of commas, refers to Eisenhower as the former member of the military who received the highest rank possible and not me. In fact the entire paragraph refers to Eisenhower. I was an E-5 in the Coast Guard. Since you were an LTC what is your opinion regarding the return salute from a civilian President to a current member of the armed services? Is it required and is it a disservice to all military members, past and present, if no return salute is given?

Not all who have served, regardless of branch or rank, embraced the experience and I appreciate those views. Two tours in sunny Southeast Asia was not my first choice of a fun time as a twenty year old. Now, as a seventy year old I do appreciate my education that your parents paid for.

The issue is respect. President Obama, by his holding that office is the Commander in Chief. As we all know that concept of a civilian being the final authority over the military started with George Washington back with that little tiff with George III.

Respect. A simple concept. As the civilian COMMANDER IN CHIEF why would one NOT return a proper salute to those whose lives he holds in his hands?

I don't give a rat squat which president started this. The latte salute made me want to puke simply because it was a total lack of respect. The moron in chief is not my favorite president. If "Dubya" , HW, or Reagan did this I would want to slap any of them upside the head.

As an aside...
Many veterans might not be aware that since 2009 veterans and active duty folks, may, while in civilian clothes salute during the raising and lowering of the flag or while the National Anthem is being played. One may still place his right hand over the heart or if wearing a hat place the hat over the left shoulder so that the hand is over the heart.

Btw, yes the American Flag that is flown at my house is illuminated at night and is recovered during inclement weather and is tri folded.
