Review: HD Protect

The Guz

Mike
As part of the 3D giveaway, I chose to review HD Protect. Here is the info from 3D.

Preserves, Protects, Prolongs

• Leather, Vinyl, Plastic, Rubber

• Low Sheen, Light Gloss HD PROTECT is a water-based surface protectant designed to preserve, protect and prolong the life of your vehicle’s interior. Safe for all interior surfaces including the finest leather, plastic, vinyl & rubber.

HD PROTECT adds a durable NANO polymer barrier to your interior that will protect against friction and resoiling degradation. Leather & vinyl will feel softer and more luxurious, without feeling slippery or greasy. Plastics and other trim pieces take on more color and richness without attracting dust or dirt.

HD PROTECT is pH balanced and will help strengthen the moisture content that your leather truly needs to last forever. VOC compliant & Bio-degradable

Directions on the bottle

SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE.

Thoroughly clean the surface using HD TOTAL interior cleaner. Apply HD PROTECT immediately after using a clean, soft HD Black or Red foam applicator.

3 alterations of finish appearance:

Matte: Apply & immediately buff surface with semi-damp towel

Satin: Apply & let dry

Glossy: Apply 2 coats & let dry

I used the interior of my 2002 Camaro SS. All photos taken with my iphone.

I used a foam applicator pad to apply. After applying and letting ti sit for a few minutes I lightly buffed the area's.

Here's the consistency of the product on the applicator.

I taped off a couple areas on the door panel with various textures to them. I cleaned the area's with a little APC prior to applying.

This is the leather area on the door panel.

50/50. As you can see it darkens the area. The left side of the tape line had some Meguiar's QID from a couple days ago. Good comparison between the two.

This is a vinyl area on the door panel.

50/50. It was a little hard to capture the area as I was losing daylight but you can still see it.

This is on an area of textured plastic.

50/50. This is one coat and not buffed. The texture hides the shine a little.

Various final shots. These area's were lightly buffed.

Applied it to the dash.

Also applied to these pieces on the door jams of my daily driver

Here are my final thoughts.

First of the scent of the product is amazing. It has that leather scent to it.

As with any other product a little goes a long way. It has a semi thick lotion consistency. It spreads out really nicely. I did get a couple high spots in a couple area's but I tend to think that it was the temperature I was applying it. It was starting to get a little cool but nothing a light buff took care of.

It does darken the appearance of the interior. But the appearance can be controlled. I tend to like the satin look on my interiors. I typically use Meguiar's Natural Shine or Ultimate Protectant. HD Protect falls in between the two in terms of applying, letting it dry and coming back with a light buff.

Overall I enjoyed using it. I would recommend this. It's great because it can be used on all surfaces. It is water based. Again the leather scent just adds to the nostalgia of using it. I can't comment on the durability but if it lasts a month or two then I'm happy.

That us one Clean looking Pontiac interior. These have a reputation for warping and degrading, just like many other GMs of the era, but yours is proof that proper care keeps it nice.

I gave this another go on the interior of my Pontiac Grand Prix which is my daily driver to get a more realistic view of it's performance than in my Camaro that doesn't come out to play as often.

I have to say that having one product that I can use on leather, plastic, vinyl and rubber makes things really easy. I used a microfiber applicator this time and the product finished down a little better than with a foam applicator. I still followed with a microfiber to buff off any excess. It feels pretty good on the leather seats and door panels. Not to slick but leaving a layer of protection behind.

The leather scent of this makes it a joy to work with.

HD protect reminds me a lot of Adams Leather Conditioner.

NICE !!!

Looks like it did a great job.

The dash shot was a little "glossy" for my taste, but that's just me

Great review, looks like it's definitely worth a try! I like the darker appearance, not a fan of gloss but this looks to be not too bad. Is there any type of greasy or slippery feel to it?

None at all. This is a top notch product. It is a little thicker than most dressings, but I believe that is mostly due to the fact that it is cosmetic grade.

You can actually knock the shine down even more with a damp microfiber. It applied better with a microfiber applicator the second time I used it over the foam applicator. The textured dash in my two cars knocks the shine down some so it's not as glossy as it is in the photo. I took these with my iphone so it does appear glossier then it really is.

Straight from 3D's site. I chose the satin route.

I agree with Mark. It is a thick dressing and it does not leave the surface slippery or greasy. It dries to the touch. For $10 it's worth a shot.

Great review Guz! Thanks for trying this out on multiple vehicles.

Is there any type of greasy or slippery feel to it?

Nope! It is meant to soften the surface, but not leave any film/residue behind.

Great point. And you're totally correct. In fact, it's very friendly to your skin. I use it as a hand lotion and my hands have stayed soft all winter.

agreed. I should be receiving my sample kits today! Dress and Protect are just two of the products I'm excited to try. My GF was pointing out some "needs-attention" parts on her leather seats and I wasn't sure which product to try, as I've been putting all my focus on exteriors.

Glad to have this site, and subforum. So far, I've been please with the 3D/HD products I've tried out.

Thanks to all contributing!
