which glaze: VM or #7

Those of you who like #7 except for the application hassles oughta try #3 (somewhat easier) or #5 (*much* easier).

My Meguiars distributor recommended using #3 over #7 when I first started detailing. I agree, it is a much easier product to use. #81 Hand Polish is also easier to work with.

I have just tried #7 last night, and followed the instructions of Mr. Mike Philips at the hall of fame. It's not actually a PITA to work, but at any rate, the finish is not new to me. Just look like a 3M SCLW. Yes, I know it's a different category, but my point is that why should I apply #7 if I'm only after the oil-based look, whereas I can already achieved that using 3M SCLW. My very reason of using #7 is to eliminate minor swirls, but it's hell. Not even mom's phase 2, or 3M IHG does it. Thus, I tried the #83 DACP using the right pad (that's the only way to apply it I guess, by machine). And hell, that's IT!

So bottomline is, between VM and #7, it all depends on what you're after, the glaze, the oil-based looks, the swirls. But honestly I have to agree with the majority. It's still VM.

Unless dealing with old-school ss paint (especially lacquer) I dunno if there's any real reason to use #7 except a) if you just like it, and b) on fresh paint. There are reasons to use it on the (older tech) ss, but that's not relevant to most people. The "fresh paint safe" feature is, IMO, the big reason to keep #7 around (though *I* like IHG or #5 better for this anyhow).

"Pure polishes" (as Meg's calls them) like #7 are nonabrasive, so they don't even remove minor marring, just cover it up. Nothing's great at this, but yeah, there are products that work better than #7.

Too bad #7 is the only product like this that Meg's distributes so widely (you can get it anywhere).
