Where do you buy your oil + filters?

BITOG is a good site but I take many things with a grain of salt. WAY to much sales people...Look at the ADD forum..joke.

Supertech is a good filter IF doing normal drains. If longer, there are way better filters. Some UOA;s will show this.

It's a good forum. Lots of sales, I agree, but also a lot of proven info. I know, and said earlier in the post that Synthetic isn't needed, but I am looking to go that route. Amsoil will allow comfortable 10k drains, and I like the thought of only two changes a year. I won't be pushing the oil at all!

Pennzoil Platinum is a GREAT oil, especially if you can get it on the BOGO sale at Advance Auto. I may use that in our Murano.

Bottom line is, use what you like. They are all "good." Different oils work better for different applications, and as I said before, synthetic is rarely necessary, but it will allow longer OCI's and better cold weather performance.

Synthetic "necessary", probably not but I think with todays driving habits it would be beneficial to a lot of people who frequently make very short trips that do not allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Synthetics better resist the resulting acid buildup and while a lot of people preach the 3000 oil change interval I seriously doubt the average soccer mom changes the oil that frequently. I would much rather be running a synthetic in those conditions than a conventional oil.

The benefit of synthetic oil is that you have a wider boo boo margin for the typical driver that doesn't treat their vehicles like we Autopians do. For someone who regularly changes their oil at the recommended intervals and drives their vehicle long enough for the engine to reach normal operating temps to burn off the crud on a regular basis than by all means a conventional oil is more than enough.

Do you plan on doing UOAs on Amsoil? While Amsoil may not have problems going out to 10K, I would worry about the oil filter lasting that long. I do believe Amsoil also offers filters for extended drain intervals as I doubt a conventional filter would last 10K.

True but again I take most with a grain of salt. It is like the Mobil 1 is now a group3 when only 1 person has stated this.

Also I have used Amsoil since 1993. I have done over 12K drains in diesel trucks and my Lexus. Even done longer drains on my GSXR and Kubota tractor. Their products are good and I was a dealer for many years. Problem is their products are over stated. I know, based on my years of doing UOA's, Amsoil ASL will NOT last 25K miles in my car. It will not even last 20K miles. It would be lucky to get 17K.

Oh, if you use there new Eoa filter you only do (1) change per year.

As always find what works best via UOA here.

Amsoil older SDF and ASF filter could go 10K no problems. Their new EAO from donaldson will last much longer.

I would not even blink going 7,500+ on a wix or Napa gold.

Confused here. Are they saying at BITOG now that Mobil 1 is a Group 3? What a bunch of whooey... I stopped going there some time ago because of crapola like that. It is like the MSDS threads we have here every now and then where people read things that aren't there into something they read online somewhere. It takes soo much time to filter out the crap from the threads there that it just isn't worth it.

Ditto the UOA, that is the best way to see what works best in your engine :2thumbs:

I regularly go 7500 on Motorcraft, Mobil 1 (old and new EP filters) or Purolator Pure One filters with no problems whatsoever based on my UOA. I have not pushed any of them much past that though.

I have 7549 miles on Mobil 1 EP oil and a Mobil 1 EP filter right now and will probably be changing the oil this weekend and sending it off for another UOA. The Mustang just passed 90K the other day.

Yes, about 2 to 3 months ago there was a few threads that Mobil 1 was not a full group 4. Only (1) person said it was and all hell broke out. That was 1 reason why I stopped looking there.

Mobil is good filters. I think they are behind Amsoil EAo & k&N. I have had great luck with Lc20 in oil too. It makes all wears drop 50 to 100% and TBN more stable. I would tell anyone to use it.

Use UOA and you are fine. UOA's are over all the "show-n-tell here too". I know that most car manufactures are behind the times with oil. I know that over 12K miles on my Lexus ES, Amsoil was doing fine but not great. Amsoil also does not tell you that there 25K miles was tested in a "lab" not real life. Not knocking the product since I did use it (and might go back). Again, a dealer for too long. I tried LC20 in Amsoil (ASL) and worked great; way better numbers. I am now trying ARX and SuperTech dino and see what happens. The first go around ARX did poorly; based on valve cover pixs. It is hard since every engine is different.

I have been using FP60 for years. I have LC20 but I haven't used it in some time. I may put some in the new oil this weekend and do another UOA next change and see how the TBN compares.

There were a few positive things I got from BITOG membership ;)

I know it made my Amsoil a real "25K mile" oil. I have also used Fp60, neutra 131 and Lucas UCL. Fp60 gained some MPG. 131 gained the most. And UCL made the engine the smoothest. So I bought a gallon of UCL and (4) gallons of Neutra 131.
