I think the Bible calls it Armageddon.

What is occuring now completely pales in comparison to what occured in the 5 year period of WWII. I did a little research and came up with some statistics.

Among the Allies, the USSR had the heaviest battle casualties, with about 7.5 million dead. China lost 2.2 million combatants; the British about 300,000; the United States 292,000; and France 210,000. A TOTAL of 10.5 million.

Among the Axis powers, Germany suffered about 3.5 million battle dead; Japan 1.5 million; and Italy 200,000. A TOTAL of 5.2 million.

Among the civilian dead the USSR lost between 10 and 30 million civilians; China at least 6 million; France about 400,000; the United Kingdom 65,000; and the United States 6,000. A TOTAL of 16.5 million.

On the Axis side, 500 - 700,000 German civilians were killed; 600 - 700,000 died in Japan; and 150,000 in Italy. A TOTAL of 1.5 million.

These figures are in addition to the approximately 6 million Jews, mostly from Eastern Europe, who were systematically murdered by the Germans as well as an additional 6 million of other groups who died in the Holocaust.

ESTIMATED TOTAL DEATHS = 56 Million plus

So I wouldn't call what is occuring now WWIII or the religious belief of Armageddon.

World wars usually are characterized by super powers laying the smack down on each other. We just happen to be living through tough times with lots of hostility that we are bombarded with, looped every second of every day via 24 hour news networks and the Internet. This brings the reality closer to us like never before.

If I were folks, I would be a lot more concerned about China's rapid economic expansion, military buildup and increasing weaponry sophsitication coupled with their joint militray excercises with a "democratic" Russia (hence our foring closer nuclear and military ties with India). WWIII will occur when China decides to take back Taiwan by force.

Evey decade of every century since history has been recorded is characterized by wars and strife. It is man's inhumanity to man.

Let me be clear about this. I didn't call what was happening now Armageddon. The thread was titled: Will there be a World War III. My response was simply: I think the Bible calls it Armageddon.

While the numbers you stated are almost unbelievable they won't hold a candle to what this "religious belief" holds in store.

With the competition among 24 hour news channels, they need to do something to get attention and ratings. Fear-mongering is common and the use of the term World War II is just another example.

I'm not certain that the lead up to the (still ficticious) WWIII will be unlike other wars. Really WWI & WWII were separate Asian and European wars brought together by: 1) inclusion of other continental powers, particularly North America (especially WWII); 2) the formation of intra-continental allies; and 3) the formation of inter-continental allies.
Any lead up to WWIII in the way people expect it will include very little loss of life. Loss of life is not the issue. Americans are up in arms over a few thousand American soldiers, Canadians are mourning the loss of one soldier/week in Afghanistan, yet hundreds of thousands die in genocides and civil wars in parts of Africa with all the global military activity of a PSP game.

Instead, it seems to me that WWII will be about superpowers and vast loss of life in a matter of minutes. So we're talking nuclear, WMDs etc. I also think we'll see the ancient art of "the siege" with new twists: fuel shortages; destruction of power sources, dams, levies, internet suppliers, cell phone towers, satellite destruction, etc.

This is Israel's approach right now on a quite minor scale.

And "Armageddon" simply means Mt. Megiddo. I've been there, bought the t-shirt. It is a bump on a dry plain in Israel (ancient Palestine). Some ancient Hebrew & Canaanite kings had it out there, but nothing fancy. It is mentioned in Revelation 16.

I think it is funny that people think of Armageddon. After all, in the passage, it simply describes the undoing of creation--it is like the opposite of Eden. It ends with 100 pound hail. It isn't about war, but about renewing creation and actually shows the "non-power" of the nations' superpowers.

So, WWIII does not equal Armageddon.
But death, destruction, and the rest do.

Unfortunately war (or some other type of armed conflict) has raged on this planet for as long a recoded history.

Even though many valid reasons have been mentioned about what would start this...it boils down to none of this.
Unfortunately, it isn't fuel, nor food, and there seems to be enough land for all parties to live on.
It basically is a religious thing, and it seems that certain parties do not wish to live and let live.
As for NK...I have no clue what thier issue is.

Sad to see we are up to 3 people who don't care
And the majority has little faith in humanity

i feel alot of this blown up for the tv ratings. the situation does worry me some. but it is out of my control so worrying won't do much. the problems in the middle east will never go away because it is based on beliefs of religion. unfortunatly some people can't accept other peoples choices. if the fuel supply to north america is deminished, that is when s&#t will hit the fan. the nations(canada and u.s.) will stop very quickly if the fuel supply is cut down or off. maybe cooler heads can prevail.
