Zaino Application on a car

After reading and reading and reading about sealants and trying to find a supplier of some good stuff in Toronto, it seems Zaino is what is available up here. :bow

I was planning on picking up some Z1 and then applying 1 coat of Z2. I will wait for about a few days and then wash the car and apply a second coat of Z2.

Does one have to remove the existing polymer sealants/wax that are on the car prior to applying Z1? If so, would the 3M One step cleaner wax 39006 be suitable or should I get something else? I am in Toronto so can you suggest some products at are available in Toronto please.

Thanks

The car will need to be totally stripped of anything on the surface. You can't use any type cleaner wax products because the oils will not allow the polymer to bond properly. The best thing before applying Z is to wash the car down with Dawn dishwashing soap, it will strip everything.

I generally get the car washed at the touchless car washes here. Is there not some type of cleaner that I can use instead like a spray and wipe solution?

I am trying to get the car done in a short period of time and not have it take days for a simple process.

A car wash does not take days, it can be done quickly. You could use alcohol to strip the surface, but it still may require a wash to remove any residue. The first few layers will be the base for the entire system, it's best to do it right. You should be able to dawn wash, then Z1 and Z2 within a single afternoon so the process is not long.

You definately need to strip the existing polymer/wax from the paint. A good washing with Dawn should take care of it. Then remember that the key to Zaino is surface prep. The cleaner and smoother the surface prior to starting the Z, the better the result will be. I really would encourage you to closely inspect the paint for swirls and an application of a light abbrasive like 3M SMR or Meguires #9 followed by another Dawn wash as prep work will greatly enhance the results.

why not replace Z1 by ZFX ?

Then you can layer 3 coats in one single day , no waiting for drying .

ZFX is the way to go if you are in a hurry!!!

If you only have a carnuaba based wax on your car now just DAWN wash at the car wash. Remember that Zaino will not be forgiving if your finish is in bad shape. If anything it will enhance any flaws. If you are only going to do the minimal prep your better bet would be to purchase Z5 rather than Z2 also.

Do not under-estimate the importance of surface prep. Since your car is a 2002 the finish should be in rather good shape unless you have been using poor paint cleaning and waxing techniques. Go with the ZFX, Z5, and Z6 to start and when you start to hand wash at home get some Z7. You will be amazed with the Zaino system and its ease of application and durability.

If I use the Mothers CALIFORNIA GOLD® PRE-WAX CLEANER – PHASE 1 on the car instead of the dawn wash, would it yield satisfactory results. According to the Mothers web site, it says that "before you apply another coat of wax onto your vehicle, consider how well you've prepared the surface. Was the paint cleaned first? Our Pre-Wax Cleaner is formulated to clear the oxidation, embedded dirt, road salts, tar, airborne chemical pollutants, stains, old wax and other surface contaminants that may have built up. Pre-Wax Cleaner polishes out minor flaws and smoothes the paint surface."

Right now both cars I have don't have any swirl marks. They have been in the touchless carwashes so only water jets are hitting the paint no soft cloths.

I was thinking of getting the car washed (Not DAWN washed)using the Phase 1 of Mothers to clean the body and remove the wax, and then the Z1 or ZFX and then a few coats of Z2. That should probably take me about 3 hours or so to do.

How much of the ZFX or Z1 and Z2 do I apply. The Klasse directions suggest using a nickel amount at a time. Does this also apply for Zaino?

I don't really care about a show car shine. Just want some GOOD protection and a decent shine that will last for about 4 to 6 months.

The use of the Mother's Gold Wash is okay but to prep for a good bonding of the Zaino polish you must be sure no residual wax remains. The recommended procedure is to use Dawn. If you are unable to do this at home bring a bucket and some Dawn to a local drive-in wash bay and hand wash there. This seems to be your only problem and after this Dawn wash you can apply the Zaino polish and continue to use the laser wash to maintain the clean finish. Zaino is as user friendly as any polish I have ever used and maintaining the shine is effortless with periodic QD'ing with Z6 or your non-carnuaba QD of choice.

The amount to use per panel depends on the size of the car. I suggest using about a 3/8" circle on the pad/ panel to start. It is extremely important to spread ( apply) Zaino very thinly per coat. If you get the ZFX you will be able to apply 3 coats in less than 3 hours. All in one day.:bounce From that point you are good for the next 6 months.:D

That seems to be the problem I have with washes is that the mess of water it creates around the driveway. I think I will just get some dawn liquid and squirt some all over the car and then take the pressure washer at the self serve car wash facility to rinse it off.

Then I can go home take a wet cloth to wipe away any dirt that might appear on the car from driving from the car wash facility to my home. I can then apply the Z1 or ZFX and then a few coats of Z2.

How much Dawn do I squirt on the car?

If I apply too much, will it damage or peel the paint or clearcoat off? :scared

Take a bucket with you to the self-service wash and mix about 1 oz ( ~30cc) in a gallon (~4 liters) of clean water. Wash down and dry off at the car wash. Do a final wipe at home and proceed with the polish. No Dawn will not harm your paint. Believe it or not I am sure the majority of car owners use dishwashing soap as there only car wash :scared.

I personaly don't think it's a good idea to squirt Dawn on your car and drive to de carwash.

Why not mix about 2 ounces of Dawn in a 3 gallon bucket , put a lit on it and then drive to the carwash?

May I advice you to wash in the evening , dry the car and let air-dry over night , then in the morning go and Zanofy the car.

Just MY thoughts
