Thoughts and Prayers for the victims and Families in Orlando

Modern sporting rifle. I assume the sport is just wanting to go to the range and do a lot of shooting. I am not saying this is wrong. It may be no different than have a very fast car and wanting to drive it fast.

Unless you can properly reload the gun in which your attempting to ban... you have absolutely no right to open your mouth. The people who do this are the same people who text and drive... oh yeah operating 4000 pounds of rolling mass at 60 mph distracted is fine but owning an 8 pound rifle that fires 6 rounds of 1 gram projectiles is horrible.

Pathetic...

I`m sorry I don`t mean to slide off topic but my blood just boiled when you mentioned texting and driving.

I`m a strong believer that someone caught texting and driving should face the same penalty as someone caught drinking and driving. It makes me so mad.

A couple months ago I`m traveling down the highway with my family as this dbag in a Mercedes comes by us in the left lane. My wife looked over and said "oh good....he`s driving with his knee while texting and his head is down." Not 30 seconds later as he is by us he hits the rumble strip. Thanks buddy.....thanks.

Just need to go on a bit of rant here because it seems fitting, and I witnessed part of the overall problem in person yesterday:

I was in a small "mom and pop" chinese restaurant and I overheard two gentlemen having a very heated conversation about Orlando. They were going on and on about "the left" and how they knew how to solve all our problems: block immigrants from all other countries and "get back to our roots here". These were the same guys who were wearing Nike polos, using iPhones, driving a Japanese brand car, and eating in a chinese restaurant. What kind of mental gymnastics do you have to pull to not see the hypocrisy of that?

I`m not going to pretend to know how to fix what`s wrong with us(and there definitely is something wrong) but that kind of divisiveness is a poor way to start the repairing. Need to just take a couple of steps back and reevaluate things from here going forward instead of continuing to drudge up old issues. Really take a hard look at how we can cooperate - how can we come together and work towards the real enemy instead of distracting ourselves bickering over political BS and using these tragedies as a soundboard?

It`s very simple, we don`t bar all Muslims from entering. What we do is control the flow to level we feel comfortable.

A simple layout

One bar all countries considered hotbeds of terrorism from direct travel to the US. Not saying citizens of these countries can`t come here but they cannot come direct. Lets put other countries to work for us by having places that are ok`d by US vet them first. Then let them travel here.

Two NO immigrant should be allowed to come here with out being properly vetted, I don`t care if it takes months. If they cannot be vetted properly they cannot come in, that simple. If they want it bad enough they will wait. Let them reap what they sow, because of terrorism we have insane delays with our transportation system (Flights/TSA/3 hr wait times), it`s time for them to feel it as well. Maybe once they realize the fools in their society are inconveniencing them to a point that they have to wait 6 months for a visa they may just start to impede/deter these idiots.

interesting post......can you tell me who "the real enemy" is?

Note that plenty of people have an actual, existential *need* for certain firearms.

Sure, lots of folks buy [certain firearms] just because they think they`re fun/cool/etc. But not everybody.

What`s the appropriate tool for dealing with wild Boar? I wouldn`t try to dictate that to somebody who knows more about Boar than I do.

Go up against the guys who robbed my family home (previously discussed here; they were literally equipped for battle, as per the crew in the movie Heat, with stuff stolen from a National Guard armory) with a pump shotgun or a handgun or a 10 round magazine? Utter suicide.

It may be no different than have a very fast car and wanting to drive it fast..

I`m *MUCH* more concerned about being injured by some [individual] who outdrives his abilities in his fast car than I am about *anybody* hurting me with a firearm. The stats for being injured in an auto wreck are staggering while the stats for being shot are infinitesimal by comparison.

It`s not a who, it`s a what. War, poverty, oppression and exploitation of hatred all breed extremism and violence from all walks of life. It`s been that way forever. The two political parties in this country treat the other side like they are the enemy. Guns aren`t responsible, one singular religion isn`t responsible, and one specific race isn`t to blame either. Like I said, I`m not pretending to know I have all the answers but the conversation starts with our country being united in our efforts instead of divided and bickering like we are now.

Whoa, I hadn`t heard your story before. That`s scary stuff and a prime example of why one size doesn`t fit all when it comes to firearms and home protection

Short Version: Fortunately nobody was home when they hit (they undoubtedly planned it that way, but still...). When they were finally apprehended my Dad had to move their Ballistic Vests (with Trauma Plates no less) out of his way when looking for [our stuff]. (Try penetrating one of those with just any ol` weapon/ammo!) Knowing Dad`s interest in firearms, the LEOs showed him the (full-)automatic weapons the guys had and were saying how lucky everyone was that they were taken by surprise and thus apprehended without a major firefight.

Upscale community with a miniscule Crime Rate, patrolled by Sheriff`s Deputy, good alarm system/doors/windows. About as close to a safe, zero-crime suburb as can be imagined. That`s probably part of why the perpetrators chose it. Criminals aren`t always clueless burnouts, some are highly proficient Professionals and like other Pros they make sure they have the best equipment (which they can *ALWAYS* get).

Sounds like they hit specific target

Wow! These are the kinds of things you don`t get to hear in mainstream media. Glad that worked out where nobody was hurt or worse.

Ronkh- Oh yeah, very specific target. Never did figure out who provided their Advance, but they simply must`ve had inside info.

House of Wax- Right. My wife and I are, uhm...extremely knowledgable on this topic (and well-trained) and are qualified to make our own decisions.

Heisenberg- We were quite glad that our involvement in that crime spree wasn`t part of the reportage lest anybody else get naughty ideas. That was quite a while ago now, but recently there have been at least two Home Invasions in our (again, *very* low crime-rate) current area, and in both cases the homeowners were home and, uhm... suffered horribly, with some dying. Those perpetrators weren`t as professional but rather substituted brutality for things like advance knowledge. Got caught pretty quickly too, but IMO there`ll be more of `em as long as there`s stuff worth stealing. The rationalizations some of our friends subscribe to (instead of preparation) make us  ..."Hope that works for you"...

Absolutely. I for one don`t hunt anything but I shoot quite a bit. I use to hunt most of the popular local game depending upon the season. I don`t have any issues with people hunting as long as they use the game. For me, I had what I call a streak of morality hit me. I don`t like to eat any of the game I once hunted, whether it was elk, deer, pheasant, duck, dove, turkey, doesn`t matter, I don`t like to eat any off it. Everyone has their own special receipe to prepare game. I tried a bunch of them and anything beyond Elk jerky just wasn`t for me. Given that mindset I decided the good Lord didn`t put these animals here for me to kill simply for sport. I have nothing to prove by taking game, I don`t want a trophy on my wall. I know that whatever I put the crosshairs on will disappear. So... I don`t hunt anything other than paper targets.

That said, an AR15 can be the perfect rifle for any type of hunting where a 5.56/.223 is an appropriate round. I know many who choose this as the gun of choice for hunting coyotes, pot guts or rabbits at 200 yards. For me, I like to build them from the ground up. I like to modify ones that I haven`t built. I like to reload the rounds I`ve fired, I like to punch holes in paper. I often go to the range with more than an a handful of calibers when I go. I almost never go to the range where I don`t take at least one AR. I seldom take one and shoot "a lot" of rounds. I might shoot 40 rounds and then move on to the next gun. When it comes to rifles an AR is a relatively inexpensive gun to shoot when compared to other rounds like a .308, 30.06, 7mm, .300 WinMag etc. They also shoot like a pussy cat, particularly if the gas system is properly tuned. That`s a real consideration for me since I had my shoulder replaced.

This isn`t subject that I believe I can sell to anyone. People either understand my mindset or they don`t. I won`t force my beliefs on people and they won`t change my mind either. I do take expecption when people say things like these particular guns are weapons that no reasonable person needs. I`m a reasonable person, need is another story. Seriously, I need food, clothes, shelter, water and my health, beyond that it kind of starts getting into my wants. I don`t need 3 cars, I don`t need 3 computers, I don`t need a 65" television, I have these toys becasue I want them. I don`t need a lot of the things I choose to own but I won`t tell you that you don`t need that particular car either. Well... I might tell Ron that the new Corvette would have looked nice as a Saleen. ;) We like what we like, doing so doesn`t make me a threat or dangerous.

adding on to that great post, there are a lot of competitions and events out there utilizing the AR, which adds to the "sport/competition " aspect of the rifle.
