Glenn22, no matter which process you use there's always the possiblity of leaving some kind of marks behind. I would say as long as you are using a quality drying tool your chances of not are better. Like jaybs95 said light pressure is the key.

I doubt there is any process that would be 100% mar free. With the friction involved, that's almost (if not completely) impossible. The best I think that we can hope for is to minimize the marring as much as possible.
 
I think that there is a point of return here for blotting or wiping....I prefer to wipe the car dry...is this creating a few swirls...most likely....however most all of us, are here daily talking about how to protect our car. We are the same group of people that spend countless hours keeping the finish on our cars in pristine condition...My feeling are for what little swirls I see caused using a high grade MF towel, drying my cars....the amount of surface protection I have on the car is about the only thing that is damaged....I work my cars over weekly with QD spray, S&W, wax, polish, etc....so the amount of induced swirls at the wash stage making sure its done right, is of no consequence to me
 
I lay my WW across the surface then pull across. Then I might go across the area again with minor wiping. sometimes I might leave some slight marring or a couple of fine scratches. Nothing that is difficult to remove. I always go over the surface with somthing after I dry weather it be a QD or QW.
 
I mostly blot. Sometimes I forget what I'm doing and start wiping.
I have drying towels from Poorboy's,PAC and a Meg's Guzzler.They all do a great job when I blot with them.
 
I also swipe using the weight of the WW . Blotting would be fine but i decided it would way more time consuming and not much of a differnce when were talking about leaving some marring/swirls behind.for the most part i use an electric blower then WW and use a MF to dry up the remainder of water left from the WW.

I'm in the same boat as Beemerboy :yes:
 
With a BLACK and a DARK GREEN vehicle in my personal fleet and several of the same from my clients -- it's blotting all the way for me.
 
When i used the QEW i found for the 1st time blotting was the way to go i would blot then use a 2nd MF to buff to a nice finish. For some reason unknown to me when i tried to swipe it made it harder to dry.so for me it's whatever i need to do to get the job complete without causing swirls/marring in the process.up until the QEW i would always swipe.
 
Who blots and doesn't go over the area again for a streak free shine? OR will be waxing/polishing anyway?

I swipe with no added pressure. Never have even slighty scratched the surface, even with waffle weave.

I have used a magnifying glass to confirm for my finickiness.
 
I don't know what I would call what I do. I lay the waffle weave on the paint and pat it down. Than I pull it forward with no pressure on the towel and pat down the next section. I'm not too worried about marring with a quality WW. I have pulled the car into very bright sun light and wiped the hood in a small area just to see if it would marr. It didn't at all. In fact with pressure it still didn't marr. Think about it, if wiping with a MF will marr the finish how do you expect to be able to remove wax and polish with out marring the finish? You apply more pressure removing wax and polish than you do drying.
