Which Microfiber towel for detail spray? I'm confused.

Slick71ss- Yeah, that's a nice one :xyxthumbs Great plate, too.

The problem with painters is that most of them, even when they can *paint* very well, just can't *buff*/polish/etc. very well...it's weird but true in just *so* many cases (and I use *good* painters ;) ). In many cases you really would be better off learning to do it yourself.

A careful going-over with something mild like Meg's #80 followed by a paste wax would be a great starting point and you wouldn't risk doing any real damage while you're learning. As long as you err on the side of caution (as opposed to getting aggressive in hopes of attaining perfection) you'd do fine.

Oh, and if you think you see marring under fluorescents...just wait until you see it under some *serious* lighting! I've found that fluorescents (I have literally dozens of them in my shop) just don't show flaws like high-wattage incandescents, for instance. But anyhow..

I sorta figured that the trapped water issue was what gave you pause when it comes to washing. I have to watch that on my Jag...lots of places where water can be trapped, and that car will rust if somebody cries near it ;) Two things that've helped me out are a dehumidifier in the garage and an air compressor to blow water out of nooks and crannies after each wash. You have to exercise a *little* common sense with regard to high-pressure air getting directed at things, but it still works great for me.

Man that car takes me back...I'm trying to spot the differences between yours and the '70 my buddy had...different headlights perhaps?

Well, me being Mr cheapo, I bought 12 of the Microfibertech Elite Microfiber Towels. I think this was a mistake! They don't seem thick and soft enough to me. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a MF towel though?

Well, since I'm the guy who recommended these, in my experience the only towel with a deeper nap than these would be the Monster Fluffy. As Accumulator mentioned, deep nap isn't everything because the crap will tend to stay at the surface.

Thanks for the tips. I still would prefer to have someone else detail the car. Maybe I could watch them to pick up some of the technique used. I also don't have a PC machine or orbital buffer.

No worries. I'm sure these will do fine. I think I was just expecting more than what a microfiber can offer.

Yes, the 70 has 2 headlights on each side and a slightly different grill. Also, the 71 rear bumper has 2 round tail lights on each side where as the 70 has one square tail light on each side. Other than that, the cars are about the same.

This thread has me somewhat scared to QD my black Acura now. I know that Honda/Acura paint is soft anyway, so I don't want to marr the paint. Those who say not to QD a soft black paint, how do you keep the car clean? I wash mine in the morning and park it in the garage......by that evening you can see a layer of dust on the car. Do I need to just wash the car every 2 days instead of dusting/QD every night?

yep when you have a black car you simply have to accept that it will get dirty and resist the urge to wipe it. You have to learn to not touch the car in between washes. By the way try washing with Optimum No-Rinse its more of a delicate wash when a full on wash is not needed. After using No-Rinse I would also recommend using Fk1 anti static express detail sprays like 146 and 425. I wish I had these when I had my black car. It won't keep your car 'just washed clean" but it will definitely cut down the cleaning. I wouldn't leave any product on my paint bare without first topping with 425 or 146. A very teflon like finish. I would avoid quick detailing the car between washes on less you want to show off the car for a special ocassion or something. And my advice: never touch black paint (or any paint really) when its dry. This means no dry dusting ever. Wet each panel fully with a quick detail spray and dampen your towel as well. Maximum lubrication is key.

Also avoid using just out of the dryer towels that have static charges on them, that will transfer to the paint and attract dust.

Slick71ss- Thanks for pointing out the differences between the Chevelle's model years. Gee, funny what I've forgotten over the last 20 years or so :o

On the MFs, IMO the better towels are money well spent. I have some OK-quality ones (not cheapies by any means, just to top-end) that scratch my Jag but not some othe cars. It pays to get really good ones for the jobs that matter ;)

To be perfectly honest, that's one reason I quit driving black cars- I can't stand to see them dirty looking and life's too short to wash them all the time. I'd rather *not* risk doing damage...let's face it, in the real world cars don't stay just-detailed perfect, they get dusty, etc. I think it's goofy that such stuff bothered me, but it did so I had to weigh my priorities. For me, owning a black car meant (very careful) washing a few times a week, it was the only way I could keep it nice looking without marring the paint. But hey, that's just me...see if whatever you're doing (from QDing to washing) is marring your paint and if so, find a way to stop doing the damage. What's worse- swirls or dust/scratches or dirt?

Well thanks for the info. I detailed my car about a month ago and got rid of all the swirls. I've been Washing once a week (after a rain) and dusting/Quick Detailing every night through the week. I was disquisted this past Friday night when I was getting gas and could see swirls all over the paint again under the bright gas station lights. I ended up having to polish the entire car again this past weekend. I wasn't sure if the swirls came from bad washing (2 bucket method) or from the QD's. I guess now I now and will just have to live with the dust for a few days (argh).........I hate owning a black DD.

Edit: I haven't touched the paint since applying my LSP, so lucky I saw this thread just in time.....I would have been QDing tonight.
