Wiper Chatter

I'm getting a bit of wiper chatter from the driver side wiper near the bottom on my IS and I'm not sure, what, if anything, I can do about it?

I think the culprit would (have) to be Meguiars Ultimate Quik Wax which I use on all of my windows on the IS.

I've never used RainX or any other product on the exterior of the windows, other than car soap during a wash. Anyone have any success in fixing the chatter?

Oh and in case you're wondering, the wipers are quite new on this car as it is garage parked (day and night) and isn't exposed to the elements all that much. They are the factory wipers and I'd probably say they've been used in inclement weather less than 25 times.

RainX is a love-it or hate-it product. I've read on some other forums "I wouldn't put RainX on my windows if it was the last product on earth!!!"

Not only have I never had a problem with RainX, but I love the stuff. Makes the glass VERY SLICK.

+1 for RainX....:cornut:

I concour, I have seen ppl say Rx will stain trim, cause wiper hop, destroy your LSP, cause global warming and all kinda other non-sense. I have used this stuff for 20 years on every car I do, and have NEVER had a problem. I think it ads a little extra something to the job, this way when it rains on a car the day after I do it my work still shows up

If you like Rain-X, I really think you would LOVE Glass Science. It is easier to apply and remove (although I know that it isn't perfect) then Rain-X and IMO lasts much longer.

I used to apply whatever wax or sealant to the window that I was to the car. I was particularly impressed with Blackfire, Gloss-It, and Zaino on the windows. Jack kept suggesting that I try Glass Science, so I bought some and did it on my car.

The first rainstorm I hit I was on the express way and the water flew right off, but to be honest it wasn't any better or worse then any other product at that speed. If a product makes water bead and you are going 75 mph, it should fly right off.

The next night I was driving in my neighborhood and it began to rain. This is when I first took notice of Glass Science; the water was actually beading up and rolling off my window at 25 mph. With other products I would usually need my wipers at such low speeds.

So I did another test. I wiped my window off with alcohol and applied Glass Science to 1/3, Blackfire Wet Diamond to 1/3, and Wheel Wax Glacier 1 Step to the last 1/3.

From about 15 to 30, Glass Science out performs the others. Each bead water very well, with Glacier and Blackfire the beads kind of stay put. With Glass Science the beads are slightly (but noticeably) smaller, and they run off the windshield much faster.

As you go from 30 up to about 50, the 1/3s with the sealants begin to run water, but the Glass Science still does a slightly (but noticeably) better job. The faster you go, the more the advantage shrinks. Past 50 mph, it is pretty much an even match.

For wiper chatter, I would try using Isopropyl Alcohol on the blades, then wiping the with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Keep the blades flipped up if you can and let it soak into the rubber. After a couple of minutes wipe off the excess (if there is any).

I use aquapel and have bosch icon blades on my wifes car and the Valeo Ultimate Wiper Blades on my truck w aquapel. I never get any buildup or chatter.

Thanks for the 411 Todd.

I'll give the ISO + 303 a try (maybe tonight if I get home at a reasonable time).

I was going to buy Aquapel, but might have to give Glass Science a shot first.

After re-reading this thread I had a thought... It could be that the chatter is being caused by wiper blades that are weather hardened. How old are your wiper blades?

EDIT: I just read the first post... QUITE NEW!!! Sorry, just a thought!:p You still might want to check the rubber for cracks or splits.

Ever since I polished my glass (first product was called A-MAZ) and kept it clean, I have had few wiper chatter noise issues. I think clean glass also helps the rubber on the wipers last longer. If I use something like ONR, it also help water just sheet on the glass too.

I notice chatter with newer blades on a window that isn't "wet enough" (if that makes sense). Light mist conditions seem worse (to me) than a good downpour. Older blades have the sharp edge rounded slightly and don't seem to chatter. Also less chatter at higher speed as my blades tend to lift slightly thus reducing the arm down force.

I saw another reply saying the person polishes the windscreen - I too do that (Menz FP on white pad, slow to modest speed) followed by Rain-X which I have been using since 1985.

Regards,
GEWB

I use to have the same problem on my 99 acura (10 years old). I polished the glass. That along with the 303 wiper wipes eliminated my issues. There is no more chatter. The wipers actually clean the windshield.

You can stop the wiper chatter by increasing the tension at the base of the wiper arm. Adjust it a little bit. If you this do not work then just replace the blades.

Old school remedy

This is from a GM Owners Manual several years ago... still works today! Use a grout sponge and Bon Ami Cleanser. It does not scratch glass. It will totally strip the build up on the windshield. Wipe your wiper blades with your winshield washer fluid if you do not have something like 303 WiperTreatment. http://classic-motoring.stores.yahoo.net/303wiptreat.html Now seal your windshield with your choice of treatment.
