Will my tires ever come clean

:ph34r: I`m not saying don`t clean your tires......but tire manuf. put anti aging compounds in rubber for a reason. My detailing regime has evolved over the years and for sure , one of them is tires. I don`t scrub brown out anymore. I just do a very mild degrease, HP pressure wash, dry and apply.

It is sooooooo simple to apply, I just top off if needed.

Never had a tire fail prematurely cause I cleaned one side of the sidewalls too much, and I bet you`d be hard pressed to find a case of it happening. Some people worry about little things way too much.

Tires are the 1 thing that is most dearest to me in any car.....on my leasers, at 24 months, I often will get new rubber, and sell the used ones on Craigslist. I value rubber...With that said, it`s not long enough to see a failure but the fact that anti aging compounds exist in rubber (manuf put them in for a reason), why go to great lengths to scrub it out.

Maybe this would be a different conversation if we dial it back and I am using Z16 and wanted to extend as much life as I wanted out of each application.

In modern times with modern detailing supplies, TS is soooooo easy to apply even that if the ~look~ falls off, all I need to do is just give it another `swipe of the sponge.

I`m with you on tires - that is literally where the rubber meets the road and is critical for handling and safety.
I have TS cleaner and coating and late spring before I swapped out my snow tires I scrubbed and scrubbed with TS Cleaner until the foam was white and applied a few layers of TS Coating. It lasted a couple of months - which seems to be a way shorter time than most others are experiencing, but way longer than all the other tire dressings I have used. I had recently applied Optimum All Purpose Cleaner diluted and I think that stripped off the TS Coating. Anyhow, I don`t think I will use that anymore on the tires and simply use the car shampoos. Anyhow, I appreciate and am listening when you and others mention not to keep scrubbing and scrubbing those tires removing whatever and all the protection placed into them.

I have actually started a thread about this before...probably so long ago it won`t come up properly in the search. I also found that some high-alkaline cleaners seemed to endlessly pull the anti-ozonants from the tire, and decided that it wasn`t such a good idea to keep cleaning and cleaning. And newer tires are definitely more prone to this...as they have more anti-ozonants in them.

Over time I switched to cleaners that are less aggressive (at least to the anti-ozonants), as Stokdgs noted, the Tuf-Shine cleaner is one of the best. I also switched to better tire dressings which also seem to cause less browning. I`ve also discovered something else...I bought some CarPro Ech2O on a lark on a good sale. Usually when I do a rinseless wash I still do a conventional wash on wheels, because I like it better and because I have so much conventional soap to use up. Anyway, it was winter, so no hose, so I used the Ech2O on some dirty tires where the dressing was tired and had some brown spots. Darned if it didn`t shine the tires back up and lessen the brown.

In fact I just did this the other day, because I`m old and tired, instead of scrubbing and redressing some tires that had some brown around the edges, I scrubbed them just in the brown spots with the Ech2O, and hey--they`re not brown anymore.

Heh heh, as a guy who simply *hates* sliming his tires, I`m finding this thread interesting, or at least amusing :D You guys make prepping for/applying the coatings/etc. sound just as bad as the stuff I hate doing! OK, I bet it`s not really as bad, but it really does sound like it to me.

I don`t seal/coat my tires so I guess I don`t *need* to get them all that clean, which is good since I don`t. I`m glad nobody seems to be damaging their tires doing it, but I dunno.....

Setec Astronomy- IIRC you`re not much, if any, older than I am and I`m certain you`re younger than Accumulatorette. If that`s indeed the case, mister...we`re not old yet, so you`re not..not by a long shot ;)

Accumulat. Have you jumped the fence yet and tried a coating.

Tires is much different than paint...in that in comparison to paint, it`s really not ~that permanent~ on tires, I suppose just due to dynamics of how conditions tires see. Try it. Maybe it will be the 1st step to paint coatings , Ha.

I like it and it`s not overly gloss. The one thing is does it that it last a whole lot more than Z16 ...which was my former top tier.

What dilution ratio did you use? I use OPC at 5:1 out of an IK foamer and have had very good results

Going way back to the OP here... Were you by chance cleaning the tires on a hot sunny day in direct sunlight? I was cleaning some tires today thinking about this and remembered that in some cases from my experience, a tire would just not come "clean" (white foam) when working in direct sunlight, while the other tires on the other side of the car (shaded) would come clean after 2-3 rounds. All this talk about the anti ozone stuff in the tires has me thinking that they are more susceptible to cleaners when being beat on by the sun.

Its not often I see this happen but I started to notice a pattern about a year ago when it came to tires seemingly not coming clean after countless rounds of tuf shine

Low 70`s, low humidity and totally in the shade.

I gripe how I hate to dress my tires, and how long it takes, and how I have do it at most every wash, but there`s no way I`m spending the kind of time that some of you must be. So, here`s a Q from out of left field:

Noting that OK, this *is* Autopia...other than prepping for a Coating, or maybe a Tire Sealant, do people really care whether their tires are all *that* clean?

I mean...I like mine to look "like new tires". So I get them relatively clean and I dress them with matt/satin-finish Tire Slime and viola, they do look like new tires for all practical purposes. Good enough for me, but they sure aren`t white-glove clean most of the time (like, basically never).

So where do my fellow Autopians stand on this? Is it just another less-than-Autopian aspect of my Detailing or is my approach more like the norm? Just curious, and I sure recognize that we all have our do/don`t-care aspects of this Detailing stuff.

I don’t necessarily care how clean my tires are just as long as they look good. I’ve even been known to dress *both* sides of my tires on my vehicles that have never seen bad weather. I use PERL at the moment. Accumulator, what dressing do you use?

Bill D- I don`t dress the back sides, but I do occasionally clean them. Gonna try to *NOT* remember that you`ve gone the extra mile ;) No percentage in "trying to keep up with Bill D", I know I`d fail!

I`m still using up my *old* (and I don`t mean just 10 or even 20 years either!) Griot`s (yucky brownish stuff with some lumps now due to age/storage conditions, seems like it shouldn`t work OK but it does), my even older Pinnacle (which is still like new), and my v1.0 Z16 (got another bottle from a member here, so I`m set for years with that too). I might have to buy something in this lifetime, but maybe not, I still have well over a gallon between those three products and I use it very sparingly.

FWIW, the V1.0 Z16 is my overall fave, but I always reserved that for the good cars, which don`t get used much (at all? :o ) any more.

LOL. I don’t want you thinking about trying to “keep up with me”. I’m sure your cars are incredibly immaculate even if you spent half the time that you do on them.

I have the old Z16 stuff too. It’s a great product along with PERL although I plan to use Duragloss 253 when I run out.

Bill D- I bet we all have our strong/weak points when it comes to this stuff, at least those of us who use `em like real cars. And oh man am I trying to spend less time on Detailing!

I never did try the little sample of Perl I got, wonder if it`s still any good? And yeah, if I *do* ever run out, that Duragloss is on my shortlist.

I’m pretty certain that PERL ought to be fine. Mine isn’t new and it still is. Give it a shot and see how you like it. ...

That`s a hard sell if you reach for Z16 ;-)
Love the looks. Hated its longevity
Heh heh, you`re right! But I end up resliming my tires pretty much every time I clean the wheels anyhow, and that`s a lot more often than I wash the whole vehicle. Can`t say I ever noticed the Z16 needing redone more than the others, but then I`m not inclined to do anything if the tires are the only part of the vehicle that looks bad. Yeah, I know..but sigh, I just don`t care that much any more :o

I haven`t driven any of the cars I use Z16 on since forever, and back when I was driving those I didn`t mind Detailing all the time...drive it/Detail it/repeat. Guess I haven`t used any Z16 for three or four years now, maybe longer; those cars just don`t get used the way they should :o
