I guess it all depends but my guess is that the foam finishing pad would be less abrasive to the finish both with the PC and a rotary.
 
That really depends on who is behind the buffer. I have never been able to get satisfactory results using a lambswool pad, but I have seen awesome results from some "old school" detailers.

Foam to finish has always made more sense to me in my mind.

Personally I would use foam...I would also think it would be less abrassive. I am not sure I have ever seen a wool finishing pad.
 
I asked my friend at the body shop about wool or foam pads and he uses wool pads for cutting and leveling paint such as after wetsanding.
He can finish up pretty good with just the wool, but he usually will follow up with a foam pad.
All done with a rotary.
He considers my PC to be a toy.
I consider his rotary to be a dangerous weapon. :D

Once you try a rotary with a foam compounding pad you will realize just how weak the PC is. The PC is great for finishing.

I don't disagree with what you are saying, but for me, it could be stated a little differently.
Once I tried a rotary with a wool compounding pad I realized just how powerful the rotary was.
For me, the weak PC is a lot safer.

I have never really given using a rotary much thought, but...... I could probably practice at my friends body shop and eventually become proficient with the rotary. That might be something worth pursuing. :hmmm:

I have had amazing results with both a wool and polishing pad. Wool is good but becareful with what polish you use. Wool will heat up much faster therefore drying out your polish.

A wool pad can also leave haz and swirl marks if your not careful or have enough experience.

For the question your asking I would go with a Foam pad. Try spiltting the hood up in 2 sections.. try a wool on one side and foam on the other then you decide which you can acheive better results with

I started doing this before foam pads became available ... I know, I am old. Today I use a wool pad (finishing pad or otherwise for the initial buffing of paint that has been wetsanded or is severly damaged and then final polish with a foam pad both on the rotary and PC. I agree, once you get used to the rotary, the PC seems like a toy. However, the PC does a great job ... it just takes a little longer.
Just my humble opinion.
