Which states prohibit you to pump your own gas?

New Jresey you can't. In Pa. you can pump your own.

BUT living within 2 or miles from New Jersey you sometimes forget and grab the nozzle if no one is around. That makes the attendants come running out real quick........
 
I believe Seattle is also a no slef serve place



Strange we cant pump our own but its still 30 cents cheaper than some other places. I really wish I could pump my own though
 
When we were in Seattle we pumped our own gas. If it was illegal, I'm sure attendants would have been running out. Who knows.



I'm 99% positive Oregon prohibits pumping your own gas, or at least they used to.
 
I think last time this came up here in NJ (about allowing self-serve), we were the last state to not have self-serve. We have a strong lobby here with the gasoline retailers, I forget what rationale they use in their lobbying and/or what their real agenda is.

That's the one I was really wondering about. I'm thinking of moving to Oregon in a couple years, and I would prefer not to have some careless attendant near my car.

My parents are taking a vacation to Oregon in June. They'll undoubtedly fill up many times, and at many different areas of the state. They will know for sure whether you're allowed to pump your own gas or not.

Those gas jockey dont give crap about your car. I see gas drip right into the gas cap panel areea :scared

I always keep my eye on them, if they spill gas on the panel, I quickly wipe it down with water.
 
I'm up in washington state, here you can pump it yourself. But in Oregon you can't. When I drove up here the first time a few years ago to visit family I tried to pump my own gas at like 3:30 a.m. and thought the store had just got robbed when some guy came bustin out the door :shocked he then informed me that he could get in trouble if he would have let me pump it myself, and thats why he didn't like out-of-towners:argue. But anyways, now that I regained my train of thought, Oregon is in-fact gasoline stain country, becuase lord knows if they drive a 88' escort, and you don't they won't be very carefull:angry .
 
Looks like Oregon & NJ are the two states that won't let you pump your own gas.

I guess Oregon's reason is for "job creation" and in Jersey it's because pumping gas is "Hazardous." Looks like I've been putting myself at risk for decades and I didn't know it! Also, I guess unemployment is my fault too...



I honestly don't even know where a full-service station is anymore.
 
Okay....so the lobby here in NJ says pumping your own gas is "hazardous". They obviously have another agenda, and I think it's that the lobby represents "service stations" which do car repairs, and that if we have self-serve, the "service stations" will get drawn further into price wars with "gas-only" stations.
 
The other concern in NJ was the Handicapped drivers, they lobbied to have full service since they would have trouble getting full service. I know only because when in high school and pumping gas the law was challenged and the major obstacle then was the lobbyists. The stations would love self serve, a minimum wage workforce is nothing but trouble for the owners, if they could get out they would.



The anti self serve crowd also claimed that once they got rid of the law you wouldn't be able to find full service anymore, pretty true in a lot of places I travel to. I prefer self serve but I see their point, sitting im my car when it was 5 F last week was a good thing.



I hate gas spills on my cars but to be honest I cant say I ever had a stain even after repeated spills? Maybe back in the day when Sunoco dyed the premium blue but not in years. Maybe I just keep that area protected I dunno?
 
At a rest area/gas stop on the NJ Turnpike, I had a gas attendant tell me that "NJ State law says I have to check your oil... please open your hood"



I asked to see a copy of the so called "law".. he just mumbled something and walked away...

Glad to see the Rt. 95 scam is alive and well! As a NJ resident, I apologize. I wonder if he was just trying to sell oil or if he was going to cut a hose or belt under there like they taped the guys doing years ago on 60 minutes. I drove to FL 20+ years ago, and used a gas credit card at some different station that accepted the card. Lucky I saved my receipt, because they changed the numbers on the copy they sent to the oil company...of course there was also that time back in the carbon days I caught a kid putting a second receipt under the one I was signing, and that was at a local station. I guess he was trying to get a free tank of gas on me.



That's why I laugh about all this biometric identification...how that will have some impact on crime or credit card theft or whatever...the crooks will always find a way...
 
Mike... no apology needed. I knew that "Joisey" had a law against self serve gas sales, and that the attendant was trying to pull a fast one. I just had the oil changed in the Jeep the day before we headed off to Williamsburg, VA, so I knew that it would be fine.



The attendant did get highly upset with me when I asked him to slow the pump's delivery rate down. I told him that there was no way that I would pay for any gas that ended up on the side of my Jeep as "spillage".
 
The guys on the Turnpike are the worst, i will drive on fumes to get my local places. At least there they know me and when they are allowed to pump my gas they go ever so slowly and gently, throwing them a buck helps.



You would think they do my windows but I cant tell you the last time I was offered, full service huh. Of course I would decline but its nice to be asked!
 
using attendants sucks. especially since the law (at least in oregon) only requires one attendant per station. Think about one attendant at a 20 pump interstate gas station - i waited around for a five minutes before I put in my CC and just started pumping my own gas. the guy came over when I was done and started yelling, but I just drove off.



totally dumb law - if you want to create jobs, how about creating real jobs instead of some minimum wage no future positions



the inability to pump your own gas, rediculously slow drivers (35 in the fast lane a 55 on an empy dry highway), and the nasty weather all made me decide to not move up there. I lothe going to Portland

Maybe I should lobby for Maryland. It is difficult to climb in and out of my car to pump gas. I get cold in freezing temps. Last week, I stepped into a puddle of someone else's gas and tracked it into my clean car. :angry This morning, I drove over a broken glass bottle that I thought was loose ice. :angry :angry :angry



A risk of an occasional spill on the rear quarter panel at a 30 cents-per-gallon savings sounds pretty good, to me.
