Which products to use for hand polishing?

Hello Autopians, I have been on these forums for a while mostly just reading a lot of useful information.

I am looking for opinions on which products I should use on my car and the order that I plan on using.

I want to polish out as many of the swirls and scratches as I can by hand and fill in the rest if possible before actually correcting the major scratches in the summer. Is what I have listed here ok? I'm working on a blue Mitsubishi Lancer from the 90s so I believe the paint is not very hard.

I will be using ONR to wash and maintain the car.

which is better for a first step polish? M105 or Meguiars Ultimate Compound. Or is there something else I should use?

I want to follow with M205. Is this ok for a final polish?

What is a good product to use here to fill in the remaining deeper scratches and swirls that can't be removed by hand and allow the Collinite 845 to stay on the paint?

Autoglym super resin polish, poorboy's world black hole, Meguiar's ultimate polish, or something else you would recommend?

Is there anything I should be doing here before putting on the 845?

I heard good things about Collinite 845 so I will be using this as my LSP.

I also want to restore the fading black trim around the windows. What should I use to do this? I will also be using Collinite 845 to protect the trim when it is black again instead of grey. Will the 845 by itself do anything to darken the trim?

Are any of these steps redundant? Is there something I can use to polish and fill at the same time?

105/205 will be fine or their consumer equivalents. That said, I'd just grab some SRP and use it instead until you can get a machine. I'd rather do odd jobs for other people to earn enough for a machine than spend the time doing it by hand.

OK so I should skip the m105/205 and go straight to the SRP?

Would the 845 on top of that work?

As noted, you should *really* give thought to finding the $ for a polisher. Really. OK, OK...

I'd give it a claying, even just a quickie job while doing the wash would be better than nothing.

I wouldn't skip the by-hand polishing. Try just the Ultimate Compound. Use foam "wax applicators" and buff off the residue with decent MicroFiber ("MF") towels. See how it looks after that. You *might* want to follow up with something milder (Scratch-X v2.0, M205, something...) but it might not be necessary.

The SRP is very good stuff, but it won't work miracles so have realistic expectations. IME (and I've used it a lot), it's not finicky stuff, just keep it off black plastic/rubber trim.

Likewise, the 845 isn't finicky. IME it lasts fine over stuff like SRP, no need for it to go over "bare paint" for good durability.

BUT..and IME it really is a *BIG* "but", ONR can mess up 845. I have no idea why, and many, uhm...."experts" say it shouldn't happen, but it does for me and for others as well. This might be a big fly in the ointment, consider what a hassle it'll be if most of your washes kill your wax! No, I don't have a good solution as, again just In My Experience, ONR and 845 simply don't play nice together :nixweiss

I am going to be ordering all of these supplies online so would the M105 work just as well as the Ultimate compound? which is more aggressive?

What kind of clay should I be using? Does chemical guys blue clay work?

ONR killing the 845 puts a big hole in my plans. Is there a wax you would recommend that works with ONR that is just as durable and safe on trim as the 845?

Use this by hand:

Seriously.

I used UnoV4 yesterday via G110 and loved it. Loved it even more when I did under the door handles by hand. I used a MF applicator and it removed all but the deepest scratches.

I've never used UC,but IIRC it's a bit less aggressive than M105 but more user-friendly and better-finishing.

Never tried the CG clay; I'd probably lean towards ClayMagic blue.

Sorry, but I'm not a big ONR user so I can't really say. Gee..I'm not being of any help here...845 is kinda unique in the way it works fine over all sorts of stuff (like SRP) and is good on trim.

Thanks for the help guys. I definitely plan on getting a machine eventually but just not at this time.

Ok so I've decided to use:

ONR

CG blue clay

Meguiars ultimate Compound

Autoglym Super Resin Polish

And I just need a wax to replace Collinite 845 that will not get removed by ONR.

What if i used collinite 915 instead? would that work with ONR?

Dunno, but ONR messes with their 476S too, so I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Grab some Optimum Car Wax. It's all around great, fills minor swirls and works very well with ONR. Should be great on top of SRP.

If you're looking for something that ONR will almost certainly play nice with, I'd get Opti-Seal :D I'm pretty sure they'd work perfectly fine together :)

Well I've decided to use the optimum car wax which comes in a spray bottle. Now I just wait to get my products.

It might also be worth considering Optimum GPS.

If SRP is still under consideration, the best product to top it IMO is Autoglyms Extra Gloss Protection. Both of these products can be layered. EGP & SRP do not seem to have any problems with ONR

Optimum (spray) car wax is a great product, btw. I have multiple carnuba waxes, sealants, etc but I find myself using the spray wax.

Or you can supposedly mix the SRP and EGP together to make a home-brew cleaner wax that'll last longer than the SRP by itself.

SRP mixed with EGP sounds like an interesting experiment. I have just put some Permonan on my car but once this fades I will try it. By the way, it is really nice to read your posts again.

Let us know how well the mix works.
