Woman Becomes Quadruple Amputee After Giving Birth

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Sanford mother says she will never be able to hold her newborn because an Orlando hospital performed a life-altering surgery and, she claims, the hospital refuses to explain why they left her as a multiple amputee.

OMG, that is terrible. It sounds like they are trying to hide the fact they are guilty of screwing up big time. I hope she sues them for all they're worth. I think they took alot more than her limbs on that operating table.

Wow that is unbelievable ! hard to believe that can happen. hope they get what is coming to them. can not imagine what she is feeling right now. such a sad story.

Really is sad. Though you have to admit; hospitals do so much more good than bad you can't look down on them for this.

I too hope she sues for this because she lost a lot more than limbs after this surgery.

The hospital is obviously in major CYA mode, as I would expect. I've seen it before. Years ago I worked in a small-town hospital where a medication error on the night shift caused the death of a 14 y/o girl who had a minor procedure done and was just supposed to spend the night died. The hospital had been "upgrading" the nursing staff to all RNs by hiring new graduate nurses that hadn't even officially become RNs yet, and firing LPNs with 10-20 years experience. One of the new RNs messed up, everyone there knew exactly what happened, but the administration went into major lock-down/deny mode and threw out all sorts of implausible possibilities until the proof finally came out in the autopsy. This sort of thing happens far too often. Nosocomial infections are famous for being some of the nastiest, most stubborn bugs around.

OMG :nervous2: thats not right you know ? I hope she sue the ball crap of that hospital.

Man thats just unreal. I mean, how do you go into a hospital to have a baby and then get all your extremites amputated? How would they not know you didnt have MSRA when you went into have a baby is what i want to know. Surely if the lady had been that sick to have that surgery done they would have known about it. I just feel so bad for this lady and her family. And shes got to live with this the rest of her life. So sad.

I hope she's able to get a primo settlement that will give her top-of-the-line rehab and prosthetics and all the medical attention she's going to need for the rest of her life, plus the assistance she's now going to need with child-rearing. There are going to be a lot of related expenses and it won't be a cheap figure to make this right....well, as right as it can be at this point.

geez, what's suppose to be one of the special moments in her life (giving birth), ends up being a nightmare... :(

ugh, creepy. I cannot imagine waking up to see no arms or legs..

"Yeah, I want to pick him up. He wants me to pick him up. I can't. I want to, but I can't," she said. "Woke up from surgery and I had no arms and no legs. No one told me anything. My arms and legs were just gone."

Oh man, there is no amount of money that could make that right. I'd rather be dead than lose a single arm or leg - I couldn't imagine waking up a quadruple amputee. Although I'm sure that any doctors that came within biting distance would regret it :).

"The hospital, in a letter, wrote that if she wanted to find out exactly what happened, she would have to sue them."

You would of thought she would of gotten a lawyer immediately. That is horrible news!

Wow, this is something I would expect in a horror movie, and would not be out of place in the SAW trilogy. Man, I cannot imagine her suffering and mental state from this. I would hope she takes the hospital and involved doctors to the cleaners. Even though, I don't think all the compensation in the world would take away the pain and suffering from something like this.

Maybe the hospital also needs to fully pay for a full time nurse/doctor to stay with her at all times to help raise the child.

what?? Why wouldn't the hospital tell her anything? This is terrible!

No amount of money could set this right, but she needs to get them for what everything they're worth.

Orlando, huh? I guess it must've been Florida Hospital. They're the medical monopoly around here, and bought out every other hospital except one ORMC.

My mom's been a RN for over 30 years with the same hospital... went from Winter Park Memorial, to a Columbia healthcare system hospital, and now this. It was so much better before Florida Hospital, our insurance was actually ok. Now for people on their insurance, they want $40-$50 as a co-pay for one prescription?!

Not to mention that they are indeed firing all the good nurses and hiring newcomers from the Philippines and India. Not saying that these people are bad nurses, but they're obviously new and lack experience. There are even some Florida Hospitals where nearly all the nurses on a floor are newly-immigrated nurses.

edit: n/m, it looks like it was ORMC.

The hospital maintains the woman wants to know information that would violate other patients' rights.

This makes absolutely no sense! What the hell kind of BS answer is that?
