Clay Bar Recommendation

Hey guys, I've decided to finally try claying my car (when the winter weather is over anyway :D ). I've tried reading some current threads on clay, but I'm still more or less confused on what clay would be best for my situation. My current daily driver is some serious need of paint correction so whenever I clay it, I'll probably be trying my hand at polishing also. My thought was that I could probably use a somewhat aggressive clay as marring wouldn't be an issue since I'd be polishing afterwards anyway. Is that a good assumption? If so, what clay would you recommend? Also, could you recommend a milder clay for more general use? I'm open to any comments/suggestions. Thanks for all the help guys.

P.S. As a side question, is it ok to use a wash soap/water combo for clay lube? I thought I saw somewhere that it might degrade the clay, but I wasn't sure if that was true.

Just pick up some blue Clay Magic at AZ or any auto parts store that carries it in your area. If you need something more aggressive, pick up the Clay Magic red. I think it depends on the clay and the soap. Some use it with no problems at all, and others have problems with the clay disintegrating. If you get the Clay Magic, it comes with it's own lube.

Thanks, I was thinking about getting the Clay Magic, but I wasn't sure about its quality.

It is a great clay and it's available locally. They actually hold the patent for the clay. Just a tip: tear the clay into smaller pieces. That way, if you drop it, you can throw that piece away without ruining the whole bar. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the tip. I wish I could have done some detailing today with the 55 degree temperatures, but I had other things to do.:(

Yes, its garbage! There's no substitute for actual "claying!" If you would like to try it for yourself I will mail you a sample, just pm me your info.

Has anyone tried the turtle was Liquid Clay?

Someone let me try some, it seems like a waste of money.
I did a small spot with the liquid clay and then I did a spot right next to it with some Claymagic clay and asked the person to feel the difference.

When he felt both he then wanted to get rid of the TW and find some of the blue "playdough" I was using :D

Wal-Mart sells a Mother's clay bar kit. I have used it, the Clay Magic, and the Meguiar's kit. My opinion changes depending on how long it has been since I used one or the other, but I think I prefer the Mother's kit.

Yes great advice, I'm the world leader in dropping clay bars on the ground........:wall

Try them also the one's from CG and didn't like them Troy. I had stock in the clay market, so when i drop one, more power to me..........:rofl

Your in Canada - go buy some Ricardo.

I don't think you can beat Clay Magic, both the blue and the red where something more aggressive is needed. As was said before they are the originators. I have used it since it came out and will never buff a car that has not been clayed first. IMO you're working against yourself if you do. I clay my details during the prep process using the car wash soap as a lube. Depending on how dirty the vehicle was I may rinse it a bit to get some of the dirty soap start heading to the ground and then just put some soapy water on the area with the wash mit. I have never had a problem with the clay breaking down eaither although I always use a decent car wash soap, not dish soap. Once the car is washed, clayed and rinsed you are ready to do whatever paint corrrection is necessary
