KUDOS TO AhsGrad1973

black bart

New member
AFTER I posted how the server in Denver was not udatting to the new number AhsGrad1973 sent me a pm and told me how to cure the problem and it WORKED HERES TO YOU DAVE :thanks:thanks:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bow:bigups:bigups:bigups:bigups:bigups:yourrock:hail:D

I had Black Bart to add a couple of lines to his hosts file. If you are running on Windows, open up notepad, navigate to the c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc folder, open up the hosts file, add in the following two lines:

216.246.2.2 detailcity.org
216.246.2.2 www.detailcity.org

Save the file. Close all open web browsers, reopen one, then go to detailcity.org This is a simple dns resolution. But if Troy moves the site to a different hosting company or the host company changes the IP address, then you must make the same change to your hosts file.

+1 now let everyone else in on the secret:D
The way that he told me would leave a lot of people scratching their head. Computer geeks are bad about that they assume that you know how to do all these things so I have put down a step by step process.

Open these folders in this sequence.
My computer
C Drive
Windows
System 32
Drivers
ECT
Hosts
Select Notepad click OK
Scroll down to the bottom and type just like this be sure you have a space where it needs to be.
216.246.2.2 detailcity.org www.detailcity.org
Exit and save

The problem is what I posted a few days ago the servers on the Internet are not updating
This will force the server to go the new IP Address
If troy changes servers you will need to change this to the new IP address.
In a month all the gateway server should be updated and at that point you could go in and take this line out.:bigups
This fix works I can go and come back any time I want.:D

Same problem following? these instructions.
I think ECT is incorect and should be ETC, but even then, I don't reach a "hosts" folder. I have a folder that is called IM hosts or something like that and I can get to notebook. The page that comes up has a lot of information on it and none of the lines have any similarity to the lines you suggest typing.

Now, whether DC is now working again or my clicking on the link in AHS's post made a difference, I am now on via my cable connection.

FWIW, Windows had a warning window pop up that told me the area I was accessing affected the operation of my computer and I got the impression it wasn't recommended.
As I have said repeatedly:
1. I have no idea what anyone is talking about.
2. I have no idea what I am doing.
3. I do not want to screw up my computer.
4. I appreciate all that has been done, but I am not going to do a bunch of things that may or may not work and seem to have some possible ramifications if not done properly.
5. If the problem is at the Denver server, then the Denver server should correct that problem. I don't see where it should be my responsibility to fix their screw up.

Look again it is their.
If anyone feels as Charles you have NO option but hope that some day the servers will update but this fix is a no brainier just type at the bottom what I posted and your problems are solved

You are right Charles it should be ETC
The IM host is on the upper left HOSTS is on the upper right.
Look again it is their.
I was going to multi-quote, but maybe I should cover one thing at a time.
There is imhosts SAM File 4 KB at the upper left.
There is networks File 1 KB at the upper right, not HOSTS.
There is protocol File 1KB at the lower left.
There is services File 7KB at the lower right.
That's it. That's all there is. There is no HOSTS file.

When I tried to do this using Vista the message I got was:

Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

Make sure that the path and file name are correct

And for the Vista users?

This is what the file says when I open the "host" file in NotePad:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

It should be the same.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

That's what the path should look like.
double click on the file that says host. It may ask you what program to open it with. Choose the text editor

And for the Vista users?
All I know about VISTA is I have a good friend that works on computers and she said that if you have a CD that has VISTA on it and you run it backward it will play satanic messages.

What is worse is if you run it forward it will Install VISTA.:D

Did that, I've quoted what the host file looks like once opened. It's a sample file and not a list.

Yeah, I hear those comments with some frequency but I've been running if for 13 months and it's been the most trouble free Windows OS I've used and I've used them all. Linux had zero problems but fewer applications when I used it. No complaints with several Mac OS's that I've used. In fact this is the first real problem I've had since running this system and I don't believe it to be system related.

Remember the old tire commercial that said: "Sooner or later you'll own Generals?" I'm thinking that whether people like it or not sooner or later they'll run Vista. I'm no fanboy, I'm just running what came on the PC. I will give you one additional observation, I believe that people who run Vista and use Symantec's product have problems.

I have xp ver, 5.1 2600 build and the hosts folder is in mine.
Mine says:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

It's whatever Sony included in the package when I bought the computer.
Works for everything but DC and is working with it right now.
Hey, I enjoy DC, but not enough to buy a new computer. :D

Like I said, I will struggle through it until the problem is either fixed or I get tired of messing with it. :)

You have a newer version than I do.

Yeah, but I don't have a "hosts" file. :D
For whatever reason, it's working again this evening and wasn't until I started this computer update effort.
It just seems to come and go. :wall
I think you will have better luck getting on when the kids are not in school.
If the web is really busy your request will go to the default server and it has not updated but if it is overloaded with traffic you are redirected through another server.
I believe that is why you are on now.
In time this should fix it self the server is suppose to update automatically.

:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:lol2:

I have XP too :D
