rjstaaf, how's d dfconcours towel compare to pakshak?I'm very tempted to get this DF Concours Towel 29 x 16 from

PAC as well as df mfwashmitt since they are having 15% off.

I would say the Autopia Concours Buffing Towel is comparable to the Pakshak Ultra-fine Towel (yellow ones). You can't go wrong with either one. :xyxthumbs

I am not a big fan of microfiber wash mitts. They may be soft but, I like the longest fiber possible to trap dirt and pull it away from the paint and I find that real sheepskin wool mitts have worked best for me.

For folks who buy into this argument, let me just say: OK, buy one of the towels you can get at WalMart, AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc. Then order a set of MFs from the folks we love here (PakShak, Autopia, DFTowel, MicrofiberTech, Poorboys, etc.). And just feel the difference, try the two on your paint. For me, once I tried the True, Professional MFs, there was never a temptation to go back to the schlock that I can buy locally. ... But that's just me.

I guess that is just you because I have tried both and NEITHER scratch. Why pay $5.00+ for a single microfiber towel online when I can go down to Autozone get a 3 PACK for $5.00? I wash the towels and I am good to go. It is interesting that we are all here to try and save money but when someones makes a post about a product that goes against the status quo he is flamed.

Oh well enjoy spending your money and please, please don't believe the hype. I have used those Autozone towels for a few months and NO, I mean NO scratches whatsoever and my wallet is alot fatter too. :p

ANTONIO,why pay $5.00 for a single MF towel online,Its because once you see feel the towel and use it its called piece of mind? The vendors that sell these towels have them checked out time and time again. They make sure that they are PERFECT to sell to the NUTS that love there cars. The thread count is higher then the normal MF towel that is in the average store.I have over 140 MF towels and believe me I know the difference. The only really nice MF towels that I found in a store was BED BATH AND BEYOUND.They had a nice product. Some of these vendors even make sure that there are no tags because tags can scratch the paint always thinking of the customer

Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe is a fine 16x16 towel, with NO label, and edgeless. Right, edgless!

It is white, really shows the stuff it picks up.

If not already, it should be soon available at mass merchandisers. $5.99 maybe a little pricey (20-pack for $70), but for the casual user who only needs a few... at least they are available locally.

Me? I have over 200 (blue) from JTInternational, at $2.14 each, including shipping. Just wonderful.

I totally agree. Only till recently I had been using only the Turtle Wax mf towels from my local Auto Zone since I bought my car in August. I have little to NO scratches on my paint finish. Those very few that are present are because of my old bathroom towel I've been using to dry the car which will now be replaced by the PakShak ww.

Now I have purchased 9 new Viking mf towels for $12 to add to the collection. The convenience of running down the street to my local Auto Zone to buy mf towels over buying more expensive ones on the internet is a no brainer. :nixweiss

Hey, Antonio. Nobody has been flamed in this thread. Don't over-react. We're just comparing our experiences with MFs.

To Antonio Wright and evo77: Since you two are urging folks to use the locally-available (Walmart etc.) MFs: Have either of you purchased and used the high-quality MFs from PakShak, MF Tech, etc.? When I was new to detailing, I bought the Walmart etc. brands and thought they were just the bees' knees. But as soon as I took the plunge to buy the high-quality MFs, I immediately could see and feel the difference. Yeah, maybe Walmart & co. MFs are "good enough." But "good enough" just isn't good enough for my detailing work. All the MFs I have been able to buy locally are stiff and feel harsh; my Autopian MFs (from various sources noted here) are gentle and soft. Like ALAN81 said, part of this deal is just "peace of mind."

Hi

What do you think about MF towels sold at rightlook.com??

I purchased some 4 months ago and pretty happy with them but I have only tested those and Sonax ones.

I am about to do a big purchase for my business and would like to do the right decision

Don't over-react

My first experience with MF for detailing was the Neat-Items minty green towel followed closely by the CMA Miracle towel. I was way down the path of MF usage (auto and home usage)before the NicSand towels were widely available (I still use these on the mirrors in the house). Now, we Autopians are lucky enought to have numerous sources of good quality MF products. I have sampled many (current MF count @ 120) but not all, and there is not a loser in the bunch.

No one is a larger proponent of the MF products offered by our Autopia based vendors. But, there is something to be said for the ability to run over to your local AutoZone, T@rget, W@lM@rt etc. for a quick MF fix. The towels I have used - 3M/Concordia/MicroTex/Mystic Maid/NicSand/Scotch/Spontex - are fine products which have not produced any scratching or micro-marring on my finishes.

Lynn, if your experience with locally available MF products is that they are "stiff and harsh", then that is the complete opposite of my experience. I have 1 (out of 5)NicSand (blue) towel that seems a bit stiffer than the others. I have worn out 1 Concordia towel (out of 10). I have 12 of the Microtex towels and no problems thus far. The PowerRag by Scotch is a very robust towel, and I have had no problem using it for QD duties.

As far a "good enough", a tool is often only as good as the operator. I can produce micro-marring on a CD with even my "better" towels. I also have no problem not producing micro-marring with even my "cheapest" towels.

No, not urging just sharing my experience just like everyone else.:xyxthumbs

And what exactly is "good enough"? For me its knowing that my mf towel is not scratching the paint. And its not but thats because its a combination of a technique and the towel itself. ;)

I'm somewhere in the middle in all of this. I have many of the Wal-Mart and Turtle Wax towels. And I have a few (not enough, though) of Exceldetails excellent towels (I'll be ordering more hopefully soon). I also have a few of the Meg's towels. I can definitely tell the difference between them not only in feel but overall performance. I can detail my car properly with any of them without marring, but I really have to watch pressure when using the WalMart ones, and to a lessor extent the TW ones, to prevent marring (I can not use either on my soft clear plastic pieces as they both scratch just from coming in contact with it). Exceldetail's towels are physically much more plush, and I have never had any marring with any amount of pressure I would normally use. The Meg's towels are a step above the TW, but below the Exceldetail (keep in mind these are the old Meg's towels with the black edge, not the new ones I haven't tried). Neither the Meg's nor the Exceldetail scratch my clear plastic.

Another noticeable difference is with linting. The WalMart ones "shed" tiny pieces of lint ALL over. I can not use them for glass ever because of this. The TW are much better in this respect, Meg's haven't linted at all, but Exceldetail's are the best I have for EVERY aspect of detailing with absolutely no complaints.

My WalMart and TW towels are for everything but glass, paint, and plastics (which pretty much only leaves cleaning "hidden" areas and wiping door jamps, engines, rims, etc...).

I enjoy the piece of mind knowing that while using Exceldetail's or Meg's towels, I will not scratch my paint or delicate plastic at all. I also will not have to worry about lint. This piece of mind is important to *me*, as detailing my car is my "moment of zen".

I will be ordering more quality towels when I can justify to my wife why I need even more towels for polishing my car that are better quality than we bathe ourselves with. But she is gradually coming around, and I may be able to order some more later this decade.

As for the Meg's towels, I don't hesitate to use them. But they are more expensive than what I classify as even better towels ordered elsewhere. But the plus side to the Meg's towels is I can get them locally if in a bind. It just comes down to timing versus expense in that aspect.

As for towels from other respected distributors on this site, I have not had the opportunity to use their products yet. I have no doubt that they have top quality towels, and at respectable prices, too. Several of them are members on this board whom I respect their input on towels greatly. I don't think anyone could go wrong with getting their products, quality or price wise. Unfortunately, I'll have to come up with a good scam for the wife so I can get several from each. Any ideas on how to get over on the wife on this?

These are just my personal observations; others may differ.

I noticed from the pictures that the Pakshak, MicrofiberTech, etc. (and many others), have these 'stitched' edges. Do these 'scratch' the paint surface ? I noticed Meguiar's newest is an 'edgeless' MF towel. Seems like it may not last as long because the edges may fall apart sooner, but looks like it's less likely to scratch than the others. Opinions/thoughts out there ?

Thanks,

Andy

I have stitched edged PakShak and MicroFiberTech ( Autofiber) that are almost 2 years old and others that are at least 6-9 m.o from vendors like Exceldetail and AutoGeek and some recently received MF from WCD ( excellent buy and quality 10 MF 16x16 from $19 :xyxthumbs). Absolutely no stitching problems of frayed borders.

I recently got some edgeless MF's and WW from Exceldetail that are of excellent quality and great color (orange). My first experience with edgeless towels was with DF Towel all natural MF ( ~18 m.o.) which are just plain outstanding and extremely durable (hobbyist usage).

Stitched edge verses edgeless MF/WW? I feel perfectly comfortable with both from high quality sources.

Keep in mind as MF towels become more and more popular the locally available quailty will also improve. At some point in the near future locally available MF's should meet the required high standards of most Autopian. With that said and the minor price difference, I love the ease of internet ordering and will continue my loyality to the vendors that originally provided and continue to do so these fine detailing products.

Are the SMP micro's the same as Poorboy's? If not are they any good?

I don't know if they are the same but I buy from Scott P. (SMP)

and find the towels to be excellent quality and very soft. :xyxthumbs

And if you tell him "The Beer Man" sent ya he might hook you

up with some stuff, either that or he's going to punch my lights

out.:shocked

All-in-all great products and service.:D

The Beer Man:D  :scared

what's the best way to 'wash' microfiber towels and what's the best way to dry them ?

I remember seeing some kind of 'cleaning' liquid or something that was sold specifically to wash microfiber towels.

Also.... how do you get things like 'polish', etc. that might have some petroleum distillate in them, out of the microfibers.

Thanks,

Andy

Over the past year I have bought MF towels from all the major on line supliers mentioned in this discussion. And although I will readily admit that towels such as the Viper which go for $12 a copy are ultra plush the MF's being offered at Costco for 8 or 9 bucks a dozzen are equal to almost all the others in ever respect.

Nine bucks a dozzen works out to $ 0.75 a towel !!!

IMO, save your cash. Purchase a liquid clothes detergent without bleach, fragrance, softener, etc. and a gallon of distilled white vinegar.

The vinegar get placed in during the rinse cycle. The mixture does the same as any "shampoo" for towels and is more cost effective. The money saved will allow you to spend more money on more car care products.

Are you saying that the Pakshak, MicrofiberTech, are the same quality as the costco brands ? (The Viper seems to be

the only one you call out as above the rest in quality.

Did I understand you correctly ?
