Wow! Mike Phillips Just Resigned!

I spoke with Mike on the phone last August about trying to set up a detailing clinic here in Marlborough while Meguiar's was at the NCRS (National Corvette Restoration Society) New England regionals.

I spoke with him for over half an hour that day. Apparently Barry wanted to push the Consumer line of Meg's products over the Professional and Detailer lines, wanting to cater more "to the masses" instead of "car crazies" like us, Mike had a different take...

Mike is following his own drummer, and there are a lot of us willing to "join the band!"

I wish him the best of luck in his endeavour... and looking forward to seeing him on ShowcarGarage again! :bounce

I too spoke with Mike after the MA class fell through. He was clearly at a cross roads in his professional life and needed to make some decisions. I thought his decision was to stay with Meguiar's but clearly his resignation at SCG was only temporary.

 I never thought I'd see the day!

On the plus side, maybe he will be more active here. Sure, he really knows Meguiars products but he also really knows detailing in general. Not only that, he has a genuine enthusiasm for detailing. :)

Hey guys,

I humbly request, for Mike's best interest, that we stop speculating and/or discussing private conversations that have taken place and then posting that information on a public forum.

Mike can't actively post on his own forum until his last day at Meguiar's is over. His last day is Friday, March 9th, so please be patient while he fulfills his duties to Meguiar's. After that date, I am sure Mike will post a comment.

Thanks everyone,

Tim

Barry is obviously running Meguiar's as he should - like a business. He'd rather sell 100k units of Gold Class Wax @ $5 each than 10k units of a professional line @ $7 each...understandable, but the professional line does deserve some more attention.

Does anybody else notice that Barry likes to touch everyone and get right up in their face? I think he likes dudes, watch car crazy sometime, he's always patting some guys shoulder or something...kind of creepy.

Yeah, I noticed that the first time I saw Car Crazy. Kinda jumps out at you....not that there's anything wrong with it. ;)

Barry is a business man first and a car guy second. If they don't promote the consumer line then they take a chance of getting shoved off the shelf at WM, Advance and Autozone. Black Magic was named best wax by consumer reports and TW is releasing new products-the consumer marketplace is competitive for sure. In a company the size of Megs the accountants run the business-not the car enthusiasts.

Are you serious? He's a friendly guy, and pats people on the shoulder and that automatically means he "likes dudes"?

I think he's just a genuinely nice, friendly guy who isn't scared of a little human interaction.

Watch out fellas, next time you're at Meguiar's HQ, Barry might hit on ya! :bolt

Agreed. I met him (and his wife-pics on my website) when I was out in Irvine in 2004. Really great guy, very friendly. :)

U P D A T E !!!

this just in from showcargarage....

Last week, ripples were made in the detailing world when Mike Phillips officially quit his job from Meguiar's, to join me at ShowCarGarage full time. But for personal reasons, that was short lived and lasted only a few days, and he is now back working for Meguiar's full time.

With that, Mike and I have decided to remain friends, but we are no longer in business together in any capacity. In fact, it's very possible that everything that you know about SCG today will change in the near future.

I have had nothing but wonderful support from all of the SCG members to this day. It hasn't been easy, but I still have a strong vision for the future and everything I've been working on from SCG.TV and on will have to come under a different umbrella.

What does that mean for SCG with Mike working full time at Meguiar's, and unable to post on SCG in any capacity? Only time will tell, but I hope that no matter what SCG is called, that the information that I've offered, the support and advice, the products and services will continue to be valued and appreciated no matter what my business is called.

I know this post sounds like I'm leaving SCG, but it's not. I'm not going anywhere, and neither is the content of this forum, nor the store that I've built, nor the products I've invented, but the name SCG belongs to Mike, and we will be keeping it that way.

I'm just hoping that together we can continue to make this forum grow and prosper and I need everyone's support to make this happen.

Any thoughts on using ShowCarDetailing.com as the new name? I don't necessarily want to be confused or closely associated to the SCG name, but there is postive history there as well.

Oh boy. :wow:

Wow, a detailing soap opera. Best of luck, to you, Mike, and everyone else impacted by this.

Edit: Is this a scoop? I just glanced at SCG and MOL and didn't see any news on this.

Trust me, it is true. We've had to cancel our upcoming Class in Indy. :wall :wall :argue

I'm sure Mike will be along in a day or two to explain... either here, MOL, SCG, or all.
