Which states prohibit you to pump your own gas?

Charles- Please, don't lol.

Thats the problem with Jersey, the assume that they're special and what works in other states won't work for them. It really is like a whole nother country, my fiance is from NJ and I tense up the minute I cross the border. I really don't like it.

Take the argument about handicapped people not being able to find full service stations. Again, in 48 states somehow they do. Do they not have handicapped drivers in these 48 states? I bet they do. Still, NJ is special and different. As for not being able to find full serve stations, I can name 5 within 5 miles of here. You have to pay more but the attendents actually PROVIDE service because its optional, they ACTUALLY clean the windows etc.

Its just dumb, on the NJ Turnpike you have to wait 45 minutes for gas and the lines are 20 cars deep, not so in DE, not so in NY, not so in PA, not so in MD. The only time my dad ever had a credit card stolen in 35 years of using them was on the NJ Turnpike getting gas. Its just a stupid, stupid law.

I fill up the last stop in DE and will let it run on fumes coming back to keep from getting Jersey gas. NY is annoying too with the outlaw of the pump holders so you have to stand there but not as annoying as NJ.

As for it being hard to get out of your car to pump gas, no offense but if you can detail your car you can pump gas. I've never stepped in gas, never driven over anything, when its cold I just get out, put the pump in and get back in. No big deal. If you don't want to do it then find a full service gas station, they DO still exist. Why should I not be allowed to pump my own gas because you don't want to get out in the cold? Thats why there's a choice.

I'm sorry for handicapped people, but the law is very clear. Handicapped people have the right to ACCESS, and that access may or may not be at their own expense or trouble. Maybe the thing to lobby for is that a certain number of gas stations within a certain radius must have full serve capability. Handicapped people don't have the right to make carmakers outfit all cars so parapalegics can drive them for instance, they can make those modifications at their own expense. They don't have the right to demand that apartment owners make all apartments fully accessable for people in wheelchairs, but they are allowed to make reasonable alterations at their own expense, and must return the property to its previous state when they leave. They don't have the right to make ALL of us let other people pump our gas.

You don't weigh 500 lbs., have congestive heart failure, swollen legs, arthritis, etc, etc, etc. Haven't seen a full service station in three years now.

Well then I would lobby for what I said, a requirement that a certain number of stations provide full service within a certain radius, I think thats fair. Its good for the station owners because they get an increase in business, and its good for handicapped drivers because they don't have to pump their own gas.

Again though, if you can detail your car can't you pump your own gas?

EDIT- I'm not trying to belittle your condition, my dad has congestive heart failure and reduced heart function, my uncle is paralyzed after a stroke, my fiance's father has congestive heart failure and subsequent obesity, and I have heart problems myself I can certainly understand your position. Again though, the only person I feel that needs accomodations made for is my uncle. My dad works every day, travells around the country for his job, plays golf, my fiance's dad loves going out on his boat and his waverunners and travells all around the country for his job, and I lead a normal life and detail my own car. No need for special accomodations for any of us.

The reason they have 20 cars deep on the NJ TPK at or near the borders is the gas is about 30 cents less per gallon depending on your home city.

I never buy gas on a toll road if i cant avoid it. I think the law stinks too but so many people dont want to fiddle with something for fear we will end up with the prices we see over the border.

I havent a clue why it would effect price either.....

Another silly NJ law, you cant get a free glass or carwash with a fillup, ever. As a kid I would see the ads for free stuff with fillups and always at the end it said Offer Not Valid In NJ. Silly indeed.

One nice thing to say about NJ laws, from someone who drives to Fla a few times a year. We have a law to keep right on the highway left is for passing. maybe 30% follow the law but when you leave NJ and 100% dont stay right including trucks for 1400 miles I get very frustrated. We also have no truck/Buss in left lane, god I wish the rest of the US adopted that law.

We also have the highway divided with safety barriers that were pioneered here in fact they call them Jersey Barriers nationwide in the highway biz.

All is not lost fellow NJ people, Btw Im Paul and im from Exit 15w!

No insult taken. I can barely detail my car. It takes me about 6 times as long as a healthy guy to do a full detail (interior, exterior, and engine). Thank God for QD sprays!!!

I haven't bought any Poorboy's Spray and Shine yet, but when I do, it'll be by the truckload. Talk about a Godsend product!

Oh, I can pump my own gas. The standing up while pumping isn't the problem; it's getting out of the car that's the problem. I have to get one leg out, then the other, then rest with both feet on the ground. Then I have to use the door as a support to lift myself into a standing position. This might take upwards of 2 minutes.

I'm in NJ and HATE when the guy rounds off the price to an even number ESPECIALLY when I pay with my credit card. I stand outside and when it stops, I tell them to take it out.

One time, he dribbled gas on my car and I took his window squeegy and wiped off the gas until I got home. He flipped telling me that I got gasoline in his window washing water! So I calmly said, "It looks like you'll have to change your water. Drip gas on my car and I'll do it again." Then I drove away.

But when it is 2 degrees outside, it is nice to hang in your car and listen to the radio and sip your coffee.

I had that happen once, an attendant with greasy hands came out and starts leaning all over the paint while putting the nozzle in, and proceeds to grab a dirty rag to wipe his prints off with. I told him to get the hell away from my car, paid for the little bit of gas he'd managed to pump and drove off.... I'll never live in a state that doesn't allow me to pump my own gas.
