Window Tint Removal

Hello everyone! After driving around for 8 years on my Acura TL, local law enforcement finally got tired of not having my front plate on and for having my front side windows tinted. What's the easiest way to removing the tint? I was thinking of using a steamer on the outside of the window to get the tint hot and residue runny and then slowly peeling the tint off. Then taking a razor blade and PB window cleaner to get the remaining residue off.

What do you think of my method? Anything you'd recommend I do differently? I'd like to know how you guys deal with it. Thanks.

You made it 8 years without hassle. I would pay the fine or have someone sign it off and keep the tint on. California gets too hot to not have it.

thanks for the input. i'm thinking of going to my eye doctor and have him write me a note that says i need tinted windows in the front due to my sensitive eyes. I wear prescription eye glasses so i can't wear sunglasses. has anyone asked their optometrist to write them a note?

You need more of a reason than that. I'm sure they'd just say to get prescription sunglasses.

As for the tint use a steamer on the inside and get it nice and warm and be much easier to peel and will be hardly any residue left.

I had an Clown Deputy pull me over, I was dressed in a suit, going to a Scouting Awards program at Church..

He said I cant have tinted windows and gave me a ticket... I didnt even have those dark limo tint windows I see people with all the time...

Anyone who has tinted windows also knows that the darker the tint gets, the harder it is to see in the dark - especially backing up, right ???

I researched the pain it would be to take this off and all the mess that goes along with it, and decided to get a good Attorney..

Went to Court, with my Counsel, he had researched very well, and found a California Court case that went all the way to the Supreme Court here..

Seems that awhile back then, an 18 wheeler driver was ticketed for the same thing, and he and his company got mad enough to take this all the way up the ladder and I dont know what they said, but the Supreme Court decided it was illegal to prosecute people with tinted windows, because, in the case of this truck driver and his company, it would "Impede Interstate Commerce by truckers", and they dismissed the ticket !

My Attorney handed the County Prosecutor this huge file of paper, he looked at it for a minute, and took the ticket and tore it up and said "never mind"... :)

I sold that truck years later with the tint still intact... :)

I found steam to be very effective at removal. I got a ticket as well, removed the tint, got the ticket signed off, and retinted all within a few days. I can't live with out it.

Run the car with the heat on high for 10-20 min. Peel it off then soak with stoner glass cleaner and it will come off. Do what is needed for law enforcement then reapply a fresh layer.

Stokdgs, seriously? You hired a lawyer over this? I just bought a car that had limo tint on windows and I had them all redone to get rid of that and go much lighter. Removal cost $150. I'm all for sticking it to "the man" whenever possible, but can't imagine your atty charged less than $150, plus whatever the "fix it ticket" would cost. Then have it tinted again.

Yes, hired an Attorney - He was family, I had to help paint his house, which was no problem, since I have a really good Binks Airless and years of experience..

I just felt it was so unfair, it was worth not having to go through the nosebleed of removal, etc.,

And the bust by the Clown was so unnecessary..
