Where do you detail during the winter?

I'm trying to figure this one out myself...I could do small to mid-sized cars in my garage if I took my toolbench out, but then all my detailing supplies would have to go somewhere else...Our shop across town is already full of our "toys" and other junk, so that's out the window too. The guy that has the shop next to ours is a good friend, he's got plenty of extra space so hopefully I can score a small space in there to do details during the rainy days.

Any of you just use an E-Z up with tarps on the sides or something like that?

Detailing here in NO CA ends with the rains starting for the small guys like us...I take the winter off for the most part...I have found over the last five years that once it starts to rain the mind set of people up here is...wait until spring...Anywho if I do get a car I use the garage at my house...I keep it clean so that I can get both my cars in year round....Added note its on my "to do" list for this weekend to clean out again
 
I work in my gargage with a heater. For the most part, I only work on my rides during the winter. They are more than enough to keep up with.
 
My question is, what do you guys do for your product storage during the winter? Is it OK for the products to go through freezes and thaws, or should I take everything into the house?

Take it in the house/basement during the winter, unless your garage remains above freezing at ALL times.
 
I'd agree with storing the stuff in a place that will not frezze...We don't have that problem here in CA but it has to mess up the product in some way.

That's exactly what I do also. With 5 cars, that are constantly covered with winter slop, there's always one or two in need of attention....

(mine, my wife's, and my 3 boys cars!)

From WA State. In the winter I use my shop. I haven't found that freezing affects my products. In fact, I've never found a product frozen. I have a small heater as well.

Interior details and gift certificates are the focus of my business during
the Winter months. In October, we've detailed an average of over 1.5 cars
per business day.

True true, Dave, it does slow down during te winter. I just got word that we have to move from our current shop (Owner is selling the land for development, go figure...), so I have to either clean the garage up a little so I can fit a small car inside to detail, or hopefully the new shop will have enough room for me to have a detailing bay. We're thinking about building a shop on my grandpa's property, aaround 3,000+ SQ FT, more than enough to hold all three racers, dirtbikes, and at least 2 of the trailers. Hopefully we'll build it and I can make a small corner of it mine, LOL. It's a lot better than using an E up I bet :biggrin:

I just informed my wife that I was gonna bring in all my stuff and put on the mantle...she threatened me with bodily harm :helpsmili

Supposed to get ~30 tonight. Ugh.
 
My garage is not insulated, but I have a 100,000 BTU Kerosene torpedo construction heater that keeps me warm.
I run it for about 10 to 30 minutes and it warms the garage up 20 to 40 degrees. I then shut it off and go to work. If I feel it is getting too cold, I run it some more while I go in the house and have a cup of hot chocolate. It is too noisy and uses up too much oxygen to run while I am in the garage.

All my products go in the basement during the winter. Freezing does affect some products in a bad way. They sometimes separate and then will not mix back together properly. I think the term is "emulsify". Anyway, they don't do it and are trash. I keep a few Sterilite Tote Trays with different products in them. One that I use most often has window cleaner, S&W, Meg's APC+, 4 Star UGE, Klasse AIO, 4 Star UPP, Woolite & water, 4 Star Leather Conditioner, and 303. Pretty much takes care of anything short of swirl removal.
