Working With a FLEX Polisher

I would love to have a Flex, but I cant justify the cost. I don't do enough detailing. But, I do have my Makita 9227, so I could just keep learning how to use that. :)

If the main benifit of the flex over a pc is it's correction ability then why not just use a rotory?

The dual action is supposed to be a lot safer for those of us with limited to no rotary experience.

^^^^^^ Yeah what he said. I have rotary experience but I would much rather use the FLEX because it's a safer but still very effective alternative.

I used the analogy a while back that likened a dual action polisher to driving instead of walking (by hand). I think it was Joyride who chimed in and said the FLEX was like a Ferrari of the dual action family. That is very true.

So if you don't like to fly (rotary), but still want to get there fast, choose the Ferrari (FLEX).

Speaking of Ferraris. The annual Ferraris on the Circle car show is next weekend. I'm looking to add to my client list this year.:dnaughty

I have read stories of the flex smoking from the backing plate area, Has this been a problem for any of you flex users? Was this a "first generation" flex problem that was worked out by changes in manufacturing or do some people just get bad ones? If the flex is such a good machine then I want one but this smoking issue scares me because my past experience at taking such a chance tells me that I'll get a bad one.

That issues isn't a manufacturing defect as it seems - so all of them are the same. There was one point when there was a BP change but that was just at the introduction of the Flex on US soil. The smoking issues seems to be from having an unsecured backing plate bolt or from excess pressure. It seems to be a different animal which must be treated differently from other polishers.

FWIW, I just got a Flex also but have yet to use it ... it'll be a fun spring! :bigups

Is the flex heavier or lighter than your typical rotary.
May have to give in and give the flex a try.

does the flex have the same thread size that the PC uses?

The Flex has a forced rotation, so the backing plate is unique to itself. I believe Edge has made a setup for it though. So, to answer your question, no you can't use your PC backing plates for it.

is the backing plate plastic? I saw that there is gear teeth in the topside of the backing plate, I would think that might be a problem, Kind of scares me. I am not negative just want to get down to the longevity of the tool. How long has the flex been around? I just would'nt wany to end up like the first wave of people to buy the X-box 360. I really wany one of these polishers after seeing the videos against the PC. I probably will just take a chance on it and buy one eventually when I see enough evidence that it is tool that will last.

Cuz I'm afraid to.

The flex has all but replaced my pc. All I use the pc for is to apply sealer, etc.

Can't wait for spring so I can really use my FLEX for a good polish! So far I have only used it to apply NXT sealer - works great for that - nice thin, even coat, that goes on fast!

GEW

:welcome: to DC! Glad to have you here.

I bought the Flex when they first came out just cause the pc took so damn long.Ill have to say that the Flex is much better then the pc and that its no comparison.

I also bought a cheap harbor freight rotary to just try and learn on but i like the Flex and dont really have to worry about doing any damage.I got the hang of the rotary pretty quick and all was fine untill i got to close to a trim piece and well you know what happened there.........dumb noob not taping it up.
