winter detail???

Ok I am getting ready to do a winter detail on my car. I am armed with a clay bay KAIO and some megs 16. No I plan on doing 2-3 coats of the 16 but my questions is should I do more than 1 coat of the KAIO and if so how long inbetween coats?

KAIO is a cleaner, so I would guess that the second coat would clean off the first coat. In my experience, you can usually tell when this is happening if the second coat becomes harder to buff off than the first.

I thought it was a cleaner and sealant in one? I did not know if a 2nd coat would enhance the sealant but what you say makes sense. I should have ordered some HGSG as well.

Buschur_Evo- While there are some AIO-type products that do layer (unexpectedly...I can't explain why it works :nixweiss ), IME KAIO isn't one of them; the protection it leaves behind is so minimal that it's barely worth thinking about (no matter what the ad-copy says ;) ).

Trying to layer #16 one-coat-after-the-other never does all that much for me durability-wise; I suspect it's a solvent-action softening the previously applied layer. I used to think it did more than I now think was really happening; I've been paying pretty close attention to the #16 on my wife's car now that I use it throughout the winter, and I've revised my opinion.

With the #16, layering only seems to significantly increase the durability if it's done over a period of time, *unless* you employ some kind of spit-shine technique. In the absence of the spit-shining, you'll probably do best to apply one coat (or two, mainly to ensure 100% coverage) and then wait until after the next wash to do another one. And even then I'd do *some* kind of spitshining, even if it's just a little spritz of chilled water/QD on the panel before you apply the wax.

What about adding HGSG to the mix?

The KSG is good stuff, but a) it looks different from the #16, b) it doesn't hide minor flaws nearly as well, c)it's not as user-friendly, and d) it's really only great IME when it's layered.

I use KSG on one of our vehicles and #16 on another...not a better/worse thing, just different.

Multiple layers of KSG is better IME for winter. But for that matter, Collinite 476S paste wax is also a wonderful winter product.

I do better with those two approaches (KSG and 476S) in the winter than I do with the #16, but the #16 is good too...just isn't quite as bullet-proof as they are. My wife likes the look of the #16 so much better that I use it on her car for that reason, and it's not like it isn't properly protected or anything like that.

could you do KSG with 16 on top of it?

You can, that's what I used to do back when I topped my KSG. It did improve the appearance a little IMO.

But then you can't add more KSG later. Not a net-benefit situation IMO.
