Did some yard detailing yesterday

LikeaRock

...Dreaming on an E92....
My dad's never been big on planting stuff... He likes lawn, but he never really goes out of his way to make things look, well, "great"... His yard has always had potential, and I've been wanting to spruce it up for a while, so I finally did some work yesterday.

Here's a few pics... And none of this was here before, with the exception of the bark/lawn...

I wish I would've gotten more plants, but I guess this is good for now. I definitely want to get a few more in at some point, but not so much that it looks too busy/crowded. It will look fine once everything grows in some though. The sweet broom should really come in by the end of summer, I put some small 1 gal. broom in at my house and in less than a year they're already 3 times the size of the 5 gal. plants I put in yesterday :passout:

today (If weather permits), a small, ornamental tree from the backyard will be trandplanted into the large bark area, so I'll already be moving what I planted yesterday LOL. I didn't want to go too crazy with lots of color either, I wanted something subtle that would go with the colors of the house... Which me and my brother painted last August. I know, we're good :dnaughty

Best part is, it was free (for us anyway)! My grandfather owns the house (he owns several homes around town), and my uncle is the property mgr. for him as he's over the days of dealing with tenants. So all I had to do was call my uncle and say "My dad's yard looks too bare, lets go to Home Depot"

I'll post pics later or whenever I get the tree and stuff moved around. I want to do some more cleaning up, and get s'more plantings in on the other side of the yard. The gardener came and mowed the lawn yesterday so I gave it a good feeding afterwards. It used to look much better when I lived at home and took care of it myself :notme:

Let me know what you guys think so far!

:bigups Very nice will you come and do mine:hmmm: please

:D

My lawn has yet to return to it's summer color. My Fescue grass is green now, but the Bermuda and St. Augustine are still dormant. What type of grass do you have there? It looks like some form of "clump" grass.

Glad you didn't go for that "instant" landscape look by overplanting. Look forward to seeing the landscape as it matures.

I'm sure your Dad is happy and proud of his Son's efforts.

Fly me out there on your dollar, provide me with a place to sleep, and I'll do it for free just to get away  :D

The grass right there is sort of a mix... It was originally Dwarf fescue grass I believe, but within 2 months of laying it out, we seriously had like over 30 gopher holes within 3 days! :passout: We bought some of that weird looking patch stuff, threw TONS of grass seed under that stuff, and it came in pretty darn good really. Like I said it should look better, and in due time it will. And the "instant landscape" look was exactly what I was trying to avoid, I hate that. When people do that, it looks overgrown within a year it seems. I like plain and simple, and after seeing how well my yard grew in, it's worth the wait.

Here's a couple pics of the tree. I'm unsure what it is, and really hope it takes... Makes a big difference IMO

I'll keep posting as I make progress. If the weather is good this weekend I hope to get a lot done.

Very nice ... I won't even see my yard for days unless it rains, then I still won't see it because it will be underwater :wall

I could have guessed a form of Fescue. Mine is a tall Fescue.

I don't know what the tree is either. Bradford pears have a similar looking bloom, and a smooth textured bark, but I'm not sure.

How deep did you plant the rootball? You really want the top of the root ball to be slightly above grade.

If you can check to find out what the tree is you can be more certain of it's natural growth pattern, but I'm pretty sure that you will want to trim some of those lower branches so that later on you will be able to walk underneath its "awning". I say make sure because trees like the Southern Magnolia (which this almost certainly isn't) have limbs that go to the ground.

Also, you will want to remove that staking pretty soon. Not really all that helpful and can be harmful if left too long.

Again, good work it sounds like you have a well thought out plan. :bigups

That was the one thing I couldn't remember, was whether or not to plant the root ball a bit above or level with the surface.... I did it level, as like I said I couldn't really remember. I'm off to HD tomorrow to get some tree stuff. Either that, or I can cruise to the other side of town to this "tree nursery" and see what they say. I'll snip those lower branches and bring 'em with me so they can hopefully ID it.

I planted a couple shade trees next to my driveway at my house and had NO idea what I was doing, I called a friend who I thought knew a lot about trees, and he knew as much as me, ha. In the long run they've lasted almost 2 years now. they're growing slower than I'd hoped, but i'm just happy they're alive! :D

Looks good Dolan! When did you get back from tahoe? Hopefully it doesn't rain this weekend and you can do some more work. The rain has been killin me, keep having to postpone jobs!! You seen Rich's wifes jeep?

I moved back a few months ago, but have been sort of dormit (sp) since I couldn't drive for a few months :notme: Was working for a friend at Four Wheel Perfection and won't really get into why I left, but I'm glad I did. Now I've just been pushing to get some detailing work going or anything rally, it's just slow right now. I've been doing loads of PR work this week and hopefully will be getting some calls as long as the good weather sticks around.

I do miss Tahoe, but there was NO work up there. I might give it a shot again in a year or two though. It's SICK up there :dnaughty
