which 1st: claying or cleaner?

Which step do you people do first? Clay, or use a cleaner to get rid of scratches? If you clay first, do you wash the vehicle afterwards or do you go on to the next step?

I clay using Meg's #34 Final Inspection as a lube ... so clean-up is easy with out a second wash.
I polish second ... Some of the junk that the clay pulls out (for lack of a better term) will end up on your pad otherwise. Just my thoughts ... I am sure there are others!

My preference is to wash first, then clay with a fresh bucket of wash soap for lube. I re-wash each panel as I finish claying. Rinse then dry. Afterwards, I would pull out the appropriate paint cleaners, swirl removers, or polishes.

Wash, then clay with a quality lubricant (Adam's Detail Spray). I leave the residue on there, and do my initial polish right over it.

It comes out great, and save time from rewashing.

My routine exactly! :bigups

I basically do the same thing Nick has described.

Do a preliminary wash, then thoroughly dry the vehicle, then clay it.

Some people rinse/wash it again after it has been clayed, but unless there is a justified reason to do so (like obvious spots/blemishes from the lube) i dont think its necessary.

Goodluck.:)

I'm with NICK and BOSS I use a good QD spray after the wash and dry. Then straight to the SWR or polish.

I've always wondered about those that use soapy water then have to re-wash again.

I mean that it takes me 5 to 6 hours for a full detail and that seems like just more time.

It's winter, no water available, so after I clay I use Spray and Wipe, then Pro Polish, then EX, and will be changing to Ex-P with the next full detail.
