Which polish? 1Z or #83

I just got a pc and want to remove the swirls and light water spots of my Black 2003 Saleen 281. The car is fairly new and i dont want to over polish it. I want to know which polish is more/less abrasive and would give me better results with out removing to much clear cote.

Thanks in advance.

There are different 1Z polishes- Ultra/Extra, which is *more* abrasive than DACP, Paint Polish, which is similar to, but probably milder than DACP, and Metallic Polish, which is much milder than DACP (there are a few more, too but these are the "regular" choices).

IMO a beginner would be more likely to get good results (with little frustration) using a combo of 1Z PP and MP. 1Z products are very user-friendly and won't take off too much clear.

If you choose to go with DACP instead, get something milder for a follow-up to remove any micromarring.

I find the 1z PP to be a lot more user friendly in all application methods than DACP. I suppose they are pretty close in terms of abrasivenes and I wouldn't worry about removing too much clear especially with a PC. Both produce great results but for ease of use/quicker results I give the nod to 1z. If you are very finicky or are planning to use a sealant such as Klasse or Zaino after the PP, I suggest wiping down with an isopropyl alcohol/water mix to remove the waxes contained in the PP, those sealants will not bond properly if you don't--will also reveal any defects still in the paint the PP didnt remove on the first pass.

thanks for your help, last night i found a bottle of 3m finess-it II fine cut polish and tried it out with my new pc. It removed all the swirls and light scratches with the white pad. I was very impressed. I ordered a can of 1z mettalic polish to final polish it.

I have used 1Z PP on 3 black vehicles (1 car, 2 trucks). I agree it was easy to use but I personally do not like it. I don't think it is aggressive enough for black paint. I was looking into trying some DACP but ended up ordering some SSR2.5 Hopefully that will cure my black car swirls.

I did not realize 1Z PP was up there with DACP in abrasiveness though. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I thought it was too weak of a product and maybe it was me? Will fill in with the SSR 2.5 results when it comes in.

So is the consensus here that 1Z PP is fine for even new(er) cars? I was under the impression that 1Z MP was the best choice for relatively new paint.

The 1z PP is more or less my standard on paint defects on my black Audi, especially for anything visible even without the 1000watt halogens. I always start least aggressive using a white LC polishing pad and PC cranked up to 6, often it will take a rather *long* time to polish out and on a few occasions I did have to up to a yellow cutting pad. On the occasions that I spent a real long time polishing out a single defect or two, I followed with MP and even Menzerna FP both with white pads.

It's not so much new/old paint, but rather mildly/badly marred paint or soft/hard paint that determines which polish you should use.

It really depends on your situation. Some paint is so hard that you need at least PP to remove any real marring. The MP is so mild that on these types of paint it's just a final, burnishing polish.

But on softer paint, the MP will be enough to remove marring all by itself.

Then you have people like fireberd305 who find the PP isn't nearly aggressive enough.

With the three "regular" 1Z polishes (Ultra/Extra, PP, and MP) you should be well equipped to handle most problems. Then you can use whatever you need.

I'm wondering if in addition to Meg's #83, #84 and PB SSR2.5, Menzerna Power Gloss would be of use to fireberd305 :nixweiss. Then of course, he would need some less aggressive polishes to bring back the shineand eliminate any polish induced marring

Well, the SSR 2.5 shold be a good bit stronger than the PP, see how that works. Most people are getting good results with it.

Generally, the color of paint doesn't factor in as far as whether a polish is aggressive enough. Most people are working with basecoat/clear, so they're just working clearcoat anyhow (the color under it doesn't really matter). On single-stage, black is about the softest paint there is, so PP oughta be OK for black SS.

I guess people just *notice* problems more with black since they stand out more than on colors like silver. But if anything, the only difference will be that you'll need to follow-up with a *milder* product than PP on some dark finishes since there might be visible micromarring.

Often the problem is just "trying to do rotary work with a PC". Removing serious marring from hard paint isn't really a PC-type job. In some cases you can just work longer (sometimes literally *hours* per panel), but in others you have to use more aggressive products and a Cyclo or a rotary.
