Which is more durable, Black Wow or Ultima Tire & Trim

Wow, it seems like the Black Wow really isn't as good as it's hyped to be. That sucks.



I'd like to see how spoliedman's results with Ultima try out on bringing back the black. If it's very thin, I have a feeling that it will not be any better.
 
Sounds to me like there is an application problem here. Black Wow when applied correctly shouldn't be oily. Once you apply it, it needs to be wiped dry with another clean towel. The correct application of BW is that it will be matte finish. This is shown on the video at the BW website which I cannot link because it has my URL on it. Try googling it.



Anyone that didn't have good results with BW should contact the manufacturer (me) to find out where things went wrong. Most of the time when I find people aren't happy with BW it's because their expectations are unrealistic. Where other products would have lasted one day, BW lasted many times longer.



BW wasn't designed for rubber, though people do like putting it on. It also doesn't run, so it sounds like an application issue.



BW also isn't a dye--yes shoe polish will keep trim looking longer but it also transfers color when you rub against it. For the products mentioned in this thread, both are silicone based and don't use dyes to improve the looks.



To Matt and Nickelplated--send me a PM. Tell me where you got your bottle--I'll refund your money but give me more information on what you did to apply the BW.

I really see no way it would NOT be removed from the area under my doors on this car after a rain or 2. think of it like a steady stream of water running over the same spot.



wiping it with an additional cloth after application I would believe would make the product no more effective than wiping it on and not removing it. although it would more than likely fix the running down the paint after application.
 
Tell me more about what is under your door? Oops sorry--just saw it was a 97 Civic. Still I'm not familiar with this model--is this some body moulding under the door like a skirt? Still surprised by your results--haven't seen this problem or heard of it from users.



The BW around the windows makes me curious--was this rubber?



The reason I said to wipe it off after application is that because BW works by absorbing into the trim material. Any BW on the surface is just wasted product so wiping it off would only remove it from the top surface. Because it wasn't designed for application on rubber--it doesn't absorb like it does on plastic and tends to sit on top. This is why I say that BW isn't a tire dressing.



How did you prep the area before applying the BW?



You said that BW didn't last more than a rain or two. How many days was this? And did you try reapplying the BW after the rain? In most cases people find that additional applications require even less product.

I applied mine as suggested. I think my expectations were too high after i saw a bunch of people ranting and raving about the stuff. Plus i thought it was more of a dye for some reason. No need for a refund, the stuff is definitely better than a lot of the other trim dressings i have tried. Great choice of scent by the way!
 
Posted this in another trim thread. This trim is on a neglected Volvo XC90. I'm sure you can tell what was cleaned and what's not. The *most* important part of restoring trim is to make sure that it's clean first. This was cleaned with GR40 (Top of the Line) and dressed with Ultima.

I'll take a shot of the trim on my rocker panels. Car is ten years old and Ultima has been on there for about 6 weeks now. It looks just applied.
 
RIchard, yes under the door is like a rocker panel side skirt black plastic textured piece. when it rains water collects in the door seams and ends up running down a few spots removing anything in its way. maybe a few more applications rubbing in and wiping off excess will make it last?



around the windows, the trim was so darn weathered I am not certain what it was. I can not remember. we have had the car for many years and just do not remember what it was like originally. believe me it looks much better than it did, the streaking was a one time set back after I removed the streaking the trim still looks good.



it is not a bad product, it is a nice one step to clean and make the stuff look way better, but just be careful if used close to painted panels it may run on the paint and it is hard to get off. also if in a spot where it will have constant wetness it may not last as long.
 
What I'm saying is that it shouldn't run when applied properly. Yes getting it off is hard and its supposed to be that way--that's why it lasts. But once applied to the trim, what's needed to restore the trim will soak in and not run out. Anything on the surface will definitely wash off--and it's why I tell people they can apply BW and then wash the car immediately to remove any excess if they don't want to use a towel to wipe it off.

Since you have tried both Black Wow and Ultima, which do you like better personally?



Was the trim pictured coated once or multiple times with the Ultima?

I like them both but for different uses. The BW for trim that is just done and Ultima for trim that responds well to cleaning. If I had to pick one it would be Ultima as it wins the ease of use with ease.



That is a single coat of Ultima on that trim.
