First Time Machine Polishing

Hello, I am thinking about attempting to do my first machine polishing. I have seen lots of videos and done a ton of reading.

I am looking to get some feedback and suggestions as to what machine polisher to buy.

Thanks....

+1 on the GG6. A PC is also a good choice, but with the extra power and lifetime warrantee, the GG6 is the way to go imo.

Another vote for the GG DA--with a 5" backing plate and 5.5" pads it can't be beat by any of the standard DAs and it has a lifetime warranty not to mention Griots excellent customer service.

What are your expectations? What are you working on? Is it going to be just for you or are you planning on working on some friend's/family member's vehicles?

I generally have my car detailed twice a year by a pro. Dan from DnD Auto Detailing in VA. Great guy and great service. I'm just looking to kill a little time, mess around some in between details and see if I can kick up the shine a notch without causing any damage.

So my expectations are a tad more shine. i mean can we ever get enough.
I'm working on a Benz 550 Green with tons of flake and I'm working on my car, not any family or friends.

Thanks for asking.

If your paint is in great shape, I have great luck with the following:
1. Merzerna SF 4500 using a griots 6" -speed 4 -with White cool wave foam pad - slow hand speed
2. Blackfire wet diamond with blue pad and griots - speed 2
4. Blackfire Crystal seal - hand applied....

Amazing gloss...

If the paint is in great shape, you can polish by hand and be done before you learn the art of machine polishing.

But, if you're like me and just have to own a machine that sits in the case 50 weeks a year, :)...then the PC or GG 6 are good choices.

I'm going to have to copy that before Fall.

Appreciate the responses. Paint is in great shape. What type of polish would you suggest using by hand?

Thanks.

Because you are currently working on a M-Benz which normally have harder clear coat I am not sure how much you will be able to accomplish "by hand". I would highly suggest looking at getting a D/A polisher like the Griot's Garage 6". It will make the job faster and easier on you.

Because you are working by hand I would suggest trying Meg's M205. It is as stronger polish that finishes down very well. I prefer this over Menz 4500 because the Menz is a diminishing abrasives polish and needs to be fully "broken-down" to work properly. With the Meg's M205 you can stop as soon as you get the desired results.

As a beginner i'd go with the PC7424xp.

Good Luck.

I would personally go with a Porter Cable. The Griot's does have a bit power (which you may not need) but the PC is the most reliable machine we offer.

Team it up with BLACKFIRE SRC Finishing Polish and a 5.5 inch white pad and it sounds like you will be good to go!

I like using M205 by hand from time to time to remove those little flaws that annoy me. Great stuff, even by hand.

Greetings All: Once again appreciate the feedback! What I think I'm leaning towards is doing half the trunk with either the Griot's or PC and the other half by hand.

What I know best is what I don't know so I certainly don't want to do anything to damage the finish on this car. I may need to do this work under the careful eye of someone with experience.

Make sure the person with experience is truly experience. Lots of guys in this industry with 20 years of experience which equates to 3 months of experience x 80.
