Where Do You Shop (spread the $$)?

Why is it that the polyester backing/stitching on cheaper towels causes scratching on our clearcoats/paint, yet all the polyester in microfiber towels does not? Anyone know the difference in the type of polyester used??

I would think that it's because of the split fiber of the MF towels. They are not looped like they are in terry towels. As a matter of fact, the terry MF towels are not recommended for use on paint because they will strip wax and possibly even polymer-based sealant.

The split fiber is very fine and doesn't scratch paint. The ultra-suede is even finer (more threads per inch) and are so scratch-resistant that you can use them on expensive optical lenses.

But, I have wondered why nobody mentions what happens when the serged edge of the MF towel comes in contact with paint. I don't know, but really don't know how to avoid it. Seems to not scratch but I'm not positive.

Where do you shop for your supplies - detailing supplies, cleaners, lights, tools, etc.? My detailing and equipment purchases (no particular order) have been at:

> PAC
> Ace Hardware
> AG
> Lowes
> Dollar Tree
> Sam's Club
> Walmart
> Target
> Harbor Freight
> Sears
> Auto Zone
> Advance Auto Parts
> O'Reily's / Checker Auto
> CarQuest
> Pep Boys

What influences your purchasing? For me (no particular order) it's:

> Product
> Total Price (price, tax, shipping)
> Availability
> Immediate need (Time / distance)
> Vendor Loyalty (both to and from vendor)

I shop any place that I feel the company, (owner?) honestly cares or appreciates that I am spending my hard earned dollars with them. I refuse to support product lines or companies I believe are just "moving boxes". People work too hard for their money not to be picky who they give it to. Price is not always the determining factor. I look at the overall value...service, price, quality, shopping experience etc... I tend to be very loyal to them after I determine they are worth the effort.

"Vendor loyalty" is also important to me. I "vote" with my dollars and have strong convictions. Without naming names, there are a number of companies I will never again give my money or time - "never" as in one of my convictions is 25 years old.

I'll pay a higher price (if still a fair price) with one vendor over another if I have developed that loyalty. In the long run the few percentages of dollars comes back to enrich my life in other ways.

GEWB,
You and I would get along just fine. I have one from my previous life in retail electronics. A certain Japanese TV manufacturer pulled some shenanigans on us. They sent shoppers in to bait one of our sales people, (that happened to be very inexperienced at the time) and got him to say something, while not terrible was not totally flattering to the mfg. About two weeks latter three Gray Suits show up and explain to us that what had happened and how if we wanted to continue getting a hot model of TV they had we WOULD carry more of their PJ TV's, (that were only average at the time) and more of their car stereo, (which was really average at the time) and educate our sales people on how to better explain their products. I decided then and there I would NEVER give them another dime. That was in the early nineties. I have stayed true to my word. You will not find a piece of their equipment in my home. I know my few dollars will not have any effect on their business, but I feel better. Like I said in another post, I work very hard for my dollars and I will determine who gets them.

Wow, similar life paths! I spent a couple years as a manufacturer's rep for consumer electronics and two years in computer retail.

As to "effect", I do beleive every individual makes a difference - taken together every grain of sand makes a beach.

I mainly purchase things from eShine and for bigger orders I go to Detailed Image as they are close to the border for me. I make it a trip and head over to Olive Garden since Canada doesn't have them anymore :(
