Which one, the PC7336 at Lowes or 7424 at CMA?

I own two cheap buffers I bought from Sears and they just turn in circles. I've never owned a rotary and you guys speak very highly of them. Are they that much better than a basic cheapo buffer? I checked out the PC7336 at Lowes and it is kinda heavy and the special velcro pads can get expensive but is it worth it? Do you put the wax on and buff off with the PC? The Porter Cable 7424 is 130.00 at CMA or the 7336 at Lowes for 109.00?

Thanks Mmmph but that's $119.00 plus tax and shipping? Isn't the $109.00 dal at Lowes good enough? I can just drive to CMA in Tampa and pick up the pads.
 
Tax? There's no tax outside of CT at coastaltool.

I just bought 6 7.5" VC foam pads from TOL for $45. Shipped, they were $52.65.



The same pads from CMA would have been $65.70, plus shipping...or in your case, $65.70 plus tax, time and gasoline.

Shipped to your door from TOL and coastaltool: $179.15



PC 7336, 1 counterweight, no velcro backing plate and 6 CMA pads:

Drive to Lowes and CMA @8% tax $188.68.

Don't forget to add your gas, your time and a velcro backing plate...$16.95 (Not a Porter-Cable) plus tax at CMA.
 
Just a point of clarification, the PC 7336 and 7424 are NOT rotary buffers. They are dual action random orbital units.
 
I called the two local Lowes near me asking if they had the 7334. One doesnt carry the 7334 and the other has the 7335. I will have to order it from coastal.

The correct part number for Lowes is the PC 7336, not 7334. :up
 
Silly question. The TOL VC pads have a hole in the center. Why? What is it used for and would make a difference? Thanks.
 
Yes, you want the 7336 because it comes with the 6" counterweight. The PC "jiggles" in an orbital motion a lot like your cheap Sears units actually. The difference is that the PC is a lot more powerful and potentially faster or slower since you can adjust the speed. :up

The hole in the middle is to center the pad on the backing plate. I have a hole in the middle of my backing plate for my Makita since it is 7 inches and centering pads can be a little difficult, so there is a hole in the center of my Makita backing plate and along comes a centering tool with the Makita that fits in the whole and you place the pads hole into the sleeve and then you remove the plastic sleeve and you got a centered pad. A very nifty idea, I just did realize it at first until I actually talked to some people about pads.



It shouldn't be a problem. My PC backing plate doesn't have this hole and I ordered 3 of those pads in 7 inch form with the hole in the middle. A review of this to come soon, or once this rain gets out of here.
 
OK. BradB showed me the light yesterday, and I'm ready to buy a PC. I've read a gazillion threads here (starting with 4DSC's), and am settled on the PC 7336. But as far as I can tell, our good friends at CMA and TOL only carry the 7424. Am I missing something?
 
I went through this a while ago. I wanted the 7424, but it came with the 5" counter weight. Since you need the 6" counterweight anyway, why not go with the 7336?



It was just easier to get the PC the same day and look at it in person. The deal on Coastal tool is great, but when you factor in the shipping and handling, you can actually save money buying it at Lowes and then buying the pad kit from CMA.

Yeah, that's how it looks to me too. I'm pretty surprised that the websites most loved by Autopians don't seem to carry the highly-recommended 7336.

In my opinion Mmmph said all that needs to be said. But let me explain in more detail ; If you go to Lowe's you get the PC w/ the 6" counterweight.....that's good. But then you need to buy the velcro backing plate for an additional 16 bucks. Therefore, 109 + 16 = 125. Vrs 119 from Coastaltool PLUS you get the 5" counterweigh which might be good under certain circumstances.
 
The coastaltool deal is righteous. It makes perfect sense, but folks just don't seem to understand. The 5" counterweight is good for the 4" spot finishing kit, or glass polishing kits.



And the CMA kits...Feh. You get terry bonnets (never used) or MF bonnets (Never used). Their backing plates are cheap and they want $10.95 for 7.5" VC foam pads...the sam ones TOL sells for $7.50 ($6 for 45).
 
FWIW, both CMA and Meguiar's don't see the need for the 6" counterweight. I've seen a Meguiar's branded PC in person and discovered it's actually a 7335. CMA does actually sell the 6" counterweight due to customer demand now, but they aren't happy about it! :p http://www.properautocare.com/pocacowe.html



I personally suggest the models (or deals like the Coastal kit) that come with the 6" weight because I have found it slightly easier to work with at higher speeds. I have a link to a vibration test thread I made in my PC thread. That is not to say you absolutely must have the 6" weight. Lots of people do without it, and other people can't tell the difference. In the Archives though, the majority of people suggest and prefer the 6" weight, as do I, so that's why I suggest that in my thread.

This is exactly the thought process I went through when I bought my outfit. For the enthusiast I felt that rather than spending 60 bucks on the CMA kit containing microfiber and terry bonnets which I saw described recently as best used as shower caps I decided to buy the advanced and finger pads. The Orange Power pad is muti-functional...and I love the white finger pad. Personally , I also questioned the value of the wax applicator pads in the kitl. Since I tape along edges and trim and since applying sealers is so easy I preffer avoiding any risk of micro marring a surface you just spent a lot of time prepping trying to appomplish what applying wax with a PC? On the other hand, if I were waxing 32' RV's I might see this differently :shocked but I'm not:p

You can use the PC and the pad that came with it the day you buy it.
