Read one of the Road Rags while sitting in the waiting room this week, they were comparing the GT 350, GT 350R and the Z/28. They claimed the 350R beat the Z in every measurable category. Ford has lost ground, literally with their brake setup in past model years and seems to have corrected that. It appears that the carbon fiber wheels have a lot to do with that and also appeared to be the biggest differentiator between the 350 and the R models. These models obviously don't have the more common Coyote in them but rather the new flat plane VooDoo platform. The Z pulled the GT 350 by a couple of seconds around the track used for comparison, the R pulled the Z by roughly the same amount. They actually raved over the ride compliance of the Mustang. Who'd of thought that would be a consideration for a track car?
I've said this before but I don't think the Corvette is the Mustang's primary competitior. Who knows maybe some of the Shelby's are and that may be where Ford has it's sights set? I believe the Mustang aligns better with the Camaro in heads up competition. As far as a car show goes these are the two companies American icons.
