KUDOS TO AhsGrad1973

I feel like I owe you guys something for all this aggravation. The whole reason for the server change was to fix this problem, not multiply and amplify it.:passout:

I just want to say thank you to the ones doing all the trouble shooting to help everyone with access issues. :yourrock :bigups :bow

Also thank you to everyone who is having issues and is choosing to stick around until they are fixed.:bigups

:dcrules

I'm sure all the members are more than happy that you have been diligent and willing to do what ever it takes to keep the forum at its best :bigups

And for the Vista users?

This is what the file says when I open hosts in NotePad:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
I would type in the IP address and the DC URL just like I did mine.
If it don't work all you need to do is remove those lines and save the new configuration.
Another option is call tech at your ISP and have then to help you with it.
This fix works and it can quickly be removed if need be.

Perhaps I'm not being very clear. I did this per the instructions previously posted (to the letter). All I get is a sample page that is as I copied it in the previous posts, it won't accept changes. No list of IP's, no nothing.

I did the trick since DC was inaccessible last night and tonight. It did work but for some reason Opera did not work the first time....

Well like I said I don't know about Vista so I would call tech at your ISP they can help. I would have thought that you could type into the HOST folder I can on mine.

But did you TRY to type in the folder
You're losing me here Bart. Following the instructions in first part of this thread I get to the last instruction and have a "host" file, not folder. I open this file this file with NotePad and get the result I have posted.

Forget what we are calling it. After you opened it did you try to type at the bottom of the page.

What I don't understand is when you opened this file did you type to make it look like this.

This is what the file said when opened with NotePad or WordPad. I added the 2 additional lines as instructed and tried to save the file. It would not let me do anything. I think the response I got was in post number 9. There was nothing else in this file (i.e. list) Yup, just tried again and got the same response as in post 9.

Well I don't know what to tell you other than call tech support.
I don't have a book for Vista and since I plan on using this computer for a good while when I buy a new one it will have something else so no point in learning Vista not likely that I will every own it.
Sorry but I :surrender

GearHead_1, it is the Vista UAC (User Access Control) that is preventing you to save to this file. There are a couple of ways around this. You can turn off UAC, which I do on all of my computers running Vista. Or you can use Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the c:\Windows\System32 folder, scroll down until you see notepad.exe. Click on your Right Mouse button, select the Run As Administrator. Then edit and save the hosts file as previously stated.

If you want directions on how to turn off UAC, send me a PM, and I will send you detailed instructions on turning it off.

This link to Google allowed me to find instructions I understood. :bigups
Following those instructions, I am now on via my cable connection. :yay
I was not able to do that 5 minutes ago.
If I can access the site consistently in the future, I think this was the fix. :)
I have no idea if it is fixed yet since my access has come and gone sporadically every day. :wall
This may be a time when it started working on its own rather than because of what I did.
Being the hopeless optimist that I am, I fully expect this to have fixed the problem. :bigups

My thanks to all! :bow
