Anyone here do detailing with a hernia?

Weird coincidence...I had a minor umbilical hernia almost 3 weeks ago and it's just about fully healed now. I was doing some heavy squats and had my belt too tight...I was in a lot of pain for a few days. Lots of rest + 600mg ibuprofen 3x a day and it was much better after a week with only some residual pain. Been doing whatever I can and I'm finally able to work out hard again now.

I know this probably doesn't help too much, but just try to rest up and don't do anything that will potentially re-injure it. I was scared to death with the amount of pain I was in for the first few days and thought I would need surgery for sure, but I got lucky I guess. Rest up and take it as an opportunity to relax some more :)
Thanks so much Matt for posting!

This is what I want to hear !Our circumstances are very similar but very different too.

Unlike you I never had the extreem pain. I had this very uncomfortable abdominal pressure and swelling for about a month before I went to the doctor . I also had this strange feeling like I was pregnant and my guts were pushing out through my stomach, ab muscles.

Like you I was working out pretty enthusiasticlly and had some very hard jobs at work the week it started . Then I got a cold and was coughing a lot whitch I am sure didnt help.

My friend who has an alignment shop and does heavy lifting all day long has an umbilical hernia too right above his navel . Its the size of a dime and the doctor told himits too small to operate . He has had it for years and it doesnt bother him anymore.

My other friend has one in his groin . He also has had it for years and told me he just pushes it back in when it pops out.

I dont take ibuprofen but take about 5 grams of vit C whitch BTW helps with inflammation and very important for muscle healing . You should be taking it!

Also just a warning ,not to scare you but if you have sudden pain and vomiting it can be a possible "incarceration" where the intestines get trapped/pinched off and begin to die and that it is emergency that reguires immediate surgery. Its rare though so dont sweat it.

Where exactly is yours and did you go to the doctor? If so what did he tell you? Also do you do detailing work?

:thanks

No argument here. I know many infants have navel hernias that correct themselves. I was merely stating that the people I know weren't able to put it behind them with rest and a modified regimen. The question is how long do you give the rest scenario before you decide it isn't working. Sounds like DC has three weeks of this therapy already.

Surgery as a last resort is a good way to approach most health problems. One of the people I knew did have a navel hernia, he too needed surgery. The rest of the people I've known had hernia's in their lower stomach and lower yet. I also understand that the mesh they use to correct this type of tear has been problematic. I wouldn't want it in me unless there were no other way. Hey wait, I said that about my knees and shoulder too. I lost. :)
Thanks GH.

I want to hear all experiences . Positive or negative.

I know the mesh is preffered ,especailly for people like me who do strenuous work. The other doesnt seem to do a good job and many get 2nd hernias.

The mesh is also not tolerated by some people, infecton rate is high and also 30 percent of people end up with chronic nerve pain .

For these reasons alone I dont want to even think about surgery, not to mention other surgerys Ive had that caused me ill health for many years afterwards and gave me weak abdominal muscles to start with.

Mine started as a sharp pain after doing squats (when I had my belt on). Without the belt, I had some discomfort but nothing crazy unless I put any kind of pressure on my belly button area. Then I ate a ton of food after my workout as I usually do, and the pressure from that made it 10x worse! Coughing hard can definitely cause something like this. I had it checked out by a nurse friend of mine. My other friend is a paramedic and said the same thing....his buddy has an umbilical hernia that pops out all the time and he pushes it back in. :rofl

I do detail occasionally but not as much as I used to. I work at PBMG full time so I usually only have time on weekends to clean my truck or other cars. The last week I've gotten back into my normal workout routine and am able to do sprints again so I think detailing would be just fine. :)

I take vitamin C once in awhile, but you should really do some research on vitamin D if you want to really get off topic. :inspector::bigups

Also FYI I know of a lot of powerlifters who had the same issue and had surgery done. You can request for them to use a stronger mesh and/or double the mesh/stitching so that it won't come undone again.

I've had hernia surgery, but it was not the same type of hernia so my experience probably would not be helpful. My generic recommendation is find a physician you trust and follow their direction to the letter.

I also noticed a lot of discomfort after eating and just like you I would come home ravenous after a day at work and pig out :D

Not anymore ,I just nibble on nuts through out the day and eat some soup for dinner and a banana before bed.

If anything positive has come of this is I have lost 10 pounds effortlessly!! I am thrilled and would be happy to lose 10 more:excited:

I am considering fasting as its been recommended also to give the intestines and body a rest...after Thanksgiving maybe!:D

Good luck Matt and dont work out too hard. Are you the same dude who does the"trucks gone wild"?

Thanks Mr Clean .:)

How did your surgery turn out? Mesh or the other?

I'm a big believer in this, for the reasons you've mentioned and a few others. My church gives us a chance to do this each month. We simply call it Fast Sunday. We do it the first Sunday of each month. We fast for 24 hours, both food and drink and donate the equivalent of the meals we would have eaten to those who are in need. I know we're not here to discuss religion but can attest to the benefits that come from fasting from a physical perspective because I do it. The discipline associated with fasting is also a huge plus psychologically.

You just encouraged me to do this! Thanks!

Ive fasted a few times and always feel so amazing afterwards. Ive always drank plenty of juices or herb teas though and have never a water fast.

I am getting hungry just thinking about it :D

You're awesome!

I also won't go into a huge religious rant but let me expand on what GearHead said. The idea behind fasting is that no law given is temporal. The dedication of fasting demonstrates our faith and strengthens us spiritually. If you are a religious person try fasting with a prayer in your heart and you will see changes in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Get better DC!!

I have fasted many times and can attest to amazing emotional, physical and spiritual changes.

Water, IMO, is an essential part of fasting. Water (pure water) cleanses toxins from our digestive system and rejuvenates our body.Fasting won't repair torn muscles, broken bones or heart problems. However it's been known to cure hardened hearts.

First I am no doctor but I had a hernia and as rule they don't usually get better without alot of rest and most of the time surgery. If you are in the latter catagory, I would get it taken care of as soon as possilbe becasue all the rest is only delaying the enevable. Get to a good doctor, get an opinion, get a 2nd opinion and take some action so you can get back to detailing!

Look up intermittent fasting (even more off topic...) go to leangains.com and you can read all kinds of research backing it up. Very interesting stuff. I've been using the 16/8 (16 hour daily fast + 8 hour feeding window) for about a year now and love it. It's so much more convenient than eating 6-7 meals a day and the lean mass gain / fat loss I've experienced definitely backs it up.

Oh and no, I'm not Matt Steele. Just boring old Matt :D

Yes I probably should drink more water .

Unfortunetely I read that water fasting often causes nausea and vomiting so Im thinking of doing just soup broth along with water also.

Thanks for your post Mr Gloss! Your still coming ,right? :bigups :D

Yes that seems like sound advice .

Its just very hard to know when exactly to give up hope of healing without surgery.

Water, fasting , cleansing-- sounds more like the prep for a colonoscopy :D
