Zaino clay is repackaged stuff.

Well, I assume you are talking about Meguiar's. They do offer a lifetime warranty on their PC, so you are getting something more for that price. Whether a lifetime warranty and a backing plate and pad vs a 5-year or whatever warranty the $109 Porter Cable offers is worth that much extra is up to you to decide. But it's not exactly the same just in a more expensive wrapper. :wavey

Lol. You was the one who got sucked into the hype. Only blame yourself bro.

No doubt, just passing on my "learned lesson" to others to keep them from doing the same.

I bought some of Zaino's clay about 10 months ago, didn't like it so I bought some autopia clay about a month ago, it was not the same, not even close. I was a little peaved at Sal after I inquired about his horrible clay he told me that I must have an old clay bar and the new ones are alot better, that was it. I asked if I could send the old crappy one I still have back for a new one, no reply, so now I'm seriously debating whether to even use Zaino anymore.

For the original poster how did you come to the conclusion that is was repackage mothers product, maybe mothers could have repackaged Zainos product?????

Next thing we're discover that most MF's (except DF towels) are made by only a few manufactures. ;)

Ah you speek the truth and you don't even know it. :D There is only one large importer of MF towels and they supply to all of our suppliers. And I mean all.............

I feel the same about companies that charge a premium for a Porter Cable ROB. I can get the same product at Lowes for HALF the price ($229.95 vs $109.99).

Bob is exaclty right about the Meguiars G100. Yes, it is the same machine as you can get at Lowes, but with the lifetime warranty and a few extras, it is up to you to decide if the extra cost is worth it. When you have clay markup, you get no extras or a lifetime warranty for your extra money. Huge difference there.

For what it's worth, I bought my PC through Autopia for $179.99. Yes it was more than Lowes but it came ready to use and it was worth paying a bit more to support the site.

It's exactly the same machine just with different accessories and a supplemented warranty.

The G100 comes with a W6000 pad (6" yellow pad attached to a screw-in plate). This pad costs $10-15. No velcro backing plate is included with the G100. Current price at MOL is $225.95.

If you buy a 7424 you get a 5" white pad attached to a screw-in plate. It too does not include a velcro backing plate. But if you buy the 7424 from Coastal Tool, you get it with a velcro backing plate and an extra counterweight (6") all for $119.00.

If you buy a 7336 from Lowe's you get no pad or velcro backing plate. Current price from Lowes is $109.99.

So, the real question buyers need to answer is if the Megs G100 is worth the $106.95 price premium over the Coastal Tool 7424 kit.

Bret's right.

I bought mine from Lowe's so I could have instant satisfaction instead of waiting for the mail. :) Once you add in pads, the prices seemed fairly similar to me.

The way I figure it count on spending $200 roughly once you add pads and polish.

It's common practice for brands to repackage items. I think Scott summed it up best when he said it is not right to claim some special technology or feature that may not actually be added. Zaino would be the last company I would question given their commitment to constantly improving the formula and a record of innovation.

In the short term if you want to keep your cost down then yes go with Lowes or CMA. They come with a limited 1 year warranty. The Porter Cable will easily last that long as they are known for reliability. The value of the price premium of the Meguiars G100 willl show itself when the PC fails outside of the normal warranty period. The price is more comparible when you think long term.

What is wrong with the description of the clay used on the Zaino web site?

'Z-18 ClayBarâ„¢ is a pliable, synthetic bar that quickly and safely removes imbedded contamination from all glass and painted surfaces. Used for years by automobile manufacturers and auto body shops, paint cleaning clay is an excellent choice for removing contamination that cannot be removed using conventional cleaning methods.'

I think that says it all! It's another yellow clay bar. No claims of a unique manufacturing process there :nixweiss

I was kidding.:p

LOL... There's always 2 things on this site that stirs up passion and controversy. A new "ZAINO" post and a "Mike Phillips" thread. BTW "Bill North" have you gotten your daily "What is WOWO and why is it hard to remove" post yet...:sosad Cheers to Autopia, I love the site :xyxthumbs

grt1today,

Haven't gotten a post like that in a while. I've preached enough about WOO. I think everyone knows about it. I even mention it in my sig and avatar. :D

Bill.

Sal's main stream products are his car polishes/wax, wash, spray detailer, rubber/leather dressings, and some of his other items. He offers a full product lineup to HELP YOU! SAL was concerned with people prepping their cars with products that were not compatible with zaino, or substandard products in themselves (old meguires clay for instance that made a mess all over the car) that took away the full potential of Zaino polishes. SAL is the most anal person I know when it comes to car care in his testing and selection. My guess is that he offered the clay because he found a clay that worked above the rest so offered it with his lineup so no guessing was involved and optimum performance was achieved. Remember not everyone has autopian knowledge! Zaino and Mothers clay may be the same product...so be it....they are among the best clay products out there. There ARE only a very few clay suppliers, it is almost unfeasable to manufacture your own clay. I don't see why this is such a big surprise?

Do you have his applicators too? Do you think zaino manufactures his own applicators? I mean just maybe sal raises his own livestock that yields the softest cotton out there...... :bounce :bounce :bounce :bounce

No one has taken into consideration that Meguiar's and Mother's do a much larger volume than Zaino. Zaino is only available through the internet and a diminishing number of distributors. While Meguiar's and Mothers' are also available through retail. This means larger quantiies sold, larger cost breaks from vendors with the end results being a lower cost to customers.

I feel that Sal compensates the customer by selling TWO bars in the container and the use of Z7/H20 as the lube, whereas, others provide a bar and lube ($12.99 for Clay Magic w/ lube, $9.99 for Meguiar's w/ quick detailer, and $15.99 for Mothers' (Mothers' includes clay bar, instant detailer and cleaner wax) versus $16.95 for Zaino Bros'.

Therefore for you pay $.50 for one ounce of Z7 ($7.95/16 oz) and $8.50 per bar ($16.95/2 80 g bars). Tha's only a total cost of only $9.00. That's no more expensive than Meguiar's.

How do I distinguish between the new and old Meguiar's clay? I'd like to buy the Clay Magic type clay locally somewhere. Autozone seems to have pulled it from their shelves. Perhaps the Automagic type is available in stores. Is it called Quick clay? I assume the bar would still be blue.

I would assume the Clay Magic is easier to find in car parts stores than the Meguiars. Auto Zone here never seemed to carry it . I would check with whatever other local car part stores you have near you. A well stocked one should have it. IMO Clay Magic is one of the best locally availible detailing products

Be thankful that Sal is not repackaging Meguiars Clay. Mothers has always been the best clay out there, it only makes sense that is what Sal sells. I have heard that Meguiars has changed their clay but I have not tried the new stuff to say if it is any better.

I mean just maybe sal raises his own livestock that yields the softest cotton out there.

The Zaino cow applicator is pretty nice, but the goat towels can't be beat!

Meguiars Clay is now Clay Magic clay.

I've tried the Mother's clay and hate it. Too plasticky. Give me Clay Magic any day!
