Red Light Cameras

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I would't put running a red light in the same catgegory as exceeding the posted speed limit. Eh, just IMO and all...but the "full stop for a stoplight/stopsign" is something I want people (myself included) to do every time.

I do as well but the state is a bunch of deviants, an I do mean deviants...

Why? A friend of mine "Ran" a light supposedly at night. She swore up an down that she knew the timing of the light in the morning when she went to work, so she did her due diligence. She timed it, long behold it was a 3 second delay in the morning, yet at night it was 1.5 seconds. She then submitted the evidence to the court, long story short the ticket was dismissed immediately.

Again, they are sneaky, very very sneaky. I believe in a full stop to assess but the whole 3 second rule is bogus. That said I understand that we as a society are only as fast as our slowest member. The rules were mean't to protect the not so sharp but there is also the revenue argument which is becoming increasingly more blatant as far as over the top goes.

IMO; If its wrong to run/roll-stop a red light or stop sign then it is also wrong to go above the speed limit. The reality is that there are times that people might do each, which is why this stuff exists.

The Driver- I agree about the whole, uhm..."motives of the State" thing, and I'm glad your friend got the ticket dismissed.

I oughta look up the OH rules on how long to stop.

As for that catering to the lowest common denominator...I wish *all* drivers were actually *tested* in a rigorous and objective manner, but it's just never gonna happen.

HEY! Im playing with immortal Ver 1 right now and I 100% can say... It will not survive an impact from a train. But it easily would drive through a an automatic car wash and not a swirl in sight.

But you're a pro, I'm a hack...............................

Don't ya gotta bake that stuff?

Jsmooth's detail center & bakery. :funny:

Personally, I do agree with you most of the time. If it's a dead end linked to a stop sign sure a roll is more appropriate but in any high traffic area I strongly advise you stop all the way. I'm just saying this because I almost got BLASTED a month ago, I stopped an hesitated for a second thanked and a sewage waste truck BLEW the stop sign almost sheering off my front end. I lost it, chased down the guy an needless to say his boss got a nice ear full. I'm still pissed about, that to me is blatant disregard for human life. Point is you might be sharp but trust me when I say waiting the second could an will at some point save your life.

In city it's the worst, all the elements of society blow stop signs left an right. It's like navigating a mine field.

I believe they did a full episode on myth busters on trying to beat speed/red light camera's and nothing worked reliably. Best bets to get a good radar that has GPS for camera locations or try on the apps for your phone that has them.
Myth Busters said the only way the camera would not catch a plate number would be if you were moving at least 170 mph or higher then you could beat the camera. This leaves me out.

Don't they have to prove it was "John Smith" behind the wheel to give "John Smith" a ticket? I've heard of tickets being dismissed with an appeal that it wasn't the driver behind the wheel. If I let a friend with a valid drivers license borrow my insured car, if he runs a red light; I don't see the logic of having to pay that ticket.

My gripe is this, I don't care if the STATE wants to fine me but the state does not have the money for this project. This lead them to outsource the project to an privately held company who is now making 50+% profit on each ticket, then kicking it back to the state. To this is legalized extortion...

Fun fact each sensor worth almost cost of the whole camera, a laser can fry a sensor in less then 3 seconds. You do the math.

Yes. And with privatized speed traps, you get the same problems that come with private prisons.

It's all about the money, and has very little to do with public safety. Private companies volunteer to install the cameras as long as they get a cut of the fines. Everyone has heard the tales of quotas for State Patrol officers and that the quotas go up around the holidays. I speed on a regular basis and I got pulled over recently. The officer said I was doing 77 in a 55, but he would give me a break and write the ticket for 69 mile per hour so I would not get any points on my license. To me what he did was criminal, I broke the law, why give me a break? I knew I was breaking the law and he should have given me a ticket for 77. Some may say I should have thanked him for giving me a break, I don't, they are paid to do their job, not give breaks. My opinion is that there should be no speed limits, but there is and they should be enforced equally or not enforced at all.

Sure glad you came through that OK! I've gotten to where I basically factor in that *any* vehicle might do just about anything at any time- blow through intersections, change lanes, you name it. People sometimes tease me that I "take all my driving so seriously" but hey, it's serious business.

Thanks,

I think people fail to realize how much power 4000 lbs of rolling mass actually carries. Just getting tapped at 10 mph is very shocking. I have to saying watching a frame being straightened at a bodyshop is probably one of the most humbling experiences as far as respect for vehicles and the force they carry. When you watch the psi on the machine go up you can't help but be amazed. When you think about how much force it took to make the frame contort it really is a chilling feeling knowing what that same force could do to bone (It's literally like pliers and tissue paper).

I completely agree. Ever since I read "A Deadly Wandering", I've never looked at vehicles the same. It's a book based on a true story about an accident that killed two highly recognized scientists by a teenage driver who was distracted from texting. This was before we realized the dangers of texting while driving because back then, texting was still a new concept. The chapter with the accident goes into a lot of details about the physics behind the accident, and it made me take a step back and realize the amount of force involved in an accident. Nowadays we see a Ford F250 driving down the road going 45 mph and we think it's no big deal. But when you look at all of that potential energy, it's pretty scary. The accident in the book involved a big dually truck who was towing a trailer that ended up T-boning a small passenger car.

Right! I've been in countless crashes during training and .. [thinking]... maybe a half-dozen truly serious ones IRL where the vehicle I was in got totaled, so I have a reasonable appreciation for the forces involved. You *really* dodged a bullet with that truck and I'm sure glad you let the company know about the whole thing.
