Which watch for detailing?

I typically remove my jewelry when I detail other than my ring (since that is under a glove anyway) but around this time last year I started wearing a Fossil watch with a rubber strap. I wanted something waterproof but wouldn't cause too much damage if I nailed the paint with it. Obviously hitting the paint with the face is bad news regardless of the strap, but I have found that hitting the band against the paint is more common than the face. I've had a couple close calls with metal bracelets in the past, so I got this one to be on the safe side. Am I just weird, or has anyone else got a watch they bust out specifically for detailing? That is honestly the only time I wear that watch. Before this one I was wearing a Seiko 5 one with a nylon strap. That worked out pretty well, but the strap starts to smell when you get it wet. Leather is the same way and it starts to fall apart, so I figured a rubber strap is the best way to go short of removing it entirely.

I always wear a watch but I take it off when detailing. I will say that metal bands are uncomfortable when I start sweating. Watches with rubber bands are better for heat and sweat. Easier to clean too.

If I need to see what time it is while detailing, I either rely on a wall clock or pull my cell phone out of my pocket.

I've tried that, but I've never been able to get used to it. I know a lot of people have gotten rid of the watch in favor of the 'pocket watch' cell phone, but I'm just used to the whole wrist thing. Most of my detailing is outside of my garage, so no wall clocks. I usually have my cell phone sitting on a sunroof or something so I can hear it if it rings anyway, so I'm left with the watch option. I wish I could get used to not having a watch so I could get rid of this tan line. lol I've taken to removing my watch when I'm riding a long distance on the bike just so I can get some sun there. lol

I'm with Shiny on this one. I have a decent collection of watches but they are worn outside of detailing.

I used to always wear a watch and have a Timex with a rubber face guard and leather/canvas strap. It worked fine until detailing an engine bay for a show and found myself hung up between the steering box and frame.

I guess I reached to far into the unknown. I had to cut the strap with my 4" Kershaw to get out. Luckily I had it on me because I was by myself.

Yikes! Yeah, I can see that happening. I always remove my watch when doing engine details simply because I'm not willing to scratch the crystal, but I never considered getting stuck! That would really suck!

I listen to my favorite radio station. The announce the time often enough and I know their DJ schedules so I use that to gauge time.

I always take off all jewelry and am careful about what I wear so that there is no exposed metal. It has become a ritual when I arrive at a job to remove my watch and sun glasses before I get out of my car.

I'm with the cell phone or radio dj group. Not only is there a chance to damage a car , its a good way to ruin a good watch.

Never wear any jewelry while working on a vehicle or outside, period.

I dont need to know the exact time that bad. If I need to, my android clips on the side of my jeans and I can revolve it around and check.

Jewelry and working on cars = not fun for me.

I wear a micro fiber apron when I detail (I don't even like my jeans to come in to contact with a car). It has a large open pocket at the waist. Just drop my cell phone or watch in it.

When I am detailing, I'm detailing, not trying to win fashion awards. I consider a watch hazerdous to the job so I don't wear one. I am sure you can figure another way to tell time......

I'm a big time watch fanatic, but outside of QDing, I don't do any real detail work wearing one. I do have a nice neon light bordered clock in the garage.

Well, if you were going to wear a watch. Which one would be the same as wrapping your wrist in bubble wrap while detailing your car?

A timex tri-athalon with rubber strap and tape on the buckle.

I'd like some other suggestions too!

Wish I still had my old watch that was issue to me when I was in the military.

This one looks just like it.
