Which combo for removing Hazing/Micromarring

Well, I finally got my package from excel a few weeks back and have finally had a good weekend to detail the car. My car is a black Nissan 350z. I posted pics on here a few months back of the car and the condition of the paint.

After wash and clay bar, I started to polish with the SSR 2.5 and orange propel pad. This worked pretty well, and got 70-80% of the swirls scratches out, but there are still a bit more that still show. It also left a nasty haze and lots of micromarring. I didnt have enough time to do any more but do a coat of RMG then EXP. So this week I tried to get out the hazing with using SSR 2 with a green pad (after wash/clay of course). Hazing slightly decreased, but not much...still micromarring. Then I tried SSR 2 with a blue pad...same results. So, I gave up and just sealed it since I dont have SSR 1.

Now what should I do to remove the remainder of the hazing/micromarring? Should I start all over and do SSR 2.5, SSR 2, and then buy a bottle of SSR 1 and finish it up with that?

What is a good product/pad combo that will work on hazing/micromars on a black car. It doesnt neccessarily have to be SSR 1. If there is something better out there, I dont mind using it as long as it isnt too expensive and easy to use.

This is my first time using the PC, so I hope I havent done anything detrimental to the finish. I used everything at speed 3 to spread around then increased to speed 4.5-5 on the PC to work it in, usually doing about 4 passes. (1 horiz, 1 vert, 1 horiz, 1 vert) Should I do less, more? I also used approx, a ring of polish on the pad for each section (3x3)...a fender, a half of hood, etc...) Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong as far as technique. I have been reading a bit more on the forums and other sites and it seems like a lot of the hazing is a normal thing caused by heavier polishes. But I have also read it can be caused by going to fast, not working the polish in, bending the backing plate, pressing down to hard, etc.. Please let me know if I am correct here. I am trying to practice with the PC when using just wax. Im trying to figure out if its my technique that is causing this or if I dont have the right polish/cleaner for the job as I have heard mixed reviews about SSR 2 actually removing hazing/micromarring.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jon

Is using speed 6 neccessary for working polishes? When I use speed 6 I feel like vibrates really strong, and almost hard to keep steady without applying a little force. So I just use it around 5. Is this not enough speed for these polishes?

Also, how long are you working your polish in for?

Also, where does the small grey washer go that comes with PC?

I use Final Polish II with a finishing pad, speed 6, moderate pressure - got rid of everything for me.

^^^^^Same for me as well, FPII is probably my favorite polish now!!! Ive almost finished my enitre truck, just a few more hrs to do the tailgate and then wax the whole thing an im finally done!!!!

FPII on 6 with moderate pressure for the first pass then i go light for the 2nd pass and usually everything is nice an clear ;).

I think 6 is needed for the polish to break down. Many people use a polishing pad with FPII but I feel the finishing pad clears things up much better. Got rid of all the micromarring for me. I suggest you take off the handle of the porter cable and learn to hold it down at the head of the pc to apply pressure...Works a lot better in my opinion. Work the polish in until it clears, make slow passes about 1/2 inch to an inch per second with overlapping passes. Shoul work great!

Yeah, take the handle off and hold the PC's housing instead. It's OK to apply a bit of force.

I've never found a use for the gray spacer and I suspect it's for use with the dust-collection system (remember that it's a sander ;) ).

Ok. Thanks guys...

So, it seems like most people are suggesting Menzerna Final Polish II with a light polish pad (green pad maybe??) or a finishing pad (Blue pad maybe??)

Will FPII work better than SSR1 for hazing/micromarr? Also, can I just use FP II only and it will clear everything up again, or should I start over with 2.5? Or go over it again with SSR 2 then follow with FPII. From what I am understanding the SSR 2.5 is what is causing the hazing b/c of its abbrasiveness correct? Maybe Im not using enough polish? I going to keep everything into consideration of course and just practice until I get it right. How long will one bottle of SSR polish last if I polish the whole car? Thanks for everyones help! I cant wait to get the hang of everything and have my black Z look like wet glass again :)

Let me know what polish-cleaner/pad combo would work best on this. It seems like the SSR 1 and FP II are the most popular with the green and blue pads. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am curious about this as well.....should he start over or just move on to FPII?

Thanks KGB, I will take that into consideration before I start next detail weekend. So, is speed 6 really neccessary on the SSR 2.5 and SSR 2? Like I said before, It seems I will have to add alot of pressure to keep it stable against the finish. Also, abou how long do you work in a polish in a 2x2 area? (1-2 minutes?)

Also, I am still up in the air about what to use as far as products. Should I go for the SSR 1 or FP II? Does one have different characteristics as far as cleaning, polishing, or useage?

Again, do I need to start over in order, or can I just use the SSR 1 or FPII and be fine until its time to polish(remove swirls/defects) again?

Can't really answer as well as I'd like...I've never used the SSR stuff and I use almost all my polishes on 6 unless that makes them flash too fast (doesn't on the FP). Maybe FP'll take out the marring, maybe it won't. Just depends on the paint's hardness and the severity of the marring.

Utterly wild guess- if it were *mine* I'd use something more aggressive than the FP and I'd use a mild polishing pad.

Whats more aggressive than FP but not as harsh as SSR 2? I tried SSR2 once with a green, and then once with a blue, and it took a little hazing out, but could stil see it in the sunlight.
