Wool Pad

When would you use just a wool pad? Is it something you would use when polishing to get swirls and scratches out?

I always follow wool with foam, if that is what you are asking.

Wool is used to cut faster and IMO safer then a foam cutting pad. Foam creates more heat then wool.

^^ Agreed. However, like was said, you must follow up with a foam pad. I usually go Edge yellow or green wool and then follow with edge blue foam. Then i'll go poli-seal with edge white, leaves a nice finish.

finishing with wool = bad idea

Do you know how to properly use wool pads then? I find very little use for foam pads. I can get a proper finish very easily finishing with wool pads for polish. Then use a nice wax applicator for final waxing. But there's absoutly nothing wrong with finishing with a wool pad if you know how to actually use one.

because a wool pad can cut faster, cooler, easier and safer than foam in my experience.

only use it when the car needs it (not my cars).

I always finish with wool. There are some extremely high quality wool finishing pads out there now. Wool finishes quickly, with a very high gloss, and gets rid of holograms and compounding marks much quicker than foam does. Edge white wool with PO106FF is, IMHO, the very best finishing combination you can get.

I have two black cars so I will test the white wool pad (when I pick it up) against a white foam pad with 85rd. That should confirm which one finishes better.

I think on another color car it would be harder to tell.

I love the wool pads but logic tells me that a finishing foam pad will give a better gloss.

Which am I better off using to remove some light swirls and scratches from a Black Lexus Wool or Foam? If wool, which type of wool pad if I want to use a product like XMT360?

Darren F = You might find it very helpful to try to use the search button for investigating this. There's a wealth of info in here at your fingertips. There's been several long term debates on the whole wool vs. foam debate.

Keep in mind that swirls are micro scratches and there are dozens of applications that can be used depending on how they occured on the finish, severity of them & the desired amount of correction you're after. I find it challenging to try the least aggressive approach to correction.

In a very very basic breakdown comparision foam relys more on the product of choice to do the job desired where the twist, cut, and components of a wool pad usually have more effect than product. Both can achieve desired results and it really comes down to what your comfortable using.

From what I have been reading a wool pad is best if used with a rotary, I only have a PC and do not want to work with a rotary

Any pad can be used on a PC, wool or foam.

Of course that does not mean it will work. I would never use wool with a PC.
