Why do same color cars look different?

Just wondering how 2 cars of same color can often look pretty different? I know prep and then LSP would have something to do with it.

Example my car is on the extreme right, same colored car to my left. Notice a difference?

FWIW my car had SSR, AIO and 2x KSG

Oh not just in pictures, in person they looked different. Mine seemed a tad darker or a tint darker. I always wondered that and never had a pic. Came across the pic so decided to post and ask :).

You got it= there are two reasons: prep and LSP. My wife and I have Audis with the same paint code, built in the same factory (and repairs were done to both with the same paint too). A friend of mine has an S8 that's absolutely *identical* to mine. These cars look so different that you'd swear all three have different paint (I'm not talking about subtle differences, at least when they're side-by-side).

With my wife's A8 vs. my S8 it's primarily the LSP. With my pal's S8 vs. mine it's primarily the prep- his has micromarring and mine doesn't.

Coool thanks accumulator! I figured it might be that, I notice the same thing when parked next to different cars of the same color.

No doubt about it. Prep and LSP can "influence" the look. There are countless posts in this forum about the nuances of color, depth, and wetness that certain products provide.

That's the fun part--you can try what you like, and hopefully you will have what's perfect for you, before you go broke buying products!

micromarring/swirls

darkening LSP

Any of those could effect the way the color looks. Also, your car has darker wheels, which may be tricking your eyes a bit. The shiny wheels of the other car cause the entire car to appear brighter.

I am sure the paint mixing at the factory plays a part too. I've seen brand new cars at dealers that are the same color and you can see slight differences in the color.

It is actually the painting process. When the guns switch from one color to another, the remaining minuscule amounts of paint can cause a slight difference. The cars passing through the paint booth in the middle of the given color cycle, have the same color, while the others at the earliest parts of the next color cycle will have anomalies. The atomizing bells (spray guns) are spinning at a very high rpm, so the residual paint is almost negligible but only almost.

Ah...hadn't thought of that!

With our two Audis it *is* mostly the LSP though. I play around with what I use on her A8 and I can make it look more/less different from mine with different LSPs.
